  • Sam Allardyce: Part 2 of 2 - The truth behind the dream that turned into a nightmare
Sam Allardyce, one of the biggest names in football, is a football manager and former player having most recently managed Everton in the Premier League last season. Sam played at a number of clubs as a defender, with his longest spell at Bolton, who he went on to manage with great success for 8 years from 1999, taking them into the Premier League in 2001 as well as into the League Cup Final and Europe. In 2016, following spells at Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham and Sunderland, Sam was given his ‘dream job’ as manager of the English national team in July 2016. His role as national team manager was cut short after an undercover Daily Telegraph sting was deemed to have inferred corruption around third part ownership of players. A legal claim for substantial damages is in progress. ‘Big Sam’ continues to be regarded as one of the most established and recognisable personalities in the English game.
In this second, explosive, part to the interview, Sam goes into depth about his time as England manager. He tells Sandro about how this ‘dream job’ became a nightmare, how he was guilty until proven innocent by the Football Association and how he ‘wished he never apologised’. Sam expresses his anger about the press, the Independent Press Standards Organisation and how the standards of the press have become a sham.

In this, the first part of a two-podcast interview with Sam, tells Sandro about his ‘disciplined and good’ upbringing, how discipline was important in his playing days, but how that has changed in the game today. He talks about what he feels is crucial, as a manager, in order to get the most out of players. Sam also talks about how he is ‘unfairly’ labelled as a long ball manager and why that is simply not true.

  • Nhamo Shire: Talent Determination and Sanctuary
Nhamo Shire is known as London’s ‘Mr basketball’ and this year he set up the London City Royals basketball team. Shire had a tough start in life, living alone in a bedsit in London at the age of 14 which could have seen him easily fall into a life of drugs and crime, but when he discovered basketball he put all his focus into the sport. A few years later he broke his ankle and was told he’d be lucky to run for a bus again. The basketball had given his life so much purpose, so this left him at a loss as to what to do. His steely determination saw him fight his way back onto the court, but that wasn’t the last of the big knock-backs in his life – he reconnected with the father he never knew in Zimbabwe, but he passed away soon after; basketball continued to give him the focus he needed to stop his life from crumbling.
Nhamo talks to Sandro about how the basketball court was his sanctuary at these difficult points in his life and about how he set up a ‘Midnight Madness’, a late-night social group to help vulnerable youngsters from similar backgrounds as his, which brings them together to play basketball and help give their lives focus.
