Minnesota Duluth forward Gabbie Hughes and her father, Terry, a former MSU-Mankato defensemen, have both earned All-America status in their hockey careers. Gabbie was a top three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award and a top five finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award last season. The father-daughter duo has become heavily involved in helping players with mental health issues through Sophie's Squad, a nonprofit organization established in 2021.

Sophie's Squad is working toward helping athletes with their mental health, mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The organization is having a fundraiser that includes a 5K run/walk and golf event on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Victory Links Golf Course in Lino Lakes, Minn. Eric Rud has been a hockey coach since 1999, but he will get an opportunity to do something brand new this fall. Rud will be coaching one of his children. He was named the head coach of the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede on Aug. 18, replacing Rob Rassey, who was named an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. Rud will take over a Stampede team that includes his son, Max, an 18-year-old defenseman. The Stampede have won the USHL's Clark Cup as playoff champions three times and are one of the top draws in the league, but have struggled the last two seasons.
