  • #104 - The Biggest Mistakes We've Made in Business

Deanna and Kelly get real in sharing the biggest mistakes they’ve made in their entrepreneurial journey, giving small business advice to other mompreneurs to help inform and empower them to pursue their dreams. There is no room for perfection in business, as mistakes will inevitably be made by all of us. The lonely road can feel even more isolating when dealing with our missteps.

Our mistakes were costly, both financially and emotionally. We share them with the hope that you can learn from our experience as you navigate your own path. From business coaches to childcare, we discuss what we wish we’d know then, and how it can help you now.

What we discuss - don’t miss it!

    • Making mistakes is a normal part of the business journey.
    • Why the particular struggles of business and motherhood are a collective burden.
    • How working with a business coach could have saved Deanna from many of the costly mistakes she made with her nonprofit.
    • Why Kelly had to learn once, then twice, that having business agreements and partnerships in writing is non-negotiable.
    • How you can effectively work with friends and preserve your relationship.
    • Why paying yourself first is critical.
    • How avoiding adequate childcare as you grow your business cheats both you and your children.

    QUOTES
"Your business may be unique, but you’re not alone in your struggles of business or motherhood."

“There is something inherently adventurous about the spirit of an entrepreneur. We feel like a maverick or a rock star if we do it on our own.”

“If you’re going to collaborate with a friend, if you care about that friendship, then you need to sign a contract.”

“Build your business in a way that the first person who gets paid is you.”

“Along with the rock star mentality, we also have a martyr mentality. ‘I need to sacrifice myself on the altar of this business by not paying myself, doing it on my own, and not asking for help with my children.’”

“[My 4 year-old son] has specific needs as a 4 year-old child and I have specific needs as an adult in business, and both of them are equally important and need to be cared for.”

  • #103 - Working Well With the Time You Have

Is life leaving you feeling less than refreshed? The stress of trying to get everything done is the #1 issue Deanna hears from coaching clients and the Refreshed Moms community. How do we carve out time so that we can approach our daily and weekly routines with confidence and clarity?

In this episode, Deanna and Kelly discuss Deanna’s step-by-step time management system that will bring sanity to your life, even with all of the unexpected twists and turns in a mompreneur’s life. With the tools shared here, you will create a life-giving workflow that will bring new intention, focus, and inspiration to your business.

What we discuss - don’t miss it!

    • Why over-commitment is the reason you feel out of control and frazzled.
    • How to carve out time for what matters to you without feeling like you’re dropping balls everywhere.
    • Why comparing ourselves to male mentors may set us up for unrealistic expectations.
    • Why creating an effective workflow breathes life into us and empowers you to move your goals forward in a systematic way.
    • How we can apply the same inherent innovation we moms have with home and kids  to finding ways to get work tasks done.
    • Why multitasking is not your friend and nearly burned Deanna’s house down.
    • The 3 step process
    • Why not filling every block of time in your schedule is critical in creating your success.

    QUOTES

“If they’re not trying to do this (run a business) with children playing LEGOS under their desk, then we’re not on the same playing field.”

“Because of our ability (as mothers) to be innovative to get things done, we’ve got to apply that same innovation to our workflow.”

“You have to know what you have to do and see it in black and white, otherwise you end up with such unrealistic expectations for yourself and nothing gets done.”

“This is going to empower you to move your business forward in a systematic way, but it’s also going to protect your sanity while you do it.”

  • #102 - How My Self-Care Started My Business With Faith Broussard Cade

It’s hard enough to balance family, motherhood, business, and self-care, but throw any big wrench into that mix, and some of us find ourselves crumbling to a heap. Life took Faith Broussard Cade down this road last year. While working as a mental health therapist, running a baking business, and being a wife and mom to a toddler, the aftermath of a car accident left Faith on medical leave and searching for a way to breathe new life into her own self-care.

Her methodical and simple choice to write affirming notes to herself - and share them via social media - changed the trajectory of her recovery, her business, and her outlook on all of it.

In this episode, we deep-dive with Faith on the topic of work-life balance, and how self-care does not have to be sacrificed during the season of motherhood or the pursuit of a successful business.

What we discuss - don’t miss it!

    • Balancing the running of a business with raising children is hard! We have to do what is best for our own families, and that often looks different than what we see on social media.
    • Marking out time every day - no matter how small! - to move business along and to care for ourselves.
    • How a car accident left Faith with a concussion and mild traumatic brain injury - and how this altered her life as a mom and entrepreneur as well as how she practices self-care.
    • Giving ourselves grace instead of imposing our own mom-guilt.
    • Solo trips to Target really can fill our self-care cups.
    • What self-care looks like on a limited budget.
    • Self-care from a Christian perspective is not only not selfish, but also a ministry

    QUOTES
“What I have figured out is, I have to do what works for my family.” 13:11

“I give myself a lot of grace and I do away with the guilt.” 17:50

“If your bandwidth is one task a day to move your business forward, that’s perfectly okay.” 21:20

“Surely everyone can find five minutes for themselves every day.” 31:45

“I do not believe God requires us to be a martyr… to be humiliated in the name of love. He already did that for us.” 39:45

“You don’t have to have anything on your schedule to be unavailable.” 52:30

“‘No’ is a complete sentence...” 53:30

  • #101 - My Husband & My Dreams

If you’re married and your spouse is not an entrepreneur, then you’re most likely very familiar with being misunderstood (and possibly dismissed) as you embark on, yet again, another business idea.

As mompreneurs and visionaries, we can see with deep-seated passionate vision, how an idea can work - how it can actually serve people and make money. But when you sit down to explain it to your husband, you’re greeted with something like, “That’s nice, dear.” or possibly, “How much is all this gonna cost us?”

If you’re anything like me (Deanna), your husband has already supported you in more than one endeavor, and you’re feeling a little bit of fear in your heart as you show him an ad for a paid course, business retreat or workshop you’d like to attend. Why? Because it’s just one more thing to spend money on for your business before your business is actually turning a profit.

Yeah, those conversations aren’t fun to have. Trust me I know. What we can’t do, however, is allow fear of our husband’s responses and his not understanding (or believing in) our dreams stop us for going after them. We must instead figure out how to do this lovingly without dismissing their feelings, perspectives, and valid fears of the risks involved.

What we discuss - don’t miss it!

    • Why it’s so important to spend time understanding your non-entrepreneurial spouse.
    • Knowing that although risk-taking may come natural to you, it may be terrifying  for your husband.
    • You can’t keep a true entrepreneur from creating, because that’s what they’ve been created for.
    • Creating a practice of talking candidly with your husband about the financial needs of your business.
    • What to do if your husband does not believe in your business.

    QUOTES

7:34 If you don’t communicate honestly, openly, transparently, completely with your spouse, even as things change, that’s just a recipe for problems from the get go.

16:36 I saw the vision and went along for the ride and it changed my life and changed the course of my career.

22:13 To the person who is married to the entrepreneur, understand that your entrepreneur spouse has been created to create in this way, and you cannot separate them from that without them losing little pieces of themselves.

26:04 If you want to not spend through your (bank) account, you need to allow your spouse to pay for a good coach, because a good coach will make sure you’re on the right track to creating income.

31:45 If you go purchase something (for your business) that you don’t implement. You’ve got to get really clear what your needs are so your husband can see how this is impacting your bottom line.

37:30 What do we do when our husbands don’t believe in what we are doing? We believe in ourselves (anyway).
