  • State's rural hospital crisis threatens health, economy

Alabama’s rural hospitals are vanishing. This devastating crisis is unfolding in the heart of our state, jeopardizing not only the health of our people but the very foundation of rural communities. Since 2011, at least seven rural hospitals in Alabama have closed their doors for good. On our current path, more than half of the state’s remaining 52 rural hospitals are at risk of closing, with 19 identified as being at “immediate risk” of shutting down within the next three years. But this isn’t just about numbers — it’s about lives, livelihoods and the long-term survival of rural communities across...

  • Students deserve our best

Alabama’s public schools are funded from three primary sources. The state receives approximately 10% percent of its funding from the federal government through programs like Title I and school nutrition programs. These programs typically support students coming from low-income households. The next source is local funding. Anywhere between 21% to 34% of education expenses are funded by local ad valorem property taxes — meaning roughly a third of expenses associated with an area’s public schools are supported at the community level. Finally, state government makes up the remaining 65% to 75% by passing the Education Trust Fund Budget each year....

  • New light to be shed on districts?

The partisan complexion of Alabama’s Congressional delegation has changed from six Republicans and one lone Democrat to five Republicans and two Democrats. This change was orchestrated by federal court decree. The federal courts plowed new ground when they ruled that Alabama’s Legislature did not have the right to draw its own congressional lines. The U.S. Supreme Court has adamantly decreed, for the entire duration of U.S. history, that the state legislatures have the omnipotent political power to draw their own state congressional districts. In opinion after opinion, SCOTUS has acknowledged that this is an inherently political process and that you...

  • Jackson council highlights wins

JACKSON — Jackson’s City Council took an opportunity during its April 22 meeting to brag on Jackson High School’s achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Councilmember Daron Bolen noted that the Aggies’ baseball team won its first-round AHSAA playoff series at Geneva, the program’s first road series playoff win since 2009. He also said Jackson Academy received a bye in its first-round AISA playoff series. While those baseball teams were eliminated in the second round, Jackson High’s golf and softball teams are doing well. Mayor Paul South said Jackson was certainly “an athletic town,” mentioning the success...

  • Battle ready

Thomasville grocery store owner Robbie Norman never envisioned he’d be as interested in thoroughbred horses as he is in making sure there are enough heads of lettuce, bunches of bananas and ground chuck at Super Foods. “I’m just an accounting nerd,” he said, “so I sit up here and look at grocery prices all day.” When he was 11, he regretted ever putting his feet in the stirrups after getting thrown off his brother’s horse twice. “I was riding and somebody came down the road and started honking the horn and he got to bucking and running through the field,”...
