Where is the church headed, and who will lead it? As a pastor himself, founder of Next Generation Leader, and author of the thoroughly researched book Future Church, Terry Parkman has thought a lot about those questions. In searching for the answers, he’s discovered that what Gen Z wants from life, culture, and faith differs in some surprising ways from what previous generations wanted—and what many churches currently provide.
In this week’s episode of The Redeemed Man, Terry talks with Nate Dewberry about the future of the church and how church leaders can adapt to the changing needs of newer generations. They also cover a wide range of topics that will resonate with today’s men, from overcoming self-doubt to re-centering ourselves so that the ways we seek freedom and individuality don’t end up becoming a prison.

Prayer is the bedrock of discipleship; ideally, it’s a daily practice that brings us into a closer relationship with God. Yet it still feels daunting to so many of us. Are we praying often enough, and for long enough? Are we having a conversation with God, or just rattling off a list of wishes? Are we bringing our true selves to him, or just putting on a performance?
For this week’s episode, Redeemed founder Paul Amos and ministry director Nate Dewberry christen our new Atlanta podcast studio with an in-depth discussion on prayer, the misconceptions even devout Christ-followers have about it, and what we can do to feel more fulfilled and connected to God in our daily prayer lives. No step-by-step instructions here, because there’s no single “right” way to pray—but there are some thought-provoking suggestions and guidance for ensuring that what’s central to our prayers is not our wishes and desires, but God’s.

Though he’s known as “Pastor Neb” to his congregation at Pathway City Church in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, Nebiye Kelile didn’t always lead a Christ-centered life. Though he was born into a devoutly Christian Ethiopian-immigrant family, he strayed from the Lord in his teenage years before recognizing the unfulfilling path he was on and returning home as a real-life “prodigal son.”
Now having rediscovered the Lord, Pastor Neb can offer plenty of advice borne from experience—both for men desperately trying to break free of sin, and for men who have rediscovered their faith but are struggling to build a deep connection with the Lord. That guidance, along with reflections on fatherhood and tips for a more satisfying prayer life, are the topics he discusses with Nate Dewberry in this week’s enlightening episode of The Redeemed Man.

On the surface, Michael Rutherford had the kind of life men fantasize about: a phenomenally successful business that spanned the globe, a jet-setting lifestyle, a beautiful fiancée, a car that cost more than many people’s houses. But when he lost it all in what felt like the blink of an eye, he realized he had no choice but to put what was left of his life in God’s hands. God didn’t restore Michael’s riches, but He offered something Michael appreciates even more—freedom from superficial worries and a sense of true purpose. Michael talks with Nate Dewberry this week about that mission—helping other people dig deep and uncover their true God-given purpose—as well as other gifts, such as clarity and patience, that have been unexpected benefits of his riches-to-rags story.

If all you did was look at Matt Garner’s résumé, you might think he had life all figured out—a decade in executive leadership at AT&T, a successful consulting firm, multiple entrepreneurial business ventures. Yet he says he was still living in “grayness” because the things that should’ve felt fulfilling didn’t, and he felt disconnected from those with whom he should’ve been closest. But thanks to his wife reintroducing him to faith and providing a living example of God’s grace, Matt and his family are living for the Lord and thriving—and Matt has recently joined The Redeemed as our new director of groups and leader development. Matt tells his story of redemption in part one of his conversation with ministry founder Paul Amos.
