BPFit got to sit down with Ken Berger, Founder and Owner of Max Velocity Fitness + Performance in Bayside, Queens. Staring out his professional career as a NBA Sports Journalist, Ken found that after 20 years the unhealthy lifestyle just wasn't worth it. He decided to take a leap and open up Max Velocity. His main focus as a Sport Performance Coach is injury prevention and optimizing performance. Combining his background in nutrition, Ken announced on this episode that he will be launching a website called hoopsscience.io in October! The main goal is to spread knowledge to young athletes that sleep, recovery and nutrition all play a big part in optimizing performance and staying healthy like the professionals.

In today's episode we are discussing POWER! We were reading an article "Power Cubed" on strengthcoach.com posted by Mike Boyle, which went over three different ways to go about power work. Our main goal is risk vs reward, especially when dealing with general population. Power is essential for aging adults, we lose power quicker than strength. As our high school spring track and field season came to an end. We really noticed how we had to focus on recovery as we dwindled down the last few weeks into our state championship meet. Ending with an excellent season, placing 6th in both the 4x100m relay and open 200m. What did we focus the last two weeks on? RECOVERY. We have taught our athletes the importance of listening to their bodies and not running it into the ground knowing they need to peak at specific times.

Some modalities or trick of the trade include: epsom salt baths, ice baths, foam rollers of any kind, soft tissue massage, breathing technics, acupuncture, decrease training intensity, sleep, nutrition, hydration

According to U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, only 25% of kids are active for 60 minutes per day. We found this statistic to be outrageous, so of course we had to chat about it. Lack of motor skills have been noticeable in today's youth, such as hopping, skipping, jumping, running or the other side of the spectrum sport specificity. As for the parents out there, the cycle must be broken! We give you some ideas as to how to get your kids and yourself outside and playing. It starts with you guys, if not the cycle will continue and inactivity is the magic pill for inflammatory disease, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, the list goes on. Spring Track and Field is upon us! We are very excited to see our athletes grow from beginning of the season to the end when they need to peak and as individuals. We wanted to give you guys the reality of coaching high school athletics. You can have the most amazing program in the world but most of the time, especially in high school, shit happens and you have to think on your toes and roll with the punches. We have been receiving numerous requests to touch on strength training with general population and what our approach is? Our philosophy is simple, what are the clients needs versus their wants and how do we develop an individual comprehensive training program. We base this off of filling their training buckets, (listen to Brendon Rearick, a co-owner and educator with CFSC who breaks down this concept). This is such an important topic to touch on because we see so many things in the health and fitness industry that are meant to look cool and offer zero benefits to anyone. It is about a training program not a workout, don't just pick a bunch of cool exercises out of a bucket and call it training. You can't fit a square peg in a round hole. Hope you all enjoy!
