Scroll editor Jacob Siegel speaks with the Egyptian-American writer Hussein Aboubakr Mansour about the strange career of the strident anti-zionist turned senior US diplomat, Robert Malley. Once the lead US negotiator with Iran under both the Obama and Biden White Houses, Malley was suspended from his government post in June of this year shortly before a blockbuster investigation revealed his close connections to an Iranian influence operation that penetrated the U.S. national security establishment.

In their conversation, Siegel and Mansour discuss Malley’s intellectual formation and his role in translating anti-Zionist ideology into a more “respectable” liberal idiom that has made it increasingly influential inside the American ruling class.
