It's the new year and that typically means resolutions for how things will be different, or better, in the year ahead. But if you find it hard to stick to them (like most people), there's actually a better way!

Instead of resolving to do something new, set a specific goal, and then make a plan that supports that goal. Then, to set yourself up for success even further, adopt new habits to make the plan, and the goal, inevitable.

Running yourself ragged is no good for anyone. We all know it's important to rest but how do we do it when we feel guilty about it? Or when we feel nervous that we will only come back to more work? Modern goal-setting and planning gets a lot wrong. Typically they tell you to set "big scary goals" and then just work really hard. This is a great recipe for burnout. I know because this is how I used to do it...and I burned out! Now the way I set goals for myself and with my clients is to look at the big picture and work backward. This means you get to feel enjoyment and satisfaction every step of the way, and not just when you hit your goals.

A lot of gratitude talk focuses on feel-good fluff, and that can be hard when you just really want to burn everything to the ground. There's a lot of merit in venting to a trusted friend and then sitting with challenging emotions when you're in a difficult season. But after you do that, I suggest you do a simple gratitude practice to get back on track. By focusing on what's going right, it helps your brain start to shift out of the funk. And when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, you'll be motivated to move toward it.

Contrary to what you've been told, there's nothing wrong with tooting your own horn in business. I'm not talking about bro-marketers who set up photoshoots with rented luxury cars in front of AirBnB beach condos in an attempt to appear more successful. I mean there's nothing wrong with saying to your ideal clients, "Hey...I'm actually really good at this! And here's how it can benefit you." It's certainly lovely to get a shout-out from someone online who loves you, or to get an amazing testimonial, but here's why and how you can flaunt your awesomeness without feeling like a "braggy bitch."
