  • Discomfort often means you're on the right track

Change isn't always fun, easy, or straightforward.

    There's uncertainty, risk, and resistance.

Progress, or even getting started, can be quite uncomfortable.

Yet, that discomfort might be useful.

Discomfort often means you're on the right track.

It may mean you recognize what’s at stake.

    It may reflect growth.

It may indicate you’re doing something that matters.

This isn’t always the case, of course.

Sometimes, discomfort is out of our hands.

There’s very little in life, after all, that we control.

    Yet, we control ourselves.

When we find ourselves facing discomfort, willing to endure it to move toward a better life, it just might mean it’ll be worth it.

    What discomfort are you avoiding?

    Quitting a habit?

    Breaking off a relationship?

Making a change to how you eat?

    Pushing through a workout?

    Enrolling in a class?

    These can all be uncomfortable.

    Lean into that discomfort.

    You’ve got this.

  • No meal "undoes" any other meal

You might beat yourself up after a meal that's not aligned with your goals.

You might feel like you've totally undone all your progress, like all preceding meals were wasted.

They're still steps forward you've taken.

    Nothing can change that.

No meal "undoes" any other meal.

Sure, deviations from your habits set you back.

    They might delay your progress.

It’s what you do consistently, though, that matters most.

One meal will not make or break your efforts.

It’s not dependent on or affected by any others.

There are no streaks to break.

It’s not a reflection of your value or character.

There is no contest or competition in which to cheat.

    It’s you and your food.

If a meal moves you forward, awesome.

    If not, that’s fine, too.

It’s food and you ate it.

The reasons why will change from time to time.

    You’re human.

You’ll have competing wants and desires.

You’ll want to get fit and healthy.

You’ll also want to eat in ways that don’t promote that.

Those statements can be true at the same time.

It might take work to reconcile the two, but you’re worth that work.

The only meal you can ever control is the one you’re eating.

    Make this next meal awesome.

    Do it because you’re awesome.

    You’ve got this.

  • Your health efforts are for you

No one cares how your jeans fit, how much you weigh, or how much you can bench.

They may care how these things affect your quality of life or happiness.

They don't, however, care about these things directly.

You have so much more to offer.

Your health efforts are for you.

Of course, some might judge you.

Some might assess your worth by your physical health.

Those opinions aren’t worthy of your consideration.

They reflect a lack of understanding of worth.

You’ll never impress enough people to be happy with yourself.

That happiness should be the goal of your efforts.

Aim to live the most awesome life possible.

Use your health to keep your body in condition to live that life.

That life might include serving others.

You might see physical health as a tool toward that end.

Yet, that’s because it’s what you want.

It’s not about some standard of beauty, health, or strength.

It’s about waking up, each day, pumped to get after it.

If you want to change your shape, do it.

If you want to lose weight, do it.

If you want to get jacked, do it.

    Do it for you.

    You’ve got this.

  • It's the work that you'll remember

Reaching the goal lasts for only a moment.

Working toward the goal lasts months, years, or even decades.

Consider how you'll feel if you never reach the goal.

Ask yourself if all the work will still be worth it.

It's the work that you'll remember.

So often, we look only at the outcome we desire.

We completely ignore all the time and effort spent pursuing it.

Then, succeed or fail, we realize it wasn’t worth it.

We look back and see how miserable we were.

We think of all the other things we could have been doing.

We feel we’ve wasted that time and effort.

Of course, the outcome may matter.

It’s not the only thing that matters, though.

    There’s always a tradeoff.

You only have so much time and energy.

Dedicating them to one thing means withholding them from infinite alternatives.

Put them toward what you see as the worthiest of efforts.

That might mean efforts so important that they’re worth pursuing even if you fail.

It might mean efforts that simply put a smile on your face.

Find out what it means to you.

    Then, do that work.

    You’ve got this.

  • There is no perfect plan

    You could keep planning.

Waiting on everything to be right.

Delaying action until you've got every detail covered.

    It won't happen.

There will always be more details, considerations, and unforeseen issues to address.

    Start with what you've got.

    There is no perfect plan.

    You’ll screw things up.

    You’ll make mistakes.

    You’ll fail.

    That’s all totally fine.

    You can learn.

    You can grow.

    You can try again.

You might learn to love the challenge.

    Eager for obstacles.

    Appreciating the process of mastery.

Of course, planning has its value.

Yet, it’s far too easy to use it as an excuse.

Don’t let your life pass you by, planning for it.

Get out there and live it.

    Apply for the job.

    Speak to the crush.

    Start the new exercise program.

Whatever it is, you won’t do it perfectly.

You won’t have it all planned out.

    Do it anyway.

  • Focus on what you're doing, not what others are doing

You can look to others for ideas, inspiration, and guidance.

Don't look to them as a standard for success.

    They're not you.

They don't have your history, strengths, weaknesses, or goals.

Your standard for success is you.

Focus on what you're doing, not what others are doing.

    Look to what you want.

Determine what you’ve got to do to get there.

    Then, do the work.

You might want to see how others are doing it.

There may be value in seeking help.

The work, though, is yours and yours alone.

    As are the results.

    You might surpass others.

You might fall short of others.

How do you stack up against yourself?

    Did you make progress today?

Did you get a little bit stronger?

    Eat a little bit better?

    Sleep a little longer?

    Work a little bit harder?

    Not compared to somebody else.

    Compared to yourself.

    That’s your standard.

    Keep showing up.

    Keep putting in the work.

    You are worthy.

    You’ve got this.
