St Augustine of Hippo, once a restless sinner, became the Church’s great Doctor of Grace through his conversion, his mother Monica’s prayers, and St Ambrose’s preaching. As bishop he preserved sound doctrine, defended unity, and humbled himself before God: “Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new.” Today, with St Hermes the martyr, we learn that all—scholar or hidden witness—are called to be salt and light, faithful unto Christ and crowned in glory.
