That is right, America will go to the ends of the earth to find and hold accountable those who attack us, no matter how long it takes. Yemen is back in the news these days because thanks to President Trump’s bold decision, we are once again, holding terrorists in Yemen accountable for not only attacking American Naval forces, but even civilian commercial shipping in the international waters of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. In this 25th year of the attack that happened there against the USS Cole, killing 17 Americans, it is important for us to not just commemorate the anniversary, but remind ourselves why these men and women sacrificed so much for us, giving up their lives, and who they were. We also need to remember the heroism and courage of the crew and how they responded, saving the ship so that it could eventually be returned to service, their actions were nothing less than miraculous! Finally, we want to keep those who survived and the families, especially because accountability is not yet complete against all the planners and attackers on the Cole that day, in our prayers. My guest today to help us remember is retired US Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Paul Abney. Chief Abney enlisted in the Navy at age 19 and rose quickly through the ranks as a Surface Sonar Technician and was a Master Chief on the USS Cole that day in October 2000 when it was attacked by terrorists.

Payment in Iron, that is the title of the only US Navy art that hangs in my office. It depicts the USS Constitution leading the American response on pirates in payment for their attacks on US commercial shipping in Africa during the Jefferson administration. The United States has always defended ourselves at sea and our Navy continues that tradition today as it attacks the Houthi pirates in Yemen for their disruption of international shipping lanes. Thanks to the Trump Administration the Houthis are once again designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, following their hundreds of attacks against commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Note they don’t attack Chinese shipping but have conducted over 300 attacks against the US Navy and other commercial ships. A lot of questions remain unanswered, however. Iran has been provided targeting intelligence and command and control ships for the Houthi anti-shipping operation, but will we stop them now? Will we continue to spread our Navy thin in the Indo-Pacific or will we eventually choose to use civilian contractors to take the Houthis down, as is authorized in the constitution? Strategically, can we address our weak shipbuilding capabilities and get back on track to overtake our main adversary’s capability that is hundreds of times more productive than u=ours and our allies combined? We’re going to revisit the missing children issue as many times as it takes and for as long as it takes, until they are all found. I’m not naïve, some of these kids are dead but we must find them. Some of these kids are being actively used in child sex rings, and we must find them. Some of these kids are being used in forced labor, and we must find them. And some of these children are simply at locations and with people unknown because our government failed them and failed them intentionally. All of this has resulted in a dramatic decrease in illegal crossings and is expected to stop the flow of deadly drugs like fentanyl into the country.
