We have a returning guest this morning, Ed Lynch, Founder of Mychal’s Learning Place and first-time guest, Blaisdell Shaw, Program Manager and Manager of Mykie’s Coffee and Bakery Food Truck.

Ed Lynch founded Mychal’s Learning Place in 2001 in honor of his daughter, Mychal. At the age of two it became apparent that she was developmentally and physically disabled. Mychal passed away at the young age of 7 1/2. As a result, Ed has dedicated his life to creating programs that enable youth and adults with developmental disabilities to live independent, fulfilled and productive lives. 

Blaisdell Shaw was hired at Mychal’s Learning Place in November 2015 as Project Manager for Mykie’s, a coffee, bakery and catering business with the primary purpose of providing job training and employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Blaisdell has many years of restaurant and kitchen management experience. She was a barista and barista trainer at various coffee shops, and has experience working with individuals with disabilities, which made her a good fit for the organization. 

This morning, we’re going to learn about the various programs Mychal’s Learning Place offers and the brand new Mykie’s Coffee and Bakery Food Truck, which just opened for business with a Grand Opening celebration last week.

Our guests this morning are Lisa Coffi, Founder & Producing Artistic Director and Linda Ellison, Board President of Shakespeare by the Sea.

Since 1998, Shakespeare by the Sea has been bringing family friendly professional Shakespeare productions to the South Bay and this summer is no different.  They’ll be staging productions of The Comedy of Errors and Henry V during a six week tour in over 20 communities.

SBTS is dedicated to making these classic tales accessible to as many people as possible, targeting artistically disadvantaged areas as well as those of affluence. The program encourages community interaction and enriches neighborhoods by providing summer entertainment for all. They anticipate over 23,000 people will experience one of these free performances this season.

Free Shakespeare is not free to produce. Funds raised throughout the campaign underwrite basic festival expenses and they rely on donations to fund the productions and theatre that families and locals can enjoy for years to come.

We have a returning guest this morning, Marcus Goodloe, Ph.D. aka our friend Goodie. 

A  Compton native, Goodie travels around the country mentoring students and educators, business professionals, athletes and entertainers, and faith communities on a range of issues including cultural and interpersonal relationships, leadership, team and synergy, character formation, and faith. Goodie is an active volunteer at Wave Church and serves as Teaching Pastor at Parkcrest Church in Long Beach. He has worked with several university sports programs and professional teams including the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers. Goodie serves on the Community Engagement Board for Redondo Beach Police Department and works with community activists in an effort to foster better understanding on matters of fairness and justice with respect to the judicial system, and cooperative policing.  He is the author of KingMaker: Applying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Leadership Lessons in Working with Athletes and Entertainers, and co-author of Habits: Six Steps to the Art of Influence (2017). In 2016, Dallas Baptist University established the Marcus Goodie Goodloe Scholarship in his honor.

This morning, in honor of the upcoming Martin Luther King holiday, we’re going to discuss Goodie’s book Kingmaker.

Our guests this morning are Franca Stadvec, Angela Bennett and Michael Stadvec from Fit On Studios.

Fit On Studios in Manhattan Beach was created by Franca Stadvec and Angela Bennett, best friends since college and now neighbors in Manhattan Beach. Fit On was born out of their passion for health, fitness and community. Both had tried chain fitness centers and various exercise studios, but each time wanted more personal attention. They yearned for the sense of community and camaraderie experienced so often in their day-to-day lives in the Beach Cities. Dedicated volunteers and long-time non-profit fundraisers, Franca and Angela believe that success comes from shared purpose and positive ‘X factor’ energy that can lift people up to achieve their goals. 

Franca's husband, Michael Stadvec, is an avid outdoor cyclist and fitness enthusiast who brings over 30 years of experience to his 6 a.m. cycling classes at Fit On Studios. He loves all things tech and has helped implement the technology at Fit On. Michael also speaks to teen groups about making good choices for nutrition and taking care of their bodies. He is one of the founding members of the Tour De Pier which has raised more than $5.6 million for cancer charities.

It’s a whole new year, and the perfect time to discuss how to get on the path to health and wellness.

After earning a BS degree with an emphasis in finance and accounting, she worked as a financial analysist and was hired by Deloitte Consulting as a controller. She opened Manhattan Tax & Accounting in 2005 to provide various accounting services including individual, business, corporate and LLC tax preparation, tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll and business incorporation. Sylvia has distinguished herself as a one-stop accounting firm handling all her client’s tax and accounting needs.

Our guests this morning are Steve Hodges, Mark Sells, Ryder Green and David Dot Hale, from the upcoming Ragin Cajun Pop Up Blues Festival at Saint Rock.

Steve moved from the East Coast to Torrance in 1983 and has resided in the South Bay ever since. In 2014, he and his wife Lisa opened Ragin Cajun Cafe in Redondo Beach which has become a thriving business that hosts many popular annual events from Mardi Gras to Crabfest. 

Blind Lemon Peel with David Dot Hale is a New Orleans blues/jazz/funk ensemble from Los Angeles that recently closed a year playing festivals like the Hayward Blues Festival in Oakland and New Blues Festival in Long Beach, to stages in New York, Paris and New Orleans. 

Mark Sells leads a power trio with a style that’s best described as hi-intensity, blues-rock a la Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert Collins, and Freddie King. Mark and his band continue to garner rave reviews for their live shows and original tunes.

Hot on the heels of the hugely successful Ragin Cajun Blues Festival in Redondo in October, Ragin Cajun Cafe is continuing their commitment to keep the blues alive in the South Bay by presenting the first ever Ragin Cajun Pop-Up Blues Festival at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on Wednesday, January 23 and our guests plan to rock it ‘til the wheels come off.

Marie and Jamie moved to Los Angeles from Paris two years ago seeking to continue their adventure in the restaurant business in what they felt was the most exciting culinary environment in the world.

They started to throw around the idea of building their business out of a food truck that could change locations and establish the Black Flour name throughout the sprawling jumble that makes up Los Angeles.

Prior to Black Flour, Marie and Jamie founded Pink Flamingo Pizza, a gourmet pizza concept with six locations throughout Europe.

Before becoming a leader of the French foodie revolution in the mid-2000s, Marie was a successful actress both on the screen and in the greatest Parisian theaters. Jamie always knew that he wanted to cook; from the high-end Locke-Ober in Boston to Jerry’s and Cafe Luxembourg in Manhattan, in addition to a few Mexican joints in California.

Black Flour’s goal is simple: deliver a product on par with the best crêpes Brittany has to offer while taking advantage of the bounty of Southern California’s farm fresh produce and diversity. The menu pays playful homage to their favorite neighborhoods and inhabitants that make them unique and this morning, we’re going to learn all about it.

Our guest this morning is legendary artist John Van Hamersveld.

John is an American graphic artist and illustrator who has designed album artwork for pop and psychedelic bands since the 1960s including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Born and raised in the South Bay, John has been an important figure in the local surf culture which has influenced his art such as the iconic poster for the surf film Endless Summer.

John recently unveiled a massive mural on a tank at the DWP facility in El Segundo. During the event, the DWP representative was so enthusiastic, he talked about John doing similar projects at their facilities up and down the California coast.
