  • 70. Breath Prayer

What is breath prayer, and why would you want to know?

Calming, connecting, and centering, this way of praying breathes life into any collection of practices.

oneLife Maps is, at its core, interested in helping people to recognize and respond to God in their stories. The seven lies Darrell talks about invitations to consider how a few shifts in perspective on how we think about God and faith effect our ways of being in the world. You don't have to agree with everything he says to appreciate the deep thinking that has led Darrell and others to a healthy spirituality that prioritizes love as its highest value.

If you have engaged in 'Listen to My Life: Maps for Recognizing and Responding to God in My Story' visual life mapping, you'll see that this conversation relates directly to the bottom line on the 'My Life Story' map, where you are asked to consider how you have noticed God, or viewed who God is over the course of your life. This conversation is a great way to help you sort out what stories you have been handed about who you are and who God is -- and prayerfully decide what to take with you, and what to leave behind.

  • 68. Go to the Desert, Wait for Instruction

I love Steve Carter. He's a great conversationalist and a good human being. Listen in as Steve and I (Sharon Swing) talk about spiritual formation and life story. He gave plenty of sermons that included encouraging people to dive into their own life stories while he was preaching at Willow Creek Community Church while I was there. I cheered him on from the cheap seats. Life took quite a turn for Steve and his family a few years back that left him searching for next steps in immediate fashion. He heard the Spirit whisper to his soul, 'Go to the desert and wait for instruction.' Little did he know his wife had been longing for a nudge in that direction.

Steve is now an itinerate teacher at many churches -- sometimes multiple churches on a weekend now that church is virtual. He equips teaching pastors from around the globe.

Find out more about Steve Carter at: https://www.stevecarter.org and listen to his new podcast, https://www.hometeampodcast.com.

  • 67. Are You Responsible To or For Others?

Are you responsible TO others or responsible FOR them? It's a very useful distinction for all of our relationships. It may keep you out of trouble, improve your relationships, and put words to why having kids grow up messes with us as parents! We have used this important piece of work from the book, 'Listen For Heaven's Sake' in many of our 'Listen to My Life' workshops as we teach listening skills and explore why some of our relationships need a tune up, and help us name why we take more on than we need to, or get frustrated when others seem to want to control us.

We highly recommend this important infographic. You can download it here: https://onelifemaps.lpages.co/lead-magnet-responsible-to-responsible-for-request-form

Sibyl Towner and Joan Kelley join Sharon Swing to discuss Mama Maggie Gobran's wisdom on silence.

“I learned that silence is the secret.

Silence your body - to listen to your words.

Silence your tongue - to listen to your thoughts.

Silence your thoughts - to listen to your heart.

Silence your heart - to listen to your spirit.

Silence your spirit - to listen to his spirit.”

  • 61. Human(Kind)

I love this conversation with Ashlee Eiland. I love Ashlee. You will, too.

Please listen to a piece of her story here, and then also read her book, "Human(Kind): How Reclaiming Human Worth and Embracing Radical Kindness Will Bring Us Back Together." Her memoir in short essays recounts events in her life that shaped her view of herself, of God and the world around her. Finding yourself in the midst of so many conflicting messages can be a difficult task, especially when so many people have opinions and assumptions about how you 'should be.' Please read this book and see your own story intermingled with hers. It's an invitation to sort out what to take with you and what to leave behind from your own story, and to find human kindness as the antidote to so much of what ails us personally, and as a society.

Please read this book, and pass it on to your family and friends. It is available from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Human-Kind-Reclaiming-Embracing-Kindness-ebook/dp/B07TZCJS7W/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=human+%28kind%29&qid=1590163102&sr=8-1

(This podcast was recorded prior to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the subsequent protests. Therefore, there are no mentions of this event in our conversation.)

Ashlee Eiland serves as the formation and preaching pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church. She shares God's message of redemption and reconciliation at conferences, colleges, and events around the country. Ashlee earned a BA in international relations from the University of Southern California and completed her master's in organizational leadership at Judson University. She blogs regularly and has contributed articles to Relevant magazine. Ashlee and her husband, Delwin, have three children and live in Grand Rapids.

Audio Meditations as a Thank You for Your Support

We're on a mission to help people recognize and respond to God in their story. Will you help?

Our Patreon subscription, at http://www.patreon.com/onelifemaps offers you access to recorded audio meditations that are created to assist you in becoming self-aware and God-aware.

Sibyl Towner and I (Sharon Swing), co-authored the 'Listen to My Life: Maps for Recognizing and Responding to God in My Story' visual maps, and we produce the oneLifemaps podcast along with our friend and Director of Facilitator Development, Joan Kelley.

We are offering you the opportunity to support the continuation of the oneLifemaps podcast and the publishing of 'Listen to My Life' in and weekly audio meditations as a token of our appreciation.

If we can serve you, please let us know by emailing us here.

    Equipment

We've had some questions about our podcasting equipment. Here is what we use:

    Recorder

    Microphones

    Microphone Stands

    Headset

    Microphone Wind Screens

    Headset Extension Cords

    Headset Cable Splitter

The links in this episode may give us a minuscule amount of affiliate revenue from Amazon, but they won't cost you anything at all. Thanks for the support.
