  • RTL05- Low Back Pain Part 2 with Dr. Eric Lagoy

Eric Lagoy, RTL coach and head of programming, joins us again to continue our conversation about back pain. Eric is an OCS board certified physical therapist who specializes in treating barbell athletes and field athletes. Eric is part of Clinical Athlete and is also an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University. Eric also has vast experience in the weight room with an undergraduate degree in Strength and Conditioning and as a competitive powerlifter.

In episode 5, Eric talks about he manages his clients with low back pain, especially in regard to lifters. His approach focuses more on movement rather than passive modalities. Eric talks about he manipulates training variables in order to keep lifters lifting and prevent them from detraining as they manage low back pain symptoms. Nocebo and placebo are also covered in this discussion along with how healthcare providers and coaches should help to empower their clients and promote self-efficacy rather than having clients and patients depend on them for everything.

    • Which mental approaches yield the best results on meet day, and how to control our competitive energy through finding our individualized “flow state”
    • Technique - when should we fix one variable at a time versus completely overhauling it? When does technique not really matter?
    • What keeps athletes motivated and consistent for the long haul
    • How to fluidly shift perspectives to achieve ideal competitive outcomes
    • What beginners, intermediates, and advanced lifters get wrong when establishing their priorities as athletes
    • Plus some background on Carlos Reyes as an athlete and first responder, and how those experiences have shaped his training, nutritional and conditioning philosophies.
