“It's just playing, I'm tellin' ya!” We’re taking a walk on the wild side with Noel Marshall’s notorious big cat passion project Roar.

Marshall himself plays research scientist Hank, who lives in a gigantic compound somewhere in East Africa with an outrageous amount of lions, tigers and other assorted megapredators running rampant through and around his home. Distracted by a disastrous meeting with his funding committee, he forgets to pick up his visiting family - wife Madeleine (Tippi Hedren) and their three kids (Marshall’s sons John and Jerry, and Hedren’s daughter Melanie Griffith). When the family arrive at the cat house just as Hank has belatedly set off to retrieve them, they spend a nerve-shredding day alone with the massive creatures. 

The film’s flimsy story often pales in comparison to the circumstances of its production - Marshall and Hedren assembling their enormous collection and housing them in a huge preservation outside of Los Angeles, then sinking over half a decade and most of their fortune into a film that sent scores of cast and crew to the hospital, only to see it barely scrape a few token international releases before sinking into obscurity for over 30 years. Patrick and Devlin are here to talk about a rare and memorable screening they went to a few months back, and gawp in disbelief at the clawesome carnage on display.

"Hey, Elliot, where's your goblin?" Our sporadic Steven Spielberg season returns with the film that launched a thousand suburban-kids-on-bikes knockoffs, 1982's megahit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

When an intergalactic flight makes an emergency departure from Earth for fear of discovery, the alien visitors leave behind one of their own - a stumpy, long-necked, wide-eyed, curious explorer who winds up hiding out in the backyard of 10-year-old Elliot (Henry Thomas). The pair form a close affinity, as the youngster recruits his siblings (Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore) to help hide the creature from their put-upon mother (Dee Wallace). But THE GOVERNMENT have other ideas...

Sam Neill (1947–2026)

He could anchor a summer blockbuster one year and disappear into something strange and art-house the next — with over a 150 credits across every genre, we thought it only fitting that we marked his passing on the show, our very small and inconsequential way of saying thank you. We have only done two films where Sam Neill is credited, Episode 75 was orignally released in 2021 and I except that Event Horizon is not one of his better films, but we did alight on the 'Ham Neill' award, which we will now retire and come up with a dafter name for those performances that stand-out amongst the cast, and grabs your attention. We will now look to do one of his lesser-known films alongside Jurrasic Park to truly honour his craft. But a short confession from me, Sam Neill's performance in Jurrasic Park really made an impression on me as a kid, the character of Dr Alan Grant really distilled my own relationship with my father, at first distant and reluctant, but ever the protector and as I grew up, our bond as father and son grew and I always remember thinking that my ideal father would be Dr Alan Grant, and luckily for me, that is what eventually happended - except for the Dinosours, the over-sized blue shirt and the general awe of coolness that Sam Neill carries throughout the film, I guess I am carrying on about the emotional arc of the character! Anyway, thank Sam Neill and Rest in Peace.

Where we’re going, we won’t need eyes to see! It’s off to the ionosphere surrounding Neptune for us, as we board the Lewis and Clark to salvage the wreckage of Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1997 Gothic space nightmare Event Horizon. 

After a mysterious 7-year disappearance, the titular imposing, experimental, wormhole-navigating interstellar craft has reappeared, sending the ship’s creator Dr. Weir (a reliably livewire Sam Neill) off on the recovery mission alongside stoic shuttle Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburn) and an assorted Anglo-American crew including such lauded thesps as Jason Isaacs and Sean Pertwee. The ship’s mysterious gravity drive seems to hold the key to the gruesome mystery as to what happened to its original crew - and to the horrifying visions stalking the new one.

A critical and commercial misfire on release, but a sleeper hit on video, the film (and especially its infamous ‘visions of hell’ rapid-fire montages) struck a chord with many a budding gorehound, and retains a sizeable cult following to this day. Did Gali, Devlin and Matt follow Dr. Weir through the gateway, or did they want to join Miller in vapourising it from a safe distance?

“One, two, three! And I don't even miss her, two, three! One, two, three! And I don't even miss her, two, three...!” 1970s comedians’ comedian Albert Brooks co-writes and directs his acerbic 1981 relationship comedy-drama sophomore feature Modern Romance.

Self-sabotaging film editor Robert (Brooks) arranges a hasty breakup, seemingly the latest of many, from frustrated girlfriend Mary (Kathryn Harrold), before embarking on a sputtering quest to recover from his self-inflicted heartbreak with self-improvement, vitamins, and jogging, and throwing himself into work on a low-budget space adventure for a neurotic director (James L. Brooks). Robert and Mary’s inevitable reconciliation comes with inevitable complications. 

Subjected to poor audience test card scores, who perhaps expected a whimsical romantic comedy, and a mixed critical reaction, the film initially limped to a box office take that covered only half of its budget. But a cult following soon emerged, including no less an authority than Stanley Kubrick, who praised its insightful depiction of jealousy. Confirmed cult follower Devlin brings Gali on board for a first-time watch, as they talk romantic tropes, genre subversion, and the efficacy of apology by way of talking doll.

F*ck-a-doodle-doo. As spring turns to summer, so the nuptial season is upon us, and we’re celebrating with the breakthrough 1994 Brit romcom classic Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Charmingly dishevelled serial monogamist bachelor Charles (Hugh Grant) meets mysterious and beautiful American Carrie (Andie McDowell) at a wedding for which he is the best man. Over the course of the titular series of ceremonies, their romance blossoms and bumbles, while Charles’ eccentric friendship group trade creatively expletive-laced witticisms. 

After a successful career in TV comedy, with the influential Not the Nine O’Clock News leading to sitcom classics Blackadder and Mr Bean, Richard Curtis scored his first cinema hit with a film that launched an avalanche of imitators, and arguably changed the face of British cinema for decades to come. David Biggins joins the gang to see who gets to catch the bouquet, and who’ll end the night throwing up in their rented loafers.

“Stupid is as stupid does.” We're lacing up our Nikes and just… feel like running with the multi-OSCAR-winning 1994 Robert Zemeckis megahit Forrest Gump.

The titular Forrest, Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), born the simple son of a single mother in the Jim Crow South, guilelessly glides through the second half of the American Century in an episodic tale that takes in desegregation, the war in Vietnam, ping pong in Mao’s China, the fall of Richard Nixon, and the attendant political and social upheavals of the Boomer generation.

Over 30 years on, does Forrest still offer us a pristine box of chocolates, or has it melted and curdled into a sickly sweet, gooey mess?

“A man who looks at a rock must have a lot on his mind.” James Bond and Sarah Connor face a whole lotta lava in the 1997 disaster epic Dante’s Peak.

Bereaved yet dashing volcanologist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is dispatched to the titular tiny town that sits nestled beneath a hulking, dormant volcano. Mayor and coffee shop proprietor Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton) believes Harry’s increasing concerns about the rising threat of an eruption, but is doubted by the rest of his U.S.G.S. team - especially his skeptical boss, who delays an evacuation with potentially disastrous consequences.

Sneaking out mere months before its igneous competition (and previous Rewind episode) Volcano in one of those curious 1990s duelling releases, the film eschews that picture’s metropolitan carnage and awkward social commentary for a down home, old school, small town tale that makes space for big mayhem. Boiled grannies ensue.

“You'll never get anywhere treating your helmet like a lunchbox son.” We’re getting into our three-point stance on the mini gridiron for the 1994 family sports comedy Little Giants.

Local legend Kevin O’Shea (Ed O’Neill), a Heisman Trophy-winning football hero, is running tryouts for his Pee-Wee football team, where he mercilessly discards the ‘misfit’ kids. Among them, his own niece - Becky “Icebox” O’Shea (Shawna Waldron), one of the toughest players refused because she is a girl. She maneuvers her dad, mild-mannered garage owner and Kevin’s overshadowed little brother Danny (Rick Moranis), into coaching a rival team made up of those same misfits, with an inevitable big game collision looming in the third act.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produced this sporting underdog tale, coming in the wake of the likes of The Mighty Ducks and The Sandlot, which inspired a young Patrick to put on an American accent and toss the pigskin in his Leicestershire back garden. Will his affection for this somewhat-forgotten kids film similarly inspire the less-nostalgic Devlin, a lifelong NFL fan who can't remember whether he actually watched this as a kid, or just saw the trailer too often? Join us as we finally determine just how many fart jokes are too many fart jokes.

My wife loves ya! The Rewind Movie Podcast goes small screen as we continue our meandering tour around the career of Steven Spielberg with his feature-length episode of the legendary mystery show Columbo - Murder by the Book. 

In 1971, Spielberg - the golden boy of Universal, and still a few months out from his seminal TV movie Duel - was hired to direct the first true episode of the series, after three early outings for the character, the latter two starring New York theatre actor-turned-Hollywood transplant Peter Falk. This tale of a mystery novelist slaying his soon-to-be-ex writing partner simultaneously acts as the blueprint for the beloved programme, and a forum for the prodigious director’s mastery of camerawork and scene construction.

Gali and Devlin’s shared history with the series goes back more than 20 years, with many a lazy Sunday spent in the company of the disheveled detective. Join us as we discuss the character’s origins, the development of the show’s tropes, pick our favourite murder styles, and revel in a cinematic legend’s earliest evidence of their technical prowess.
