Morgan was coming up on a meeting with Tarelton in South Carolina. With his back to the Broad River, Morgan knew a retreat across the river could be disasterous. ALso, if he retreated he would very well lose his militia, but he was afraid of the militia possibly panicking again as had occurred at Camden. When he solved this problem at Cowpens it would turn out to be the best fought battle the Patriots ever fought. Greene would try these same tactics again twice in different battles but never with the same degree of success.
