    McKenzie Smith pitched a complete game three-hitter with 14 strikeouts and drove in three runs to lead Leroy’s softball team to a 10-2 romp over Southern Choctaw on Feb. 25. The Indians led 1-0 in the second inning when Keri McGee launched a solo home run but the Bears (3-3) responded with a four-run fourth.     Monroeville-- Clarke County (4-4) picked up a road win at Monroe County. The victory was sandwiched between two losses to Sweet Water and Satsuma.   • Burn permits suspended

    The Alabama Forestry Commission suspended the issuance of all burn permits through March 2 due to gusty winds and low relative humidities. Low relative humidities statewide and gusty winds, combined with drying fuels resulting from the lack of significant rain, have resulted in nearly 100 wildfire ignitions. Last week, the agency responded to 263 wildfires that burned more than 6,400 acres of forestland. Anyone who has burned in the last few days should check their fires to make sure they are properly extinguished. Smoking piles immediately adjacent to flammable vegetation have the chance to rekindle and spread under these conditions....

  • Employers can now assist employees who have childcare needs with a tax credit aimed at supporting working families

    Birmingham—Alabama employers now have access to a new tax credit aimed at supporting working families with childcare needs. Beginning March 1, eligible employers could reserve the Childcare Employer Tax Credit in a three-year initiative authorized by the Alabama Legislature in 2024. The tax credit, administered by the Alabama Department of Revenue, incentivizes businesses to provide financial assistance for employees’ childcare or invest in the operation, maintenance and improvement of qualified childcare facilities. The program is available annually through Dec. 31, 2027, unless extended by the legislature.   • Governor and Attorney General clash over commutation

    Birmingham—Gov. Kay Ivey and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall clashed over Ivey’s decision to commute the death sentence of an inmate who has been awaiting execution since 1994.   • BASF announces plans to relocate to McIntosh

    McIntosh- As part of a .1 million investment in plastic additives, BASF officials announced plans to relocate the company’s testing and laboratorial services from Tarrytown, N.Y., to McIntosh. The Washington County Commission on Feb. 24 formally approved the company’s request for a tax abatement as part of the move. The services to be performed in McIntosh will include analytical testing, polymer processing and polymer testing, which will require the employment of approximately 10 chemical engineers, according to documents presented to the commission.
