  • Poco's Rusty Young Interview
One of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups, Poco had their roots in the dying embers of Buffalo Springfield. After Neil Young and Stephen Stills, the co-founders of that group, exited in the spring of 1968, only guitarist/singer Richie Furay and bassist Jim Messina remained to complete the group's swan song, Last Time Around. The final Springfield track, "Kind Woman," included only Furay and Messina, with a guest appearance on steel guitar by Rusty Young -- at the time, he was something of a rarity as a talented lap steel guitarist who was comfortable working in a rock idiom, and had previously belonged to a folk-rock-turned-psychedelic band called Boenzee Cryque. Young stuck with Furay and Messina, in the process skipping a scheduled audition for a new group that ex-Byrds member Gram Parsons was putting together. Auditions followed before the fledgling group reached out, at Young's urging, to ex-Boenzee Cryque drummer/vocalist George Grantham, and also to bassist/singer Randy Meisner, who had previously played with a band called the Poor. This lineup rehearsed for four months before making its debut at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, in November of 1968. A month later, they made their first appearance at the Fillmore West on a bill with the Steve Miller Band and Sly & the Family Stone.

  • Michael Bergen Fall Night Train Run 2017 Interview
In Kansas City, Santa Claus rides a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and many of his elves sport beards and wear Harley t-shirts.
For the past 29 years, Exide assembly operator Michael Bergen has teamed up with his motorcycle-riding friends to ensure that thousands of disadvantaged children in the Kansas City area receive presents and are able to have a Merry Christmas.
Twice a year - in the spring and fall- "Michael Bergen's Night Train Toy Run" of motorcycle riders travels through the Kansas city area, collecting toy donations for the upcoming holiday season. Then, during several nights in November and December, Bergen and has band of bikers set up Santa's workshop in local restaurants for gift-wrapping parties.
Bergen readily admits that a room full of Harley-Davidson riders gift-wrapping dolls and other toys is a strange sight. But by the end of the night, countless restaurant patrons - total strangers - join in to help bring some holiday cheer to local children.
"I started doing this many years ago after the City Union Mission here in Kansas City was robbed just before Christmas," Bergen said. "My friends and I donated some money to help them with Christmas, then six months later we did our first motorcycle run to collect toys and donations."
One year later, Bergen actually donned a Santa costume and helped deliver the gifts to children at a Head Start program in a particular disadvantaged community. "The lady who ran the Head Start program was crying with happiness, but the kids weren't asking for toys - they where asking for a mom and dad." Bergen said.
Bergen has also formed the charitable cause Hands to Heart to increase awareness of the effort to provide gifts to disadvantaged children, With the help of his number -one elf- follower Exide employee Kevin Gardner, who has been an unfailing participant for more than a decade - Bergen expects to deliver 4000 gifts to such groups as the Red Cross, Children's mercy Hospital and local Head Start programs.
For his efforts, Bergen has become a local celebrity and has even been named Man of the year by the local United Way. But as you might expect from someone so generous, Bergen deflects praise that comes his way.
Instead, he is quick to point out that without help from people like Gardner and his other biker-friends, as well as the support of Exide's Kansas City plant, "these kids wouldn't have Christmas. My hat is off to them 100 percent," said Bergen.

  • Fore The Kids Golf Scramble 2017 Interview
Fore the Kids foundation is a proud supporter of Children’s Mercy, raising money to provide services and treatment advances to help bring smiles to children’s faces at a time when they are hard to find…but so incredibly important.
Help us meet our goals for 2017:
Funds benefit the development of an integrated education and treatment program to support the developmental and behavioral sciences division of CMK.
Nick and Jake’s Fore the Kids golf tournament has been a proud supporter of Children’s Mercy, raising over $1.5 million and providing all the “extra’s” of care. Proceeds from the tournament have brought iPads to patient’s bedsides, created and started a pet Therapy program for children with cancer and epilepsy. And teamed with the Automobile Dealers of Greater Kansas City Charitable Foundation, Fore the Kids raised enough money to purchase a brand-new ambulance in 2015 and two new critical care ambulances in 2016.
For years the topic of suicide and depression for school-aged children has been so taboo and terrifying to talk about, but the fact of the matter is, suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States for anyone between the ages of 10-24. More teenagers die from suicide than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.

IN THE WORLD OF PIZZA…Grimaldi’s is an institution.
With over 100 years of coal fired brick-oven pizza-making traditions, we continue to ensure that future generations are able to experience our distinctive and truly authentic pizza.
Why coal-fired brick ovens? The tantalizing aroma of pizza and calzones baked to perfection in our signature coal burning oven offers a unique flavor and a crisp crust that is just not possible from gas, convection, or wood burning ovens.
Our fresh ingredients, handmade mozzarella, ‘secret recipe’ dough and pizza sauce make us the most award-winning pizzeria in the United States.
Grimaldi’s Pizzeria at Prairiefire in South Overland Park is the first to come to the state of Kansas. Our restaurant is located at 135th and Nall; take Route 69 and exit at 135th St. Located next to Fat Brain Toys where children can play while you wait for a takeout or a table. Our restaurant has a full bar and patio where our guests can enjoy the weather (when it permits). The Museum of Prairiefire, Cinetopia movie theatre, Threshing Bee – a woman’s boutique, and Made in KC – Kansas City Novelty store are all nearby. We have free valet parking, and there is a five-floor parking garage directly in the center of our complex and about 50ft from our front door. Come out and enjoy amazing food in a great atmosphere!

  • The Fallen Heroes Ride 2017 Interview
Tragically in October 2015, Kansas City endured the loss of two courageous firemen, Larry Leggio and John Mesh. Like so many, we mourned this devastating loss with a heavy heart. In this darkness, an idea was born to support the local families left behind. With a core group of less than 10 friends, the support of The Bar and only 6 days, the “Fallen Heroes Ride” came to life.
When our Facebook event page went Public we had almost 2,000 shares in 2 days. Donations started pouring in for the auction, the families, and our team was in overdrive! We all could see this ride was taking on a life of it’s own.
On October 25, 2015, the riders began arriving, and they just kept coming. Over 700 motorcycles and 1,300+ people came to show their support. We raised just shy of $40,000 with 100% of it going to the families through Local 42. After the dust had settled, we were truly able to see the miracles that happened over those 6 days. We are forever grateful and thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this happen.
From the beginning, and throughout the process, we were asked to make this an Annual Ride. Without hesitation, we said ABSOLUTELY! Because of the magnitude of this ride, we were introduced to S.A.F.E. which aligns with our purpose and vision for the continued raising of monies to support our Fallen Heroes families and honor their sacrifice.
