  • Roy Green Show Podcast November 17: The Taylor Swift experience continues in Canada, the 111th Grey Cup kicks off in Vancouver, eating a Christmas meal with crickets and dealing with a mass migrant crossing from the U.S.

    Today’s podcast:

The Taylor Swift experience continues in Canada. Yesterday a listener texted he or she had 2 tickets for a Toronto concert for sale at $8500. They sold within half an hour (we were not involved).

Guest: Alan Cross. Host of The Ongoing History of New Music and the podcast Uncharted - Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry. Also on ajournalofmusicalthings.com

The 111th Grey Cup will be played today when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers make their fifth consecutive appearance in the national championship and the Toronto Argonauts are forced to play their backup quarterback. This is the eighth time the Blue Bombers and Argonauts have met in the Grey Cup, with Toronto winning all seven previous games.

    Guests:

    • Greg Mackling. Co-host of The Start on 680 CJOB Winnipeg and a Blue Bombers broadcast crew member.
    • Ron Foxcroft. Inventor of the FOX 40 whistle (used by all sports officials in the CFL, NFL, NBA, NCAA, NHL and the FIFA World Cup).

    • Instead of a Christmas turkey, how would you feel about a Christmas meal featuring crickets? The effort to convert Canadians to insect consumption is underway and not being well-received.

Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois. Director of the Dalhousie University Agri Foods lab. His current op-ed in the Toronto Sun: Why Canadians aren't ready to trade steak for crickets

The immigration issue continues to make headlines with the U.S. preparing to remove 11 million undocumented migrants and Tom Homan, the new U.S. border Czar, indicates criminal gangs will be the first focus. Where might such gangs and members head for? Canada? How prepared is this country for any mass migrant crossing from the U.S.? What laws do we have to intercept and remove anyone on a criminal wanted list internationally?

As well, the trial of two individuals charged with human trafficking begins tomorrow. They are charged in the deaths of an Indian family who froze to death in northern Minnesota in 2022 while attempting to cross into the United States illegally.

Guest: Richard Kurland. Immigration lawyer in Vancouver.

      • Roy Green Show Podcast November 16: How Trump's return affects Canadians, Taylor Swift's presence in Toronto costs taxpayers, Paul Bernardo's appears before parole board and a letter from a legendary broadcaster

        Today’s podcast:

Today, some 11 days since Americans voted to return Donald Trump to the White House by a significant majority in what was expected to be a very close election, the president-elect's named cabinet officers list is generating both praise, scorn, and open concern, might we Canadians, exactly 1 year from today be dealing very recent and much unexpected federal election results of our own and what might such an unexpected federal election result have us facing?

Meanwhile, former Liberal Deputy PM John Manley is advising a snap federal election now with a new Canadian federal government in place in time for Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. President and able to challenge any Trump admin decisions potentially harmful to this country.

Guest: Darrell Bricker. CEO. IPSOS Public Affairs

There's no question that Taylor Swift is a music royalty and perhaps the single most successful music act ever (Bigger than the Beatles? Bigger than Elvis?) In Toronto, Swift is treated as royalty and a motorcade rivals what King Charles might experience. And who pays for this? And is it all necessary? Meanwhile, Swift's presence in Toronto adds some $282 million to the city's economy.

While Taylor Swift still has concerts to perform in Toronto, she will then be in Vancouver from December 6 to 8, with the VPD preparing to add 700 officers to its rotation during the Tay Tay concerts. But about the bar set by Toronto.

Guest: Joe Warmington. Columnist with The Toronto Sun.

In ten days Paul Bernardo, convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer of teenagers Kristen French, Leslie Mahaffy and Tammy Homolka will again appear before the Parole Board seeking release from prison. Earlier this year Kristen's father Doug French died at age 92. Bernardo will again sit in the same room as the parents/families of his victims making his case for freedom. Meanwhile, if Bernardo were to be released into the general population of a Canadian federal prison his life expectancy would be brief.

Guest: Tim Danson. Lawyer for the French and Mahaffy families since the beginning of their tragedy.

A listener emailed a piece written by legendary American broadcaster Paul Harvey penned for his grandchildren. In the letter, Harvey writes of his wishes for his grandchildren which we're wondering if listeners will find on the mark, or advice past its best-before date in 2024. We've heard both views from people asked to read the piece.

Guest: Roy reads Paul Harvey's letter to his grandson

      • Nov. 16: How Donald Trump's economic policy affects Canadians

Opinions on the impact of Donald Trump in the White House setting economic policy for the U.S. and economic policy that will immediately and directly affect Canada. Will Trump's policies, including his love of tariffs, bring economic success to the United States and spill over into Canada? Or will Trump's economic policies result in something slightly short of economic armageddon (as one pundit wrote)?

Does our guest support former Deputy PM John Manley's call for a snap federal election now and a new and in-place federal Canadian government before Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the United States?

Guest: Professor Eric Kam. Macroeconomics at Toronto Metropolitan University.
