  • 091: Walking Your Talk

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, confronts the ways we don't walk our talk.  Looking at the inconsistencies in which we engage and the unintentional, or sometimes intentional, lies we tell ourselves and by extension, others.  Do we want to be inconsistent with ourselves and the people who matter most to us?  No, but we do it anyway because we're afraid.

What are the subtle ways you're not being true to who you want to be?

  • 090: My Partner Is Lazy

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, looks at a conversation he had with someone about how they perceived that their partner was lazy and how that was negatively impacting their relationship.

We so frequently assign negative connotation to laziness.  That internal orientation to laziness has the capacity to warp our perspective on those around us.  What would it be like if we were better able to recognize our innate bias?  How might it improve our relationships if we better communicated the importance of certain acts or behaviors that the other party is doing or not doing?

  • 089: The Power of Fellowship

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, shares some reflections from his recent PTSD anniversary related to an incident that occurred during one of his combat deployments to Iraq.

In a conversation with a client, the client remarked on how fellowship is about feeling like you're "part of it."  Despite all the work that Sean puts into allowing his clients to be free of a compulsion to have external validation, there is unquestionably a deep power in feeling like we belong, like we are understood.

We often fail to connect with that deep power because of so many different fears, not least of which is the fear that things will get messy.  But what if we allowed ourselves to give that gift to those around us?  What impact might that have?

  • 088: The Power of Thoughts Over Time

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, reflects on a passage from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations.

Such as thy thoughts and ordinary cogitations are, such will thy mind be in time.  This reflection, from one of Rome's most powerful and effective emperors gives meaningful insight into the power of small inputs over time.  Most people's relationships with their lives are made up of tiny thoughts, emotions, and habits repeated over decades.

Frequently, this shows up in terribly self-critical and self-destructive language that depresses the person and what they are attempting to achieve in their life.  Mastering one's inner language offers a way out of this long-running trap.

  • 087: Fear and the Authentic Self

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, addresses a couple topics that often go together.  Namely, where do we allow fear to hold us back from being and expressing our authentic self?

Borrowing from conversations from his recent interactions, Sean looks at where it is the individuals first learn to stifle their authentic selves and what is driving that urge to conform.

  • 086: Mistaking Rigidity for Resilience

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, challenges a conventional mindset that many of his military clients have maintained.  Often, high performers confuse their rigidity for a sense of resilience.

Their focus is often on the ways in which they have succeeded despite all the odds being against them.  However, what's missing from their awareness is the ways in which they are making themselves brittle, like metal that's been flexed too many times.

  • 085: Handling Bad Things with a Healthy "Immune Response"

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, sets off on a potentially polarizing discussion about what we can learn from different response approaches to a virus.  In the global pandemic we have seen different approaches being used to help people survive the virus.  Before we go any further, let's be clear that Sean is not advocating for or against any medical course of action in regard to the pandemic or any other illness.

It is simply that these different approaches can serve as useful metaphor for how we as individuals maintain healthy personal and professional lives from the sense of our relationships, sense of fulfillment, and emotional well-being, and not from a medical perspective.

  • 084: How Perceptions of Power Affect Leaders

In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, addresses another suggestion from a client.  As a bit of context, this client founded and runs their own marketing firm but was always held back from achieving their full potential, in part, because of their negative associations around power.

So, today we'll look at how perceptions of power affect leaders.  Specifically, how not having a healthy relationship with the concept of power ends up ruining teams and organizations.  Moreover, we'll be looking at what the benefits of healthy power are, especially through the lens of the popular concept of servant leadership.
