In today’s reading from Jeremiah 50:1–40 and 51:59, we hear God’s final word against Babylon, the great empire He used as an instrument of judgment but would not allow to stand forever in its pride. Around 539 B.C., these prophecies moved toward fulfillment as Babylon’s downfall drew near, proving once again that no kingdom can exalt itself against the Lord and endure. These chapters remind us that God is sovereign even over the mightiest nations - using them for His purposes, then bringing them low when their arrogance, cruelty, and idolatry are complete.
