Now some of you may feel there is a lack of representation of mental health providers and that is understandable, however, the great thing is, with modern technology, mental health providers are easily accessible through the World Wide Web as there are many online virtual options. Brainwaves will speak with Licensed Mental Health Professional Ms. Sephflana Duncan who talk to us about her faith as a clinician, barriers and benefits for her clients.

We will also look through the lens of someone who has experienced complex traumas of racism with an understanding of why you may experience stigma in the mental health field. The goal of today’s podcast is to ensure experiences of racial trauma are acknowledged and validated, breaking down the walls of stigma and providing support to ultimately seek professional mental health care.  

Today’s episode will focus on an ecological systems approach by exploring the interconnectedness of various systems that influence attitudes toward the mental health field. Support from Church leaders and mental health professionals working collaboratively can positively impact and immensely improve mental health outcomes for congregations. Brainwaves of Faith has invited the Reverend Dr. Horace Hough of the First Baptist Church in Milford, Connecticut to share insight on his role as a church leader and the importance of addressing mental health care for his congregants.

We have a very diverse audience of listeners of many different cultures, ages, identities, genders, and religions. A lot of our listeners have experienced racial trauma in the form of verbal, and physical violence. These incidents can be experienced directly and indirectly and often result in being exposed to harmful stereotypes and labels that result in fear, stigma, and a failure to seek professional mental health care.
