Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. As many of us start transitioning into the true off-season, we find that whitetails are transitioning in their daily habits and routines as well. This week, the guys discuss their thoughts on what deer are doing now as we roll out of winter and into spring. While we may not be able to hunt them right now, it pays off to know what they're doing. This change in pattern is very similar to what we find deer doing during the time of season where it's not quite pre-rut, but it's also not really "early season" anymore.

We've got another killer episode on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast this week. We're continuing our nameless mini series, highlighting female hunters that we believe should have a voice in this space. This week we're talking to Elizabeth Brownell, who you may know as @rookie_hunting on Instagram and TikTok. 

Elizabeth's story has a lot of twists and turns. What started as trying to find a way to be self-sustainable, led her to veganism and gardening, but ultimately ended with her finding a love for the hunting lifestyle and diving in head-first. Her story takes another turn when she found out about public land and began finding success pretty quickly on her own. We enjoyed our conversation with Elizabeth, and while she may consider herself a rookie, her knowledge is abundant.

We're going way south to Florida this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. Parker is joined by Ricky Bullard & Spencer Ford to talk about their processes to finding public land bucks in Florida every year. Did you know that some parts of Florida open up for deer season in late July, and parts of Florida don't close until late February? That means a deer hunter could hunt 2/3 of the year and never leave his home state! Ricky and Spencer took advantage of the late season rut just last week in mid February, and both killed great public land bucks. In this episode you'll hear the story of these two late season bucks, and the strategy used to get them in range.

If you've listened to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast this year, the theme of the recently concluded whitetail season has been along the lines of: "It's just been tough", or "We just weren't seeing much of a rut this year". That seems to be the case country wide. This week we're joined by two fan favorites, veteran Alabama deer killers Jamie McCay and Michael Perry. It's easy to make excuses for a bad season, but what separates the killers from the crowd is the willingness to adjust their strategy. If you know Michael or have heard his tactics, he puts a lot into hunting creek crossings. You'd likely know Jamie McCay for his talks on hunting bluff gaps. This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we're talking to Jake Lishen about how to make a game plan on southern public land bucks when deer are entering into the post rut phase. For many of us, it's easy to decide to hunt deer like it's the rut when you're within a few weeks of the peak. Especially when you're on an out of state hunt. What Jake talks about is how him and his buddies analyzed the sign on their trip to Alabama, determined it was in fact later than peak rut in that area, and started inching closer and closer to a mature buck based on his sign alone. 

In this convo, Parker and Jake just have a candid conversation breaking down what Jake did to play the odds in this hunt. January in Alabama can be a great time to be in the woods and it sounds like Jake and his friends had a heck of a time enjoying it!

This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we're talking about hunting southern bucks in the swamps. Parker was able to tag his 3rd and final Alabama buck of the year in south Alabama, but the cool thing was being able to piece together some consistencies in swamp habitat that led to finding and taking this buck. Southern swamps are a little bit different than what folks might experience in the midwest or northern US. River cane, palmettos, water oaks & big cypress stands are the norm, broken up by pine and cedar breaks. Over the last several years Parker has challenged himself to try to learn this type of habitat and how the deer are using it. It finally came together, and you're the first ones to hear about it!

This week we're talking with an absolute legendary deer killing machine, Jim Forbes. Jim has been hunting the mountains of Virginia for his whole life and has learned things that have upped his odds in the deer woods. Like so many local legends we've talked to in the past, Jim makes it clear that he's not hunting deer, he's hunting old mature bucks. Mr. Forbes continuously says "food is everything in these mountains", and for good reason. He talks with us about just how important it is to find the hot oak trees in the mountains, with red oak acorns being his personal favorite. This makes sense as he tells us that his most successful time is in the latest part of the rut. Several things stick out to us about Jim. First of all, he is very calculated about his approach. Hearing him talk about how he breaks down the monotonous big woods found in the mountains is nothing short of precise. Secondly, he places most of his confidence in the natural features he finds. If he finds the right vegetation or terrain feature that he knows mature bucks like, he has confidence that one day it will produce, even if it takes years. Lastly, he puts a lot of stock into knowing the area he's hunting from front to back, as any good woodsman should.
