After witnessing the abysmal institutional senior leadership along political, diplomatic, and military lines, I’m convinced that when it comes to the challenges this country, your community, and your family are facing, nobody’s coming. It’s just us. Bottom - up leadership is needed more than ever to create an upswing of social capital in this time of shadow tribalism. The good news is, this seems to be already underway. Give this podcast a listen, and share with other leaders who are stepping into the arena and leading where our institutions are failing. This isn’t a Democrat or Republican thing…this is an “American thing”. It’s just us. But, I’ll take those odds all day long!

On the 2-year anniversary of the horrific Abbey Gate Bombing, I am honored to have Army Paratrooper Aidan Gunderson and US Marine Joe Laude, join me for a no-holds-barred discussion on what it was like to stand post at HKIA, in the final hours of the Afghanistan withdrawal. You don’t want to miss this one.

The Maui wildfires have brought unprecedented death and destruction. Quiet communities who have deep connections to Mother Earth have witnessed the horrors of wildfire and are struggling to emerge from the ashes. But, the resilience of these communities runs deep. Local community leaders self-organized rapidly and started recovery efforts with only basic supplies and have been grinding non-stop for days. If we learned anything from the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, it’s that volunteer groups can rally around a crisis and bring strategic relevance to local leaders. And pre-existing networks can illuminate local issues from the crisis area that warrant international attention. That’s exactly what is needed here. In this short podcast, I interview brothers Zane and Matty Schweitzer who are leading the charge at the local level and you don’t want to miss the perspective they offer. Recommend sharing this podcast with any Government Representatives on Maui to just broaden the perspective to include local context. If you care about what’s happening in Maui, please listen to this special edition of Rooftop and please share it widely. Let’s support Task Force Lahaina.
How do you lead when it seems like everyone is so divided? In this time Churn, people are allowing their fear-based and anger-based behavior to divide them into primal groups. These groups are focused on advancing their own limited agenda and merely surviving instead of thriving. To do that, groups have to bridge into other groups to collaborate and play a bigger game. Whether you are navigating a merger at your company or just trying to bring your community together in a rough political climate, the ability to bridge is essential to the Rooftop Leader. Give this waterline article a listen and start integrate the power of BRIDGING in your life and business!
CONTEXT ON THIS SERIES
In 1917, T.E. Lawrence, who you might know as Lawrence of Arabia overthrew the Ottoman Turks in WWI in modern-day Iraq and Syria, using strategic human connections at the local level. He did so by going into tribal environments and creating a level of trust that unified various tribes around one thing that they could all agree on through storytelling of ‘what could be.’ He wanted to help others who followed behind him do the same so he wrote The 27 Articles to share with them.
Scott has taken these Lawrencian skills and adapted them to the Rooftop Leadership methodology and in this series will share the 27 Waterline Articles for the Rooftop Leader with you so that you are better equipped to lead through the disengagement, distrust, and distraction brought on by prolonged isolation, low trust, and uncertainty. If you’ll lean into these and integrate them into your life and business, you will be more attuned to the people you lead and be able to look at human behavior in a new way that allows you to lead at a higher level.

We talk a lot about trust these days, but most folks are so caught up in the Churn that they are leaving tons of social capital on the table. Why? Because they try to build trust when it’s too late. They try to build trust after the pandemic starts, or once the recession is underway. Rooftop Leaders know that the way to build trust is the opposite of what modern society does. Give this episode a listen and dial in your trust building skills like never before, so that they are there when you need them the most.

How do you prepare for a big negotiation with a tough client? How do you get ready to give the speech of your life to an audience you know nothing about? How do you get ready for a sales call with a prickly prospect? Third Parties can be a real game changer in how you own a room and influence a situation. Sometimes, you may not need to be there at all. The power of third parties in navigating the human terrain is a lesson Green Berets learned time and again. But, they can play a big role in your arena of life and business. Give this episode a listen and learn how to tap into this unconventional influence approach.

Have you noticed a change in how people are treating each other? How are we doing on trust these days? Do you see a change in how people engage each other over politics? How do we treat each other on social media?
If the answer to any of these questions is negative in nature, you’ve likely witnessed a new phenomenon emerging in our civil society that I call the Churn.
It’s the greatest threat we face and if we don’t defeat it, it’s going to take us down.
Nobody else is coming.
Give this episode a listen and join the Rooftop Movement to lead through the Churn.
I'll see you on the Rooftop...
