Our guest this morning is Ben Green. Ben is CEO of the American Red Cross of San Gabriel Pomona Valley.

Ben joined the Chapter as CEO in January, 2007. He brings with him 18 years of experience in non-profit management, having served as Executive Director of the Pasadena Senior Center and the Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs.

Ben previously managed community programs, facilities and events as a Recreation Professional for 15 years.

Throughout his management career, Ben has received recognition for excellence and awards for community service, including Coachella Valley’s Newsmaker of the Year and the Illinois Jaycees’ Top 10 Outstanding Young Persons.

He is an active member of the Pasadena Rotary and serves on the Executive Committee of the Pasadena Chamber.

Ben’s relationship with the Red Cross began early in life. At the age of 15, he volunteered for the organization’s Lifesaving Program. He moved on to serve as a first aid and aquatics instructor throughout the 1970s, becoming a credentialed water safety instructor trainer in 1975.

Ben obtained his bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation administration from Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri.

Today, Tuesday, June 4 is Sidewalk CPR Day in Los Angeles County and Ben is here to tell us all about it.

Our guest this morning is Heidi Butzine. Heidi is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, wine aficionado and shop local maven.

Her most recent book, Shop Local: A Practical Pain-Free Guide to Shopping with Purpose, is part of her personal mission to get more people to support local businesses everywhere and strengthen the communities where they work and live.

She runs several of her own businesses and works with organizations based around her passion for writing and travel, her love of wine and her desire to help small businesses and entrepreneurs succeed.

She is the founder of ShopLocal.us and Certified Locally Owned™ and creator of Wineopolis® Citizen's Guide wine travel book series.

As a Certified Wine Expert and Certified Specialist of Wine, Heidi has also written several books related to wine and spirits education.

In her role as Program Director, Heidi oversees online education and certification for wine and spirits career training programs offered by Bartenders Association International.

Heidi earned her executive MBA from UCLA and her bachelors degree from Cal State University, Dominguez Hills.

Heidi is a Southern California native who lives in Redondo Beach where she grows Zinfandel grapes, dabbles in photography, painting and garagiste winemaking in her spare time.

Our guest this morning is known simply as Survivor Jane.

Like so many women, Survivor Jane was a self-professed ‘oblivious-to-what-was-going-on-around-her’ city-girl. She was clueless about politics, the economy and the ever changing weather patterns around her.

It wasn't until she personally experienced life-threatening assaults, lived through several violent hurricanes and watched as her 401k dwindled down next to nothing that her eyes began to open to what was going on around her.

In 2008 Survivor Jane took a huge leap of faith - she quit her corporate job, sold her home (for next to nothing), cashed-in her 401k (even less of next to nothing) and moved to Western North Carolina to learn a more self-sustaining and self-reliant lifestyle.

Giving up the life of eating at different restaurants each night and having her nails and hair done, she began to research how to prepare for uncertain times and still retain her ‘girlie-ness’.

After that, Survivor Jane decided to make it her mission to educate other women on how to better prepare themselves.

She created the website SurvivorJane.com and writes on a multitude of topics dealing with disaster survival and preparedness in easy to understand ‘girl-talk’ that she interlaces with bits and pieces of humor on her personal experiences and discoveries.

Barry Brisk first appeared in public at the age of 14 when he conducted selections from “South Pacific” at his graduation from Webster Jr. High School in West Los Angeles.

As a student he also conducted the orchestra at University High school in WLA, at Mount St. Mary’s College, and at the University of Music in Vienna (formerly Academy of Music), where he studied with the prominent conductor/teacher Hans Swarowsky.

Professionally Brisk has conducted many orchestras in Southern California, as well as Mexico and Austria.

Music Director of the Beach Cities Symphony since 1994, Brisk is particularly proud of having expanded the orchestra’s repertoire.

In his first 14 years he has repeated only one composition. He has conducted 173 works by 75 composers, eleven of whom are living.

Looking forward to the 60th anniversary season of the orchestra next year, the orchestra has commissioned Maestro Brisk to compose a piece to be performed on the Jan. 2010 concert.

Maestro Brisk’s wife Cathy is an internationally recognized expert on ancient Greek coins.

Their son Philip is doing postdoctoral work in computer science at the Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Philip’s wife Marilyn will receive her master’s degree in political science from the University of Lausanne in June 2009.
