  • Episode 105: Spooky Canon Month II (THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, 1999)

"Woke up this morning, just like two seconds ago, and there are piles of rocks outside of our tent."

Curtis, Simon, and special guest Dr Thomas (Tommy) Britt continue spooky canon month with the latest entry: 1999's THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. The boys discuss the lore, their favourite scary moments, various theories, the film's background and legacy, found footage supernatural horror, living near the filming location, and more. They also talk about CURSE OF THE BLAIR WITCH and THE BURKITTSVILLE 7, two mockumentaries made alongside THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT as part of the film's marketing campaign, and the real-life horror surrounding THE REAL BLAIR WITCH (2003).

Tune in next week for GINGER SNAPS (2000), a Canadian cult classic about werewolves and puberty!

  • Episode 104: Spooky Canon Month I (THE MONSTER SQUAD, 1987)

Welcome to SPOOKY CANON MONTH, boils and ghouls! This month on the Seat Struck Movie Podcast, we've selected four of our favourites to discuss and ring in the Halloween season. First up is Quinn's choice, the 1987 horror comedy cult classic: THE MONSTER SQUAD. We talked about the first time we watched this film, our favourite scenes, its effectiveness as a kids movie and its love for classic Universal Monster movies, and circled back to some discussion on 50s nostalgia through an 80s lens. Before all that though, we discussed the end of the writers' guild strike and gave a few spooky recommendations.

Next week we will return with special guests to discuss THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

          "Look, Anita! Puppies everywhere!"

For the 101st episode of the Seat Struck Movie Podcast, we kept things topical and discussed 101 DALMATIANS—specifically, the original 1961 Disney classic. We chatted a bit about the context of the film, and how its new animation techniques heralded a new era in Disney. We also quickly went over the plot and some of our favourite moments. Things got a bit sidetracked at the end as we got into a someone lengthy discussion on content censorship. Before all that though, John, Curtis, and Quinn discussed some recent news of the week, which included some quick shout outs of films we are excited to see following the latest festival circuit. Following this, we quickly chatted about some recent films we saw.

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

This week on the podcast, John and Curtis dive in to what is perhaps the career apex of Ridley Scott, his sword and sandals epic and Best Picture winner at the 2001 Oscars—GLADIATOR. This was the first Ridley Scott movie that we remember releasing, so we spent some time discussing our first time watching this movie and how much of an impact it had upon release and on a subsequent generation of blockbusters. We went into the historical reference points and themes of the film, and what we liked about the characters and setting. Before getting to all that, we did a news of the week recap and talked a bit about what we watched last week.
