Anytime there's somebody that's losing me, that can't stay focused for more than three seconds, I say, "Squirrel!"

That's kind of the thing that we use these days to illustrate somebody who can't stay focused, and I believe that is permeating our culture.

Humans are severely distracted, and again, if you can't make a human connection as a leader today, then you're pretty irrelevant. You are in an overcrowded marketplace, everybody's just yelling at everybody. Everybody's trying to over index, over rely on their product or their service or the selfie or whatever, and we can't watch that. We can't connect with that.

What we need is authenticity, transparency, good, solid story-telling, active listening, those interpersonal skills that are timeless.

As you think about leadership today in your organization, in your household, in your community, do you see lots of motivation? Do you see lots of engagement? Do you see a lot of collective energy, or do you see evidence of apathy, disengagement, disconnection?

Our theme this month is the challenge of human connection, understanding your arena and that no one wins alone, and if you want to accomplish things bigger than yourself, if you want to leave deep tracks in this world, you've got to be good at human connections. You've got to be great at human connections. The most relevant person in the room, which is the person we're going to follow, is the person who can make the best human connections.

So join me by the campfire in Old Florida as we learn that without those connections, a sense of purpose and leadership… there is no “Rocket Fuel” to make those “Moon Landings”.

Community trust, the ability to trust your neighbor, is going down.

This is not a doom and gloom thing. I mean, we've actually been here before. Trust can be restored. I saw trust restored in some of the most trust-depleted villages on the planet in southern and eastern Afghanistan by brave Special Ops leaders and others who went in there to help people believe in themselves at a community level.

Trust is social capital and that capital can be restored. But to do that, you've got to be serious about your leadership and I just need you to know that if you're trying to launch a new product, if you're trying to enter into a new realm, or get people to buy into your vision at your company, the baseline of trust has most certainly changed.

So when’s the last time you thought about revenge?

In modern society, in daily life, things like thoughts of ‘revenge’ show up that have been around for a hundred thousand years.

Things like when you think that your resources might be in scarcity, you kind of change. You get kind of squirrely. When you think your job might be in jeopardy, you get kind of squirrely. If you see that one company acquires another company, you have these ‘in groups and out groups’ that compete for honor and status. Yes, if somebody does you wrong at work, the first thing you think just might be…revenge.

Revenge. It’s still around. It’s still there today. The point in all this is that we are ‘Well-dressed Neanderthals’ in many ways. We’ve evolved a lot socially in our culture. We think that we’re above and beyond all of that kind of primal behavior. But the fact of the matter is, we’re still at our core, just as primal as we were 250,000 years ago on the continent of Africa.

Let’s take a minute at the campfire in ‘Old Florida’ and discuss our interactions with and as…’Well Dressed Neanderthals’.

Two core questions that every human asks themselves at night when everyone else is asleep, who am I? And why am I here?

These are questions that we are seeking answers to our entire life. And I don't know that we ever truly find the answer but we can get more clear each time we try. Why would you do that? Why would you go through all of this? Because frankly we're busy, it's hard, it's not necessarily a pleasant thing. So...why?

Well, here's why. People are drawn to clarity. People buy clarity. People invest in clarity. People follow clarity.

So if you want to move your associates to action and following your vision in your company, if you want to inspire potential donors to write a check to your nonprofit and if you want to sell that new product online you've got to be crystal clear about who you are and why you're here.

Get clear on your personal ethos, get clear on your life, and I'll see you on the rooftop.

This is what professionals do.

Amateurs don’t do this. Amateurs just succumb to resistance over and over again. Pros recognize that they have to fight the battle anew every day, that they’re going to have to face resistance every day, and that they need countermoves that they can go to, that will help them do their work.

My dad, Rex Mann has always said, "Leave your tracks in this world." He described tracks as those indelible impressions that we leave in the Earth that serve, not those around us necessarily, as much as they serve those who follow you.

"Whatever, man."

How many times have you heard that word, "whatever?" I hear it all the time in just day to day life when I'm interacting with people on the road or on calls. I hear this word, "whatever."

I hate the word because it embodies, really, the theme for this week which is indifference. Steven Pressfield says that the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.

Now, we've talked about other enemies, we've talked about the erosion of trust, we've talked about distraction through the Guppy Effect.

Enemies in this sense, are the enemies that stand between you and the tracks you want to leave in this world and the goals as a Rooftop Leader that you want to fulfill on that will help people and inspire people to take action to do bigger things because they want to, not because they have to.

That enemy.

I believe resistance is the greatest enemy you will ever face in achieving an impact bigger than yourself and playing a bigger game as a Rooftop Leader.

Resistance in it's simplest form, is self sabotage. Join me for this week's video where we discuss resistance and the tools we need to beat it.

This is a movement to lead at a stronger level and overcoming resistance is key to it.
