Insights on business coaching, resilience, and personal growth.
In today’s conversation, Krystal Lee Moore Lucier chats with Mike Pietrzak, a business coach and owner of Michael Henry Co. They explore Mike’s journey through entrepreneurship, the importance of resilience, and the value of mentorship in business.
The Entrepreneurial Journey
Mike reflects on his winding path to becoming a business coach. Starting at a young age, he built multiple businesses, learning valuable lessons through both successes and failures.
"I was not intending to become a business coach out of the womb. I was building businesses... you want to be making mistakes, that's how you grow."
His early experiences taught him the importance of mentorship. He emphasizes how critical it was to surround himself with experienced individuals who could guide him through the challenges of entrepreneurship.
"I always need help and I always surround myself with good people."
Investing in Yourself
Krystal and Mike discuss the common misconception that investing in coaching is an expense rather than an investment. Mike shares his experience with various coaches and highlights the importance of finding the right fit.
"It's not always that the more you pay, the better quality you get."
Krystal adds, "If your coaching isn't helping you with your business, the answer might be to switch it up." This insight is crucial for anyone considering coaching; it’s about finding the right support.
Embracing Failure
Both Krystal and Mike agree that failure is an integral part of growth. Mike shares a personal story about launching an energy company in Africa, which taught him valuable lessons despite its challenges.
"Everything is always working in my favor."
They encourage listeners to view setbacks as opportunities for learning rather than as defeats.
"When you fail, you're actually learning faster than people that are not in the arena at all."
The Importance of Perspective
As the conversation unfolds, Mike and Krystal emphasize the value of reframing experiences. Mike advises that it’s vital to seek support and build a network rather than trying to achieve everything alone.
"You don't want to try to do it all on your own."
Krystal shares her mantra of "not my avatar" to help her move on from challenging clients, highlighting how reframing can lead to growth and clarity in business.
Conclusion
Mike’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, mentorship, and the ability to learn from every experience. As entrepreneurs, we can all benefit from a supportive network and a willingness to embrace failure as part of our growth.

Mike Downie's journey into the world of documentary filmmaking is a testament to the power of curiosity and the courage to pursue one's passion. In this recent conversation with Krystal Lee Moore Lucier, Mike shared his story, from humble beginnings in Kingston to becoming a celebrated director and producer.
Discovering Passion in Unexpected Places
Growing up in a tight-knit family, Mike recalls the pivotal moments that shaped his career.
"I was definitely inspired by Gord's early success... it was hard not to notice that he was having this great adventure."
This inspiration led him to reflect on his own dreams. It was during a car ride after a wedding that he first voiced his desire to become a documentary filmmaker.
"I said, you know, I've been thinking lately that I might want to be a documentary film director, not knowing anything about what that entailed."
The support from his family, particularly Gord Downie, was instrumental in nurturing this budding ambition.
The Path to Filmmaking
Mike's career began in journalism at CBC News, where he learned the ropes of storytelling. His first real directing opportunity came when he pitched a segment on free trade for a popular business show, which ignited his passion for documentary work.
"It was a great thrill... I probably phoned my parents and told them to watch for my little piece."
This experience solidified his commitment to filmmaking and set the stage for his future projects.
Embracing Adventure and Curiosity
Throughout his journey, Mike emphasized the importance of curiosity and adventure. He recounted his youthful escapades, from biking for months to working in a mine, all of which fueled his desire to explore the world.
"I had a bit of a wandering spirit, I suppose."
These experiences not only shaped his perspective but also encouraged him to take risks in his career.
As Mike Downie continues to create impactful documentaries, his story serves as a reminder that listening to our inner voice and embracing curiosity can lead to extraordinary paths. His journey inspires us to seek our own adventures and remain open to the possibilities that lie ahead.
