Sooners On SI's Ryan Chapman, Carson Field, Ryan Aber and Brady Trantham present episode 380 of the Sooners On SI Podcast.
Just a week after a euphoric win over Texas, the guys dive into what went wrong Saturday night in Norman against the vaunted Kentucky Wildcats. But we're not talking basketball here. UK's trying to grow a respectable football program, and they just took another step by winning their fifth straight contest -- and outplaying blue blood Oklahoma to boot.
The Sooners showed signs of real improvement on offense -- four drives of 10 plays or more; outgained UK by 116 yards on offense -- but also reverted back to some of their old ways, with questionable coaching decisions at just the wrong time and, ultimately, FOUR interceptions, three by John Mateer.
OU's defense was solid except when it had to be. Kentucky was the better team as the Sooners fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in SEC play. At the midway point of the season, OU is all but eliminated from playoff contention and any pipe dream they may have had about the SEC title game.
Can this OU squad even win six games this year and get to a lowly bowl game? Or will Brent Venables' latest iteration of OU football break that streak, too?
The podcast crew — John Hoover, Ryan Chapman, Carson Field and Ryan Aber — returned to put a bow on the Texas win before flipping the page to Kentucky.
Is Oklahoma’s leadership in a better spot than the last time the Sooners knocked off the ‘Horns to prevent a major letdown? And will the OU offense get a boost — both in confidence and with returning personnel — to try and make necessary improvements for the back half of the season?
Then the guys turned their attention to the other side of the ball, where the Sooners’ defense will reunite with some familiar faces in one of the matchups to watch for the weekend.
Oklahoma Sooners On SI's Ryan Chapman, Carson Field, Ryan Aber and Brady Trantham present episode 378 of the Sooners On SI Podcast, a full postgame recap of OU's 27-24 victory over the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns.
The Sooners started with five straight three-and-outs and had just one (1) rushing yard at halftime, but then got touchdowns on special teams and defense before the offense finally got involved. OU outscored the Horns 20-7 in the second half, with embattled QB John Mateer making two huge throws down the stretch, wideout Isaiah Sategna somehow coming down with a pair of sideline catches, and kicker Tate Sandell knocking through the game-winner at the buzzer.
The Sooners On SI crew had four staffers in the stadium. Check out their work from Saturday and every day at OklahomaSoonersOnSI.com.
The pod crew — John Hoover, Ryan Chapman, Carson Field and Ryan Aber — returned for Texas week.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables minced no words when reviewing the performance of both the offensive line and Bill Bedenbaugh, will it result in an improved performance up front? And can quarterback John Mateer take care of the football in the Cotton Bowl?
If all of that falls into place, will the Sooners have enough on defense to contain the Texas offense?
The guys got into all of that and more ahead of the 2026 Red River Rivalry.
Sooners On SI's John Hoover, Ryan Chapman, Carson Field and Ryan Aber present episode 376 of the Sooners On SI Podcast.
Georgia booted us out of the press box, so we drove home and took a couple days to reassess the game.
It was just as bad as we thought. Most of the conversation centers on QB John Mateer and the putrid OU offense, with plenty of breakdown of the OU run game, wide receivers, running backs, offensive line and, of course, coaching.
Then we dive into the defense and how the Sooners essentially almost shut down the Bulldogs but ultimately couldn't withstand both Georgia and the mistakes of the OU offense.
Texas is up next, so Oklahoma doesn't have much time to get things turned around. But the team discussed some solutions and some suggestions.
The Sooners on SI crew returned to preview OU's matchup with No. 2 Georgia!
The guys reacted to everything said by Brent Venables and Ben Arbuckle, as well as what Kirby Smart had to say ahead of the Sooners' second-ever matchup with Georgia.
Will Oklahoma's offense be able to stand up to the pressure and move the ball in Athens? Can the OU defense play a perfect game to keep the entire team in the mix?
Plus, the Sooners picked up a big recruiting win on the football trail and are on a recruiting hot streak in softball.

Well, that was a letdown.
The Sooners on SI crew — Ryan Chapman, Carson Field, Ryan Aber and Brady Trantham — tried to process what they saw in OU's 14-6 win over New Mexico on Saturday night.
Where does the offense go from here? Can John Mateer and Ben Arbuckle figure this out? What is Brent Venables' role in getting the offense on track? And how bad could it get in Georgia if things don't rapidly improve?
The guys broke down everything from the victory, including the postgame thoughts of Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle, John Mateer and more.
The Sooners on SI Podcast returned in the midst of a tumultuous week in Norman.
Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle answered questions about his job security, OU's lack of a running game and quarterback John Mateer's uneven play on Tuesday in the aftermath of Saturday's 17-10 loss to Michigan. Brent Venables also stressed the need to establish the run and gave a handful of injury updates as the Sooners turn the page to Week 3 of the college football season.
Ryan Chapman, Carson Field, Ryan Aber and Brady Trantham broke down everything that was said by Brent Venables and Ben Arbuckle throughout the week as the Sooners search for answers to get the offense back on track.
The guys also took a look ahead to this week's matchup against the Lobos, as well as reacted to everything that was passed through at this week's Board of Regents meeting.

The Sooners On SI crew of John Hoover, Ryan Chapman and Carson Field were all in Ann Arbor to watch Oklahoma's 17-10 loss to the Michigan Wolverines at The Big House.
The guys break down what went wrong offensively, from John Mateer's slow start, strong middle and awful finish to Ben Arbuckle's play calling and other struggles to Brent Venables' lack of oversight for the offense, how the defense will cope without Kip Lewis, how good Michigan and QB Bryce Underwood might really be, and some of the challenges that lie ahead , like Georgia and Texas, plus lots more.
The Sooners on SI Podcast crew — John Hoover, Ryan Chapman, Carson Field and Ryan Aber — returned to preview everything Oklahoma vs. Michigan!
Hoov has spent the week in Ann Arbor as the Wolverines prepare to host the Sooners for the first time ever following a disastrous showing against Western Michigan that went down in the record books as a win.
Is Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood in for another long afternoon at the hands of Brent Venables’ defense? Kyle Whittingham’s comments this week didn’t exactly inspire faith in the Wolverine quarterback.
Then the guys gave the latest update on Oklahoma’s offensive line situation and previewed what John Mateer has to do to guide the Sooners to another massive road victory.
Hoov gave the lay of the land, complete with how the Michigan locals are feeling ahead of the big matchup, before the guys touched on the SEC vs. LSU and how the Tigers’ proposed roster moves differ from the additions OU general manager Jim Nagy has made over the past few weeks.
