Minnesota Duluth forward Gabbie Hughes and her father, Terry, a former MSU-Mankato defensemen, have both earned All-America status in their hockey careers. Gabbie was a top three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award and a top five finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award last season. The father-daughter duo has become heavily involved in helping players with mental health issues through Sophie's Squad, a nonprofit organization established in 2021.

Sophie's Squad is working toward helping athletes with their mental health, mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The organization is having a fundraiser that includes a 5K run/walk and golf event on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Victory Links Golf Course in Lino Lakes, Minn. The golf event is sold out, but there will be a silent auction and people can still register for the 5K or volunteer. To learn more, visit https://sophiessquad.org/.

Eric Rud has been a hockey coach since 1999, but he will get an opportunity to do something brand new this fall. Rud will be coaching one of his children. He was named the head coach of the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede on Aug. 18, replacing Rob Rassey, who was named an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. Rud will take over a Stampede team that includes his son, Max, an 18-year-old defenseman. The Stampede have won the USHL's Clark Cup as playoff champions three times and are one of the top draws in the league, but have struggled the last two seasons. Rud talks about the challenges of his new job, describes the differences between college and junior hockey coaching and shares some SCSU memories on this episode of the Huskies Hockey Insider podcast with The Rink Live's Mick Hatten.

Mikey Eyssimont was one of 12 former St. Cloud State men's hockey players to play in the NHL last season. Eyssimont made his NHL debut for the Winnipeg Jets on April 11, 2022, in Montreal during his fourth full season of pro hockey. In June, Tracy Dill retired after spending nine years as the director of athletics for Bemidji State. Then on July 5, he was named interim commissioner for the WCHA women's hockey conference. Dill discusses his career in athletics, which began by playing football at William Penn, then working as an assistant football coach and track and field coach and then in administration at St. Cloud State before taking the job at BSU. Brett Barta has been an assistant boys hockey coach since 2012 for Andover High School. Last season, the Huskies won the Class AA state title, something he was not able to accomplish despite two championship game appearances when he was a player for Moorhead High School. Barta is a middle school teacher in Andover and he discusses his career as a coach, player and teacher.
