Writing is essential in every person's life, as it is a complex task vital for our learning, and it is usually acquired in the early years of life. Becoming a strong writer takes time and needs to be taught explicitly. However, dysgraphia, a learning disorder in written expression, can present with different symptoms at different developmental stages.

In this episode, I discuss the signs and symptoms of linguistic dysgraphia in every developmental stage of a person, as it may vary at every stage. For grades K to two, a child may have trouble labeling pictures with a few words, or they will write sentences that are hard to understand. For grades three to five, they will need help with organization and content for different forms of writing, while middle schoolers might struggle with minor errors. However, it's important to note that dysgraphia is not related to intelligence, and individuals with dysgraphia may have strengths in other areas, such as verbal communication or problem-solving.

Dysgraphia is a neurological condition that affects writing abilities and fine motor skills. This condition of a student or a child leads them to struggle in putting their thoughts into words on paper. We all know that many school assignments involve writing, and Dysgraphia can cause problems for students in meeting the school's curriculum. The estimated occurrence of children with Dysgraphia in some form is  4-20% of the population.

In this episode, I talk about what Dysgraphia is and how it impacts a child's ability to write effectively and efficiently. I also discuss the primary signs and symptoms of Dysgraphia and the significance of educating ourselves about it, as it is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. Lastly, I shared the four types of Dysgraphia and what it looks like for children or adults.

The alarming shortage of speech-language pathologists in Africa is mainly related to the limited availability of educational programs in speech-language pathology. There is limited research on neurodiversity in various African countries, and cultural attitudes towards neurodivergent individuals vary widely. However, there are some initiatives and organizations that are working towards greater acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity.

Jeannette Roberes,  a speech pathologist and software engineer, shares what she does and she explains why she is relevant to the Dyslexia Mom Boss podcast. Jeannette also discusses what neurodiversity looks like in some African countries as cultural attitudes and practices towards neurodivergent individuals vary widely and what is available accommodations for neurodivergent individuals. The hesitation to certify that a child is "dyslexic" extends beyond the desire to avoid a term that may hurt children. Many schools across the country have long refused to use the term, allowing many to avoid providing special education services mandated by federal law. According to scores of interviews with parents, students, researchers, attorneys, and instructors around the country, many public schools fail to recognize kids with dyslexia and ignore their needs.

Candi Sellers, a teacher, parent and academic language therapist, and an Orton-Gillingham Fellow, shares about her profession and how she teaches her own child at home. She is highly invested in her children’s education and has a personal understanding of the challenges that parents of dyslexic children face. She also delves into what parents should look for in a practitioner and the importance of finding the right practitioner to work with. She also emphasizes that parents should look for someone who has specialized training in dyslexia and who takes a holistic approach to treatment.  

Candi also stated how she individualizes therapy plans for each family as dyslexia is a complex condition that affects children in different ways, so it's important to tailor the treatment approach to each child's specific needs.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 students have dyslexia. In this episode, we’ll talk about how speech-language pathologists successfully diagnose and treat reading disorders and the book I co-authored - The SLP Guide to Dyslexia.

The fascinating field of Speech-Language Pathology is not well known. It is dedicated to improving the communication abilities of individuals with speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Courtney Overton, a Speech-language pathologist and literacy specialist will share about her journey to becoming a speech language pathologist. Since it is a lesser-known field specially for people of color she will discuss the percentage of black speech pathologists and how SLP’s diagnose their patients. Courtney discusses how children can be diagnosed with dyslexia at an extremely young age and what steps parents should take to ensure their child receives appropriate care.
