In today's reading from Jeremiah 46:1–47:7, the prophet turns from Judah to the nations, announcing God's judgment on Egypt and Philistia. Egypt marches out in confidence and is shattered at Carchemish, the coastal cities of Philistia melt away before an enemy from the north, and the sword of the Lord does not rest until His purpose is finished. These oracles remind us that the Lord rules over every nation, not only His own people, and that no army, alliance, or ancient power can stand when He has spoken. Yet even here God speaks tenderly to those who are His: "Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, for I am with you." He promises to discipline in just measure rather than destroy — a mercy that finds its fullest expression in Jesus, in whom we are corrected in love and never abandoned.
