Joe’s musical journey has taken him through some very different corners of the music world. As the bassist for MyChildren MyBride, he was part of the band’s rise through the Christian metalcore scene, joining the group during its early years with Tooth & Nail Records and Solid State Records. From the heavy, aggressive sounds of albums like Unbreakable and Lost Boy to the band’s self-titled release, Joe experienced the realities of touring, recording, and being part of a band making its mark on the heavy music scene.

After leaving MyChildren MyBride, Joe began exploring a different musical direction with The Woodsman’s Babe, trading crushing breakdowns for more melodic, atmospheric, and introspective songwriting. His creative journey continued with Henry Joseph, a project exploring a country-inspired sound rooted in the music he grew up listening to. These projects reveal a musician who isn't content to stay in one lane, constantly looking for new ways to express himself through music.

On this episode of The Rumors Are True, Jeremy sits down with Dan Castady, Aaron Green, and Mark Rhoades from The Fold for a trip back to the early and mid-2000s Chicago music scene and the story of one of the bands that became an important part of the Tooth & Nail Records family.

The Fold came together in Chicago in the early 2000s, growing out of the members' experiences in other bands and the local scene. Dan Castady, Aaron Green, Keith Mochel, and Mark Rhoades eventually formed the lineup that would take The Fold to Tooth & Nail Records. The band signed with the label in 2005 after years of sending demos and building a following through relentless touring.

We talk about the early days of The Fold, how the band came together, their connections to Showoff and other Chicago bands, and what it was like trying to find their own identity while coming out of an already established music scene. Dan, Aaron, and Mark share stories from those early years, the process of writing and recording, and the journey that eventually landed them on Tooth & Nail.

The conversation also dives deep into This Too Shall Pass, The Fold's 2006 Tooth & Nail debut. Produced with the goal of capturing the band's melodic, energetic sound, the record helped introduce The Fold to a much larger audience and put them alongside a growing roster of Tooth & Nail artists.

We also get into Secrets Keep You Sick, the band's 2007 follow-up, and the more personal direction of the record. Dan has previously described that album as a much more open and unfiltered look at what was happening in his life at the time. Songs such as “Faster Still” and “Revisited” dealt with the loss of Dan's cousin Andrew, while other songs explored family, relationships, faith, and the struggles of trying to move forward.

And of course, there's plenty of discussion about the Tooth & Nail Records years — signing to the label, recording records, touring, playing shows with bands like Anberlin, Project 86, Sherwood and others, the legendary Tooth & Nail touring circuit, and what it was like being part of that particular scene at a time when independent Christian music was reaching a much larger audience. The Fold's sound drew from the worlds of pop-punk, indie rock, emo, and alternative rock, with influences including bands like Far and Saves the Day.

Jeremy, Dan, Aaron, and Mark look back at the records, the tours, the friendships, the lineup, the changes, and the stories that happened behind the scenes. It's a conversation about The Fold before Tooth & Nail, The Fold during Tooth & Nail, and everything that came after — told by three people who were there.

On this episode of The Rumors Are True, Jeremy sits down with JJ Miller and Rob Brown from the mysterious Australian band Sal Paradise for a conversation about one of the more intriguing and overlooked stories in the history of Tooth & Nail Records.

If you were digging through the Tooth & Nail catalog in the mid-'90s, Sal Paradise was a band that seemed to come out of nowhere. An Australian band surrounded by the very American world of Tooth & Nail, they didn't exactly fit the mold of what many people expected from the label. Their music was atmospheric, melodic, hazy, and beautifully rough around the edges — a strange and compelling combination of indie rock, alternative pop, lo-fi textures, and spiritual songwriting. Contemporary reviews of Further highlighted its Australian origins, gentle guitar-driven sound, and the record's recurring themes of driving, searching, faith, and discovery.

At the center of that story is Further, the mysterious Tooth & Nail record that became Sal Paradise's American introduction. Released by Tooth & Nail in 1996, the album featured songs like “Road Movie #57,” “Sideways,” “Celestial Railway,” “Lost Maps,” “Vicarious Speedster,” “Perfect Lead,” and “Solomon's Fix.” The record has become one of those fascinating pieces of the Tooth & Nail catalog that longtime fans remember, while many newer listeners may have never heard it.

And there is even more to the story. Sal Paradise's history goes back to the Australian band Crux, with sources documenting the band's evolution and the eventual move toward the Sal Paradise name. Further was their first U.S. release, but it wasn't the end of the story. Years later, JJ Miller returned with For You and Before You on Velvet Blue Music, revisiting songs from the band's earlier records in a much more stripped-down and acoustic setting.

So what actually happened behind the scenes? How did an Australian indie band end up on Tooth & Nail? What was it like being part of that strange and creative mid-'90s label roster alongside bands like Starflyer 59, Joe Christmas, Morella's Forest, Plankeye, Roadside Monument, Luxury, and so many others? What was the story behind Further, the recording of the album, the band's lineup changes, and the mysterious journey that brought Sal Paradise to American audiences?
