Our guest this morning is legendary artist John Van Hamersveld.

John is an American graphic artist and illustrator who has designed album artwork for pop and psychedelic bands since the 1960s including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Born and raised in the South Bay, John has been an important figure in the local surf culture which has influenced his art such as the iconic poster for the surf film Endless Summer.

John recently unveiled a massive mural on a tank at the DWP facility in El Segundo. During the event, the DWP representative was so enthusiastic, he talked about John doing similar projects at their facilities up and down the California coast.

Our guests this morning are Richard Ely, and his daughter Heather Ely Miller.

Richard Ely and his partner Tim Smartt have owned the plot of land at 10th Street & Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach for 75 years.

If you’ve ever been to Baskin Robbins, Barsha Wines, El Gringo or Montage Spa on Sepulveda, then you know exactly where that little shopping center is.

To commemorate their 75th anniversary, Richard and Tim recently commissioned artist Kevin Anderson, to paint a beautiful mural on the north facing side of the building. The mural depicts the Manhattan Beach Pier and captures the essence of life in Manhattan Beach. Tim was not able to join us this morning but Richard is here and will be sharing the rich history of this part of Sepulveda.

Heather Ely Miller is Richard’s daughter and having grown up in the area and in the family business, is now the General Manager of the Ely & Smartt shops. Heather graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Kinesiology, but now enjoys running the family business, interfacing with the tenants, and making sure that little slice of Sepulveda stays true to the tenants and the community.

This morning, we’re going to have a little local history lesson and learn about the mural which was celebrated with a Ribbon Cutting this past Wednesday, December 19.

Some of you will recognize these names because beginning thirty years ago, several of our guests had shops in Riviera Village next door to each other on Catalina Avenue. Do you remember Mixt and Jeffrey Scott and Wrapsody?

Well, THEY’RE BACK! They’ve migrated to Palos Verdes and are now known as The Collective at Malaga Cove. The shops opened for business last month, just in time for the holiday season, and if you still have a few items left on your shopping list, you must stop by. I can guarantee you’ll find the most unique gift items the minute you walk through the doors.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I shopped at these stores for years and was devastated when one-by-one, they closed for business. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that they’ve all returned, along with a new business associate.

So, this morning, we’re going to catch up with old friends and learn what’s in store at The Collective at Malaga Cove.

Our guests this morning are Dennis Sullivan, Heather Nakamura, Sean Sáenz and Jessica Siegel from the new Gelson’s Store in Manhattan Beach.

Dennis Sullivan is the Store Director for the Manhattan Beach Gelson’s location. He’s been in the grocery industry since 1977 and with Gelson’s for the past three years. Previous to being selected for Manhattan Beach, he was at the Long Beach, Irvine and Newport Beach stores. 

Heather Nakamura is the Assistant Store Director in Manhattan Beach. She’s a 3rd generation Gelson’s employee - her grandma, both parents, and her brothers have all worked for Gelson’s. 

 Jessica Siegel is Gelson’s Registered Staff Dietitian. For the past 17 years she has taught shoppers that healthy eating can be easy, delicious, and fun.  Jessica is passionate about helping people improve their health and prevent diseases through better knowledge of food and nutrition.  

Sean Sáenz is Gelson’s Senior Director of Meat & Seafood Operations. He’s been with Gelson’s for 3 years and was previously with the Vons/Safeway company for 29 years. 

The Gelson’s Grand Opening of the Manhattan Beach store took place last month and this morning, we’re going to learn all that Gelson’s has to offer the South Bay.

Our guest this morning is musician, Corbin Jones.

Corbin hails from Denver, Colorado, where he began pursuing music with classical double bass studies in grade school. After graduating Kum Laude, and completing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from USC, his love of groove led him to a career in performing and recording upright and electric bass, and sousaphone. Notable jazz performances include collaborations Ron Miles, Munyungo Jackson, Bob Sheppard, and many shows with Sammy Miller & the Congregation in the Appel Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the 2016 and 2017 Umbria Jazz Festivals in Perugia, Italy, and the 2017 Monterey Jazz Festival. Corbin has also provided bass work for 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, and most recently, sousaphone on Beyonce and Jay-Z’s OTR II 2018 world tour.

Corbin & The West Coast Christmas Collective present Let it Swing! on Friday, December 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre and this morning we’re going to learn what attendees can expect.

Pete Moffett is the founder and producer of what will be the 30th Anniversary of the Manhattan Beach Fireworks Show. As a former restaurant owner in Downtown Manhattan Beach, Pete loves Manhattan Beach and understands the power of bringing the community together. To do that with the nationally acclaimed and award winning fireworks show, is a true labor of love… a journey that begins in July of each year and culminates with the Fireworks extravaganza the 2nd Sunday of every December. Depending on Mother Nature, blast off is at 7 p.m.…give or take a minute or two.

Kelly Stroman is the Executive Director for the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professional Association, producer of the weekly MB Farmers’ Market and a Manhattan Beach Rotarian. Kelly also serves on the Board of Directors for the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. She wears many hats, but all serve to make Manhattan Beach the special place that it is.

This morning, it’s all about the 30th Anniversary of the Manhattan Beach Fireworks Show and what attendees can expect at this time honored South Bay tradition taking place on Sunday, December 9 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Our guest this morning is Ed Burzminski of Chamber Marketing Partners, Inc.

Born in Massachusetts, Ed moved to Los Angeles in 1991 and has been a South Bay resident since 2001.  He built Chamber Marketing Partners, a business helping local chambers of commerce throughout the U.S. publishing magazines where local businesses can tell their story, where chambers can promote community and help build strong local economies. These publications tell positive stories about their communities and provide a platform for business to promote themselves to local residents, businesses newcomers and visitors.

Ed is a child of Holocaust survivors, but not in the usual sense.  His father was Jewish and his mother was Catholic.  Both parents survived World War II in southeastern Poland where his mom, Stefania Podgorska along with her pre-teen sister, hid 13 Jews in her attic for nearly 2 years, rescuing them from certain death by the Nazis.  One of the rescued, Maks Diamant, married Stefi.  Maks changed his name to a very Polish sounding Josef Burzminski and they eventually emigrated to the United States, where Joe opened a dental practice in Boston.

This morning, we’ll learn more about Ed’s mom and the work he’s doing with the Manhattan Beach Chamber.

Our guest this morning is Maureen Hunt, President and CEO of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau.

Her career with the Hermosa Beach Chamber began in 2003 as the Office Manager.  Prior to that, she worked at the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce for three years as the Communications Director. In 2013, Maureen was promoted to President of the Chamber. After retiring in 2015, Maureen was asked to return in 2017 as interim President before quickly being asked to stay on board as permanent staff. Prior to working in the Chamber world, Maureen was a successful multi-business owner. She loves working with people and using her business skills and creativity. With 16 years of experience working in the South Bay area, she knows the community well and loves working in Hermosa Beach. Maureen brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, including her expertise producing special events. She is responsible for Hermosa Beach’s own “Fiesta Hermosa”, the largest arts & crafts fair in Southern California. This event is held twice a year, over the weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day, and has over 100,000 people in attendance.

This morning, we’ll catch up with current Chamber news and we’ll learn about the big Holiday Celebration taking place on Saturday, December 1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach.

Our guests this morning are Steven and Cindy Carvel and Suzanne Karger from the Manhattan Beach Kiwanis.

Cindy Carvel was born in Spain and raised in Texas. She began her career in luxury home development where she gained vast knowledge of construction, design and new home and lot sales. 

Steven Carvel is a Manhattan Beach based estate planning attorney that has worked in the community for over a dozen years handling estate planning needs. He was a member of the Leadership Manhattan Beach class of 2017 where he was the class project co-lead for the renovation of Manhattan Beach’s historic Santa Float which has been in operation since 1955. 

Suzanne Karger is a 20 year resident in Manhattan Beach who retired after a 35 year career in the fashion industry.  She is currently serving the community as a Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Commissioner. 

This morning, we’re going to learn about a couple of the Manhattan Beach Kiwanis holiday events – the ever popular Santa Float and the first annual Breakfast with Santa event.
