“You'll never get anywhere treating your helmet like a lunchbox son.” We’re getting into our three-point stance on the mini gridiron for the 1994 family sports comedy Little Giants.

Local legend Kevin O’Shea (Ed O’Neill), a Heisman Trophy-winning football hero, is running tryouts for his Pee-Wee football team, where he mercilessly discards the ‘misfit’ kids. Among them, his own niece - Becky “Icebox” O’Shea (Shawna Waldron), one of the toughest players refused because she is a girl. She maneuvers her dad, mild-mannered garage owner and Kevin’s overshadowed little brother Danny (Rick Moranis), into coaching a rival team made up of those same misfits, with an inevitable big game collision looming in the third act.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produced this sporting underdog tale, coming in the wake of the likes of The Mighty Ducks and The Sandlot, which inspired a young Patrick to put on an American accent and toss the pigskin in his Leicestershire back garden. Will his affection for this somewhat-forgotten kids film similarly inspire the less-nostalgic Devlin, a lifelong NFL fan who can't remember whether he actually watched this as a kid, or just saw the trailer too often? My wife loves ya! The Rewind Movie Podcast goes small screen as we continue our meandering tour around the career of Steven Spielberg with his feature-length episode of the legendary mystery show Columbo - Murder by the Book. 

In 1971, Spielberg - the golden boy of Universal, and still a few months out from his seminal TV movie Duel - was hired to direct the first true episode of the series, after three early outings for the character, the latter two starring New York theatre actor-turned-Hollywood transplant Peter Falk. This tale of a mystery novelist slaying his soon-to-be-ex writing partner simultaneously acts as the blueprint for the beloved programme, and a forum for the prodigious director’s mastery of camerawork and scene construction.

Gali and Devlin’s shared history with the series goes back more than 20 years, with many a lazy Sunday spent in the company of the disheveled detective. Join us as we discuss the character’s origins, the development of the show’s tropes, pick our favourite murder styles, and revel in a cinematic legend’s earliest evidence of their technical prowess.

“I'd like to report a truck driver who's been endangering my life!” Our Steven Spielberg Series continues with a detour back to where it all started - 1971’s TV movie-turned-theatrical debut DUEL.

Mild mannered travelling salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) finds himself the unexplained target of escalating threats from a mysterious, smoke-belching truck’s largely unseen driver, as they cross the barren California desert highways locked in a cat-and-mouse chase towards an inevitably deadly conclusion.

Under contract as the wunderkind development project of then-Universal president Sid Sheinberg, the 24-year-old Spielberg lobbied to follow up his seminal Columbo episode with this Richard Matheson-penned thriller as a forum to flex his aptitude for visceral action and tension. After pulling in a very respectable audience share and earning a run in European cinemas, Spielberg was ready to take his explorations of overmatched man versus an unstoppable force onto the water…

Bangarang! We continue our journey through the filmography of The Beard Himself, Steven Spielberg, with a contrasting look at fatherhood in 1991’s grand kids’ fantasy Hook.

A now adult Peter Pan (Robin Williams) has no memories of his time in Neverland, having committed himself to a life of dour responsibility as a successful lawyer under the name Peter Banning. Returning for the first time to the home of Wendy, grandmother to his wife, he receives a sharp reminder of his previous adventures when Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his two young children - necessitating a crash course in whimsy, imagination, flying, and sword fighting from the Lost Boys, now led by the brooding Rufio.

While Spielberg tackling the story of the boy who never grew up seemed like a slam dunk, the project took almost a decade to make it to the screen, and bloated in running time, shoot days, budget, and tabloid intrigue along the way. A sizeable box office haul couldn’t dispel a reputation as a critical failure and a financial disappointment, relative to expectations. But, did the Rewind Lost Boys dig into a steaming imagination buffet of nostalgic fun, or were we left lamenting our lost marbles.

The Rewind Movie Podcast pays our respects to the Beard, as we embark on a rewatch series of some of the highlights and lesser-travelled avenues of the career of arguably the most successful director in the history of the medium - Steven Spielberg.

Our starting point (having already lavished our praise on Jaws) is his self-penned, emotionally-charged, 1977 alien visitation blockbuster drama Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The freshly-minted star director utilised all of his newfound influence to bring a bombastic, visually resplendent, and grandly-scored vision of the after effects of a blue-collar suburban dad seeing a series of UFOs in the skies over Indiana.

Not yet 30, Spielberg mined his formative years for the film, loosely adapting an amateur 16mm feature he made as a 17-year-old, and investing this tale of a dissolving marriage with the messy verisimilitude of a young man still processing his own parents’ estrangement.

This…is a revolution of the mind. We’re screaming for tech support with Cameron Crowe’s 2001 mind-bendy romantic thriller Vanilla Sky.

Somewhat-aging playboy rich kid David Aames, Jr. (Tom Cruise) skates by as the nominal figurehead of his late father’s publishing house, barely working, lounging in his sprawling penthouse with his casual friend-with-benefits, aspiring actress Julie GIanni (Cameron Diaz), and palling around with novelist friend Brian (Jason Lee). But he finds himself lovestruck after a brief encounter with beautiful, mysterious Spanish guest Sofia (Penélope Cruz) at his birthday party - a liaison cut short when a jealous Julie decides that if she can’t have him, no one can.

Crowe was coming off a hot streak - widely beloved romantic megahit Jerry Maguire pairing him with the super powerful Cruise, and OSCAR-winning passion project Almost Famous confirming him as a filmmaker who had the power to get the greenlight for whatever he might want to turn his hand to. That hand was turned to a big bucks remake of twisty Spanish thriller Abres los Ojos, that beefed up the visual trickery and injected a huge dose of Crowe’s pop culture fixations to boot.
