The Self-Led Woman is a podcast about emotional eating, the experiences that shape our relationship with food, and the kind of healing that unfolds when women reconnect with their sense of self.
In this space, we go beneath behaviour, exploring trauma, the nervous system, nourishment, unmet needs, and mental health - with deep respect for the intelligence of the body.
Hosted by Megan Darnell, Internal Family Systems therapy practitioner.
There are things your body does that feel confusing, extreme, or “too much” until you understand what your nervous system has actually been trying to do.
In this episode, we explore why anxiety, shutdown, emotional eating, cravings, people pleasing, collapse, urgency, and overwhelm so often aren’t signs of dysregulation or weakness, but signs of an intelligent system trying to complete something that was never allowed to finish.
We unpack how fight, flight, and freeze responses get interrupted in childhood, how unfinished survival energy gets stored in the body, and why those incomplete processes don’t disappear, they get carried.
Sometimes for decades.
Sometimes across generations.
Through a nervous system and trauma-informed lens, I talk about how food can become a way to contain, soothe, discharge, or bring relief when the system has been holding too much for too long. Not because food is the problem, but because it was available when nothing else was.
This episode also gently speaks into the mother wound, nervous system loyalty, and the ways many women learned to stay pleasant, stay contained, and not need too much, even while their bodies continued to carry unfinished stress responses.
If you’ve ever wondered why “just listening to your body” feels impossible, or why insight alone hasn’t changed these patterns, this conversation will help you understand what your system has been asking for all along.
And if you’re wanting 2026 to look different, not because you’re controlling harder, but because your system finally feels supported my 12 week emotional eating therapy journey Release and Reclaim is now open.

Emotional eating gets talked about like it’s one behaviour with one cause.
It’s not.
In this episode, I break down the different roles food can play in your life and why understanding which role it’s playing matters far more than trying to “fix” your eating.
Because food isn’t always about avoidance or numbing.
Sometimes it’s regulation.
Sometimes it’s comfort.
Sometimes it’s relief.
Sometimes it’s nourishment.
And sometimes it’s just… food.
We explore emotional eating through an Internal Family Systems lens, looking at the different parts that turn to food for different reasons, depending on your nervous system state, your capacity, your history, and what you’re carrying in this season of your life.
You’ll hear why trying to treat all emotional eating the same actually increases food noise, shame, and rebound behaviours, and how real change comes from understanding what job food is doing for you instead of trying to take it away.
This episode is about complexity, compassion, and respect for your system and why nothing about your eating behaviours is random.

If food feels loud for you, it’s not a discipline issue.
And it’s not something wrong with your body.
Food noise increases when your system is under strain.
Too many decisions, too much responsibility, not enough rest, not enough support. When capacity drops, parts of you look for relief wherever they can find it.
In this episode, I unpack food noise through a nervous system and Internal Family Systems lens and talk about why what helps in one season of life can make things worse in another.
We explore:
This episode is about respecting the complexity of your system and learning to work with it, not against it.

For years, I believed my night-time bingeing was a discipline problem.
Something I should be able to control if I just tried harder.
But the truth was far more confronting and far more compassionate.
In this episode, I share the story of the pattern I couldn’t stop.
Waking in the night in full panic. Racing to the kitchen. Eating with a level of urgency that felt completely out of my control.
What finally changed everything wasn’t another strategy, plan, or mindset shift.
It was uncovering the trauma my body had been faithfully remembering and protecting me from for decades.
Through lived experience and an Internal Family Systems lens, this episode explores why bingeing is often not about food at all, but about survival.
About parts of us working desperately to regulate overwhelming fear, panic, and unmet needs.
If you’ve ever felt hijacked by your eating or ashamed of behaviour you couldn’t explain, this episode is for you.

The holidays don’t create emotional eating. They reveal it.
In this episode, we explore why this time of year so often activates old patterns around food, even when your life looks stable on the surface. Through the lens of trauma, the nervous system, and Internal Family Systems, we unpack how the body stores memory and how certain seasons, dates, and environments can reactivate responses learned long ago.
We talk about why your nervous system might feel on edge in December, why family gatherings can stir anxiety or shutdown, and why food often becomes louder when your system doesn’t feel supported. Not because you’re failing, but because your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you.
This episode weaves together clinical insights, real examples from trauma research, and an IFS-informed understanding of protective parts that increase control, collapse into avoidance, or reach for food as a form of regulation. We explore how these patterns repeat until the underlying safety need is met and why awareness alone isn’t enough to resolve them.
This is a conversation about respect for the body’s intelligence, about breaking cycles without blame, and about learning to meet the parts of you that activate during the holidays with curiosity rather than shame.

In this episode, we explore why emotional eating so often shows up in women who are high-functioning, capable, and already doing everything they can to cope.
We look at emotional eating through an Internal Family Systems lens and unpack what’s actually happening in the nervous system when food becomes loud. Not as a lack of discipline, but as a signal that parts of you are working hard to regulate overwhelm, soothe unmet needs, and keep you functioning.
This episode speaks to the comfort-eating parts, the soothing parts, and the protective parts that step in when capacity is low, responsibility is high, rest is scarce, and emotions have nowhere safe to land.
We also explore why food noise changes across different seasons of life, mental health, and nervous system capacity, and why what supported you once may not support you now.
This is not a conversation about control, rules, or fixing behaviour. It’s about understanding why food has been carrying so much weight in your system, and what becomes possible when that burden is finally witnessed with care.

For most of my life, I believed my body was the problem.
Not in a dramatic way. Not in a way I could easily name. Just in the quiet, unquestioned way that sat underneath everything — shaping how I ate, how I moved, how I looked at myself, and how much peace I felt in my own skin.
In this first episode, I share part of my personal story with food, body image, control, and emotional eating. From dieting as a child, to years of restriction and bingeing, to the moment I realised food was never the real issue.
This isn’t a story about willpower or discipline. It’s about how emotional eating can become a strategy for regulation and relief. About what happens when the body learns early that control feels safer than softness. And about what began to shift when I stopped fighting my body and started listening to it.
This episode sets the foundation for the conversations to come, exploring emotional eating, the nervous system, trauma, and the deeper needs that often sit beneath our relationship with food.
If food feels loud or complicated in your life, this is where the conversation begins.
