This chapter contains a collection of laws pertaining to the compensation required when theft is suspected, or confirmed.

This chapter contains a series of ordinances concerning ownership, and accidental deaths and various irresponsibilities of owners.

The first thing God does when he meets the children of Israel is to give them the Ten Commandments. Israel begs Moses to ask God to stop talking fearing death. And so God ceases to speak to Israel and brings Moses up into the mountain to gather his word and bring it to his people.

God descends onto mount Sinai like a smoking furnace. And calls Moses to come up to meet with him on the mountain and charges Moses to warn the people not to touch the mountain lest they die. And to keep their cattle secure, lest they die. The people hear the voice of God thundering from the fire and the smoke and tremble.

Moses' father-in-law meets Moses in the wilderness bringing him his wife and children and hears the story of the Exodus first-hand. Then he observes the burden Moses endured hearing the disputes from the people of Israel and explained the importance of establishing righteous judges to give judgement on small matters to relieve the burden on Moses.

The children of Israel murmur for lack of water and so Moses receives instruction from God to smite a rock to bring forth water for Israel. Amalec came out to war against Israel and so long as Moses raised the staff of God, Joshua and Israel prevailed.

The children of Israel became hungry and murmurred against God who sent them manna and quail to eat to test their obedience and sustain them in the wilderness.

After defeating the Egyptians using the Red Sea, All of Israel sings praise songs and glorifies God for releasing them from bondage and defeating Egypt mightily.

The Egyptians regret letting Israel go and so pursue them to recapture them. Moses leads Israel to the sea and the people fear and complain he led them to their deaths. God commands Moses to lift his staff and part the Red Sea and causes a strong wind to blow and Moses leads the people across on dry land. The Egyptians pursue Israel and when God slows them down they fear for their lives, and before they can retreat Moses raises his hand and God causes the water to wipeout the Egyptians.

Because the angel of death passed over Israel, God claimed their first-born for himself and explained the feast of the passover.
