Professor John Smol from the Department of Biology at Queen’s University and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change joins us in this segment.  Smol has observed that there were “two very different directions for the environment [that were]  contested with the US elections. The outcome will not only affect local environmental issues, but also the largest global problem facing humanity today — climate change. Meghan McInnis, PhD Candidate in the Department of Psychology joins us for this episode of The Scoop to talk about disparities in access to cancer screening, treatment, and support for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2+), and the web and social media resources available through the Queering Cancer website to remediate these disparities.  

Pamela Dickey Young, Professor in the School of Religion at Queen’s University joins us for this segment.  Young discusses Pope Francis’ watershed endorsement on same-sex civil unions, an endorsement that emerged on October 21 2020 in the debut of Evgeny Afineevsky’s documentary Francesco at the Rome Film Festival. Young fills in details about official teachings of the Catholic Church related to same same sex unions, the views of more conservative Catholics, and how the endorsement is a huge step forward for LGBTQI+ Catholics, but still falls short of official recognition of the diversity of loving relationships within the Catholic Church.

Professor David Skillicorn, Professor in the School of Computing at Queen’s University joins us in this segment.  Dr. Skillicorn discusses the province’s announcement on Tuesday October 20th that it will launch a new  ‘digital wallet’ plan to move provincial identifications and services onto  a cellular virtual platform.  He highlights anticipated issues as 25% of Canadian do not have cell phones and underscores ‘smart cards’ as a viable alternative.
