Brendan McClenehan believes reconnecting with creation can deepen our connection with God, our communities, and the purpose we were made for. Brendan has been a divinity student, church planter, marketing agency leader, and poultry farmer. Today, he serves as church engagement manager for Plant With Purpose.

In this episode of The Redeemed Man, Brendan joins Nate Dewberry to talk about his faith journey, finding purpose, and why caring for creation doesn’t have to be a political issue. They explore our dependence on the natural world, what creation can teach us about God, and how spending time outside can help us live with greater gratitude, responsibility, and purpose.

Dalton Nunamaker was on a nine-month Army deployment, living in a tent in a field in Poland, when he experienced a crippling one-two emotional punch. First his parents told him they were divorcing over issues of alcoholism and infidelity. Then just a few months later, Dalton discovered his wife of less than a year had been unfaithful while he was overseas.

Dalton admits that, as he dealt with the trauma of those betrayals, he’d “given up on [God’s] goodness.” But finding community with The Redeemed, and hearing other men tell their own stories of recovery from betrayal, helped him see that his pain wasn’t pointless. Dalton relates his story to Paul Amos in this week’s episode, offering advice for men as they struggle with their own emotional low points and try to rebuild trust both in other people and in God.

Of the 10 years Josh Summers spent as a missionary in western China, the last few months were by far the hardest: Twice he was hauled into jail by Chinese police for interrogation, the second of which lasted 17 days. And as he sat alone in a cold, barren holding cell with nothing, not even his Bible, he tried to take inventory of what scripture he could remember by heart—and realized he didn’t have nearly as much of it down as he thought he did.

When Josh and his family finally returned to the United States, he vowed he would always have the entire Bible at the ready. That started him on a new mission: to memorize the entire Bible, a mission he talks about with Nate Dewberry in this week’s episode. It’s about much more than just mastering Biblical trivia, Josh says—it’s about using scripture to replace the voices of negativity and self-doubt that we all hear sometimes, and achieving a deeper, more satisfying understanding of the love God has for each of us.

When Jesus tells the crowd, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light,” many of us misinterpret that to mean that everything becomes easier when we start following Jesus. While that’s not the case, God does provide the strength to persevere through our challenges, and someone who shoulders our burdens when life becomes too much to bear. Jordan Castille was a skinny kid who was good at gymnastics and a member of his high school’s cheerleading squad—something it wasn’t easy to be in Texas in the late ’90s. The bullying he experienced, combined with some flawed family relationships, drove him to fill the void with pornography. It was only in college that Jordan came to terms with the damage his addiction was causing and sought help from the Lord.

Now happily married with three children, Jordan is a certified Christian counselor who draws on his own experience to coach other men out of a whole host of unhealthy sexual behaviors – including pornography. This week, Redeemed director Nate Dewberry sits down with Jordan to unpack porn addiction – from the brokenness that spawns it to the communities that can help men get “sober”. They discuss dealing with the anger and betrayal a partner might feel when a porn fixation is revealed, as well as how to make peace with the parts of ourselves that once inspired shame.

His 30th birthday was just around the corner, and Nigel Darius was at a crossroads. He felt like he’d worked hard and done the right things in his twenties, but he didn’t have anything to show for it. He asked God for a new path and a new opportunity, but when God asked him, “Do you believe I can give them to you?” he realized the answer was “No.” Or perhaps more accurately, “Not yet.”

Let’s face it, obedience isn’t a fun topic for most of us. Between an American ethos that prizes individualism and innovation, a culture that pushes indulgence, and a natural human desire to be free from control, we don’t like to feel compelled to follow anyone else’s rules. So how do we break down that resistance and embrace obedience to God? And how can we build in ourselves a desire to heed God’s word, rather than just doing so out of grudging obligation?

In this week’s episode, Redeemed founder Paul Amos and director Nate Dewberry examine obedience from a variety of angles, including cultural attitudes toward obedience, “have to” versus “want to,” and the immense benefits of following God’s instructions, even when it’s a challenge. Micah Davis has more experience with forgiveness than he probably ever wanted to have. The hurtful words spoken over him as a child that stuck with him throughout adolescence, the betrayals by both his father and his godfather, the family secrets that only came to light years later—all of them forced Micah to confront emotional pain at a relatively early age and weigh the cost of reconciliation.

Now a pastor and writer based in Indianapolis, Micah has determined that forgiveness, for all its complexity and messiness, is worth it—and he’s expounded on that topic in several books, as well as this week’s episode of The Redeemed Man. For 17 years Jason Romano had what many American men would consider a dream job: working at ESPN producing shows ranging from College Gameday to Monday Night Football broadcasts. So why did he leave it behind to make less money at a startup podcast? For Jason, it was simple: he realized he was drawing too much of his identity from work and not enough from Christ. 

Now the host and producer of the “Sports Spectrum” podcast, Jason talks with Nate Dewberry this week about that life change, as well as what started him on a path to discipleship that, nearly two decades later, is ongoing. He offers important advice for men struggling to discuss their faith with family members, as well as people in danger of letting their spiritual path be dictated by strangers online.
