In today's reading from Isaiah 65:1–25; 66:1–24; 2 Kings 19:37; and 2 Chronicles 33:10–17, Isaiah's grand vision closes with the breathtaking promise of new heavens and a new earth, where God will create Jerusalem to be a joy and wipe away the sorrows of His people. Yet alongside this hope, the Lord warns that He looks to the humble and contrite in spirit, not to those who merely go through the motions of worship. In 2 Chronicles, we see this truth lived out: Manasseh, the most wicked king of Judah, is brought low in captivity—and in his distress, he humbles himself, repents, and turns back to God. In today's reading from Isaiah 60:1–22; 61:1–11; 62:1–12; 63:1–19; and 64:1–12, God's promises reach a stunning crescendo—calling His people to arise and shine because the Lord's glory has risen upon them, and revealing the Anointed Servant who will bring good news to the poor, freedom to captives, and comfort to those who mourn. Yet these breathtaking visions of restoration have not yet reached their fulfillment. The Jerusalem Isaiah describes is not the earthly city we see today, but the heavenly Jerusalem that will one day come down from above (Rev. 21:2; Gal. 4:26)—the city whose light is the Lamb Himself (Rev. 19:13). Alongside these promises, Isaiah also cries out in repentance, pleading for God to rend the heavens and come down. These chapters lift our eyes to Jesus and invite us to live as people of hope, repentance, and expectant waiting for the kingdom that is still to come.
