When we witness to people, we see and hear all sorts of reactions, and questions. Some of them are genuine, from people of good faith. But many questions we hear aren’t looking for an explanation as much as an ‘exit’. That is, they are not a search for truth, but an attempt to ask a ‘gotcha!’ to justify rejecting the message of the gospel.There are a number of ways we can deal with questions, one Paul uses in today’s passage is to quote Scripture. One of the most common criticisms of Christians is that all Christians are hypocrites—people say, in effect, ‘people don’t believe in God, Christian, because of you’.This is exactly what Paul concludes this morning’s text with, he says: “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you” (Romans 2v24).It is SO, SO important that we get to grips with understanding this. We cannot, we must not, live our lives oblivious to the fact that people watch us, that HOW we live our lives as Christians directly impacts the effectiveness of our witness. Many unbelievers are moral, caring people. One of the biggest barriers to Evangelism is fear. Many Christians feel anxiety and fear when they are challenged to witness to people they know. However, it is not usually fear of ridicule or persecution. The fear most regularly expressed to me is fear of not knowing what to say.What exactly IS the gospel? If we are to become messengers of the Gospel, we need to know what it’s all about, we need to be familiar with it, and we need to be constantly reminded of its truth and importance.
