Billy Blanchard inherited a proud legacy indeed—that of his father James Blanchard, the Georgia business icon who led Synovus Financial Corporation through an era of rapid growth and created a forum at Columbus State University to promote the principles of servant leadership. But that still left Billy with the question of how to pass that legacy on to his own children—and what kind of a new legacy to create for himself. As a child, Chris Shinnick remembers, he was uncommonly blessed to have two parents who were authentic and consistent as role models for a faithful life. Today, as a father of three and pastor of Manna Church West Florida in Niceville, Fla., he has the blessing—and bears the burden—of presenting a similarly godly example for both his family and his congregation. In conversation with Nate Dewberry, Chris talks about the importance of letting children find their own answers to questions of faith, as well as being a parenting “team” with his wife, the lessons they learned from losing an infant child, and putting grace and repentance before shame and condemnation.

Over the course of 18 years as a college football coach, and another decade at the high school level, Patrick Nix—a former standout QB at Auburn—has seen plenty of ups and downs, wins and losses. After months of prayer and consulting with people he knew, Simon decided he’d figured out what the dream meant: Instead of inheriting his father’s business, he should forge out on a venture of his own—and give away 50% of the profits. Since coming to the United States from South Africa in the early 1990s, Mark Immelman has risen steadily through the ranks of the sports broadcasting world, becoming a fixture on CBS Sports Network’s golf coverage and hosting a popular podcast on PGATour.com. His success, though, hasn’t come without its share of challenges, temptations, and frustrations. Few people have had their faith tested quite like Brad Palm has. A helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, Palm was dropping off some special forces on a mission in eastern Afghanistan when the rotors on his damaged MH-47 Chinook failed, resulting in a crash that killed one of his close friends. Seriously injured, blind in one eye, and facing the prospect of never flying again, Palm “wrestled” with discouragement and the thorny question of whether he could still trust in God, but found his faith and purpose renewed after “preaching the gospel to [him]self” and receiving the support and encouragement of his faith community. His story is sure to resonate with military members and anyone struggling with matters of faith.

Mayo Sowell’s career has taken him to the pulpit, but his life path could’ve led to a different and much darker place. An Auburn football standout whose pro career was cut short by injury, he got into the drug trade and was eventually sentenced to five years in federal prison. Toward the end of his sentence, though, a chance encounter with a fellow inmate guided him to God and a total change in his world view. With frankness and humor, Mayo talks about the lessons he’s learned over the course of his eventful life, and about the message he tries to put forth as pastor at LIIV Atlanta, the church he founded last year. Men of all ages and backgrounds can benefit from his advice for maintaining healthy friendships and staying humble in a world full of temptation.

So often we think we’re doing the “noble thing” by keeping our pain and brokenness hidden; Matt Bostic knows all too well that this isn’t the case. In this podcast, Bostic tells the story of how he bounced from ministry to ministry in the wake of his mother’s death, eventually developing a drinking problem that took him to some of the lowest depths of his life. In the process of recovery, he learned that he didn’t have to take on all his problems and responsibilities alone—trusting other people, and God, helped him find the direction and purpose he was desperately seeking. Today, as the program director for Life House University, a ministry helping those who have recently got out of jail or rehab get a fresh start, Bostic says he’s found that not going alone is the best way to help yourself—as well as others in need.
