The Ancient Wisdom Behind Our SystemHistorical Foundation:

Egyptian Origins (3000-2000 BCE): Ancient Egyptians divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars called "decans" (from Greek "deka" meaning ten), each ruling approximately 10 days for celestial timekeeping.

Hellenistic Integration (300 BCE): When the Babylonian 12-sign zodiac was adopted in Egypt, the 36 decans were reorganized into the framework we use today (3 decans per zodiac sign).

Hermetic Tradition: Texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus incorporated these astrological concepts into broader spiritual practices.

Tarot Development: While Tarot cards originated in 15th century Italy, the systematic correspondence between 36 decans and the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards (2-10 of each suit) was developed through centuries of esoteric study.

Modern Refinement: Aleister Crowley perfected this system for his Thoth Tarot deck (1938-1943), creating the most complete integration of Egyptian, Hermetic, and Tarot traditions.

    The Astrological Framework:
    • 36 Decans: 10° segments dividing the complete zodiac wheel
    • Solar Progression: The Sun's natural journey creates our 10-day content schedule
    • Tarot Correspondence: Each decan corresponds to specific Minor Arcana cards in the Thoth system
    • Cosmic Timing: Ancient system refined through thousands of years of spiritual practice

This isn't just theory - it's a living system you can use every day to align with cosmic energies and accelerate your spiritual development.

    Brief Historical References

    • The Egyptians (circa 3000-2000 BCE) divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars called "decans" (from Greek "deka" meaning ten, as each ruled approximately 10 days)
    • These decans were primarily used for timekeeping at night
    • They were not yet connected to zodiac signs (the 12-sign zodiac came later) or Tarot (which didn't exist)
    • When the Babylonian zodiac of 12 signs was adopted in Hellenistic Egypt after 300 BCE, the decans were reorganized to fit within the zodiac framework (3 decans per sign)
    • Texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus incorporated these astrological concepts
    • Tarot cards originated in 15th century Italy with no initial astrological associations
    • The systematic correspondence between the 36 decans and the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards (2-10 of each suit) was developed much later
    • Aleister Crowley further refined this system for his Thoth Tarot deck designed 1938-1943

    The Astrological Framework:

    • The zodiac wheel divided into 36 decans (10° segments of each sign)
    • Each decan corresponds to a specific Minor Arcana card in the Thoth Tarot
    • The Sun's journey through these decans creates a natural sequence
    • This ancient system dates back to Egyptian astrology and was refined through Hermetic traditions

    EIGHT OF SWORDS

Third Decan of Gemini (May 21-May 31, 2025)

The Sun is between 0 degrees and 10 degrees in the sign of Gemini.

Today we enter the mutable air of Gemini season as the Sun moves into the first decan of Gemini, corresponding to the Eight of Swords in the Thoth Tarot deck—the Lord of Interference.

The Eight of Swords represents Jupiter in Gemini.

    • Jupiter is about connecting with others, how we integrate into the society, our role, expanding our presence
    • Gemini is the realm of thoughts, ideas, means of communication, books, social media, etc

So the energy of Jupiter in Gemini suggests that:

    • We can expand our presence in our community by communicating, connecting more with others, sharing ideas, thoughts, etc

    and at the same time

    • Expand our own mental perspective in terms of thoughts, ideas, mental experiences, etc

We are transitioning from the material realm of Taurus to the mental realm of Gemini.

What the card actually shows is eight swords arranged in a geometric pattern, with two long central swords and six shorter blades parallel to each other and perpendicular to the two long swords.

    • The background has angular, crystalline patterns in purples and oranges.
    • The two long central swords represent main forces or consciousness
    • The six smaller swords represent scattered, interfering thoughts
    • Each small sword is deliberately depicted as a different cultural weapon suggesting external cultural interference and indoctrination
    • Despite the interference, Jupiter's influence ensures that "good fortune attends even these weakened efforts"
    • Positive expressions: Intellectual curiosity, multiple perspectives, adaptability, communication skills
    • Shadow aspects: Mental overwhelm, paralysis by analysis, scattered attention, superficial understanding
    • Key challenge: Channeling mental energy productively rather than getting lost in endless possibilities
    • Core opportunity: Learning to navigate complexity without becoming trapped by it

A Note on Aleister Crowley's Description:

This card signifies lack of persistence in matters of the intellect and of contest. Good fortune, however, attends even these weakened efforts, thanks to the influence of Jupiter in Gemini, ruling the Decan. Yet the Will is constantly thwarted by accidental interference. The centre of the card is occupied by two long Swords pointed downward. These are crossed by six small swords, three on each side. They remind one of weapons peculiar to their countries or their cults; we see here the Kriss, the Kukri, the Scramasax, the Dagger, the Machete and the Yataghan.

Too much force applied to small things: too much attention to detail at the expense of the principal and more important points.

Crowley saw this card as representing mental scattering where Jupiter's expansive energy becomes fragmented in Gemini's dualistic nature, creating intellectual interference that prevents focused action while still maintaining underlying good fortune.

You can think of the “Eight of Swords” as representing the blockages or "knots" that prevent energy from flowing freely. They are the mental constructs, emotional patterns, and karmic residues that create interference in our energy system. The crossed and interfering swords visually suggest this blockage of flow.

SUPPORTING CARD | THE LOVERS (Major Arcana VI)

The framework of the card is the Arch of Swords, beneath which the Royal Marriage takes place. The Sword is primarily an engine of division. In the intellectual world-which is the world of the Sword suit-it represents analysis.

The hooded figure which occupies the centre of the Card is himself a form of the god Mercury... he is closely shrouded, as if to signify that the ultimate reason of things lies in a realm beyond manifestation and intellect.

The Royal persons concerned are the Black or Moorish King with a golden crown, and the White Queen with a silver crown. The King bears the Sacred Lance, and the Queen the Holy Grail; their other hands are joined, as consenting to the Marriage.

    • Color Associations: Orange, purple, yellow
    • Royal figures: The conscious choice between different paths
    • Angel/Cupid figure: Divine messenger inspiring connection
    • Lion and Eagle: Representing passion and inspiration
    • Mountain/temple: Sacred space of decision-making
    • Geometric patterns: Multiple intersecting influences
    • Discrimination: Ability to discern between options
    • Communication: The exchange of ideas and perspectives
    • Integration: Bringing together different aspects into harmony
    • Relationship: Connection between mind and heart, self and other

    Relationship to Eight of Swords:

The Lovers (Mercury) provides the discernment needed to navigate the Eight's complexity

Where the Eight shows mental entanglement, The Lovers shows conscious choice

Together they represent the progression from confusion to clarity through communication

The Lovers teaches us to choose our thoughts rather than being trapped by them

You can think of “The Lovers” card as representing the balanced ida (feminine/lunar/left) and pingala (masculine/solar/right) channels. When these two polarities are in harmony (like the Queen and King in the card), the conditions are created for energy to rise.

SUPPORTING CARD | ACE OF SWORDS

The overall imagery communicates the emergence of mental clarity (the sword) rising from the golden light of consciousness (the sun) through the cloudy realm of confusion, crowned with divine illumination. The composition creates a vertical energy that suggests upward movement of thought and aspiration.

    • Elemental Attribution: Root of Air element
    • The Ace represents the seed potential that the Eight has difficulty accessing
    • The Green Sword: The coloring is significant - green represents growth, fertility, and life. This suggests that intellectual power (the sword) can be a creative and generative force, not just destructive.
    • The Crown/Diadem: Divine inspiration and mental sovereignty. At the top of the sword is the golden crown with multiple rays of light, 22 rays symbolizing the complete wisdom of the entire Major Arcana - the fullness of spiritual knowledge, and illumination crowning the intellect (the sword).
    • Blue Sky/Clouds: The background shows parting clouds against a blue sky, symbolizing clarity emerging from confusion. The clouds represent the obscuring of truth that the sword cuts through.
    • White Waves/Energy: The white wave-like patterns surrounding the yellow sphere represent the dynamic energy of thought and the movement of air (the element associated with swords).

Word Inscribed on the Blade “Thelema” This is highly significant. “Thelema" means “Will”, emphasizing that the intellect and analytical mind (represented by the Sword) should be directed by and in service to one's True Will - one's authentic purpose or destiny. The presence of this word on the sword transforms it from merely representing mental power to specifically representing the mind aligned with one's spiritual purpose - the intellect guided by True Will rather than ego or external influences.

This deliberate repetition of "Thelema" across these two cards highlights a central theme in Crowley's philosophy: True Will ("Thelema") is the guiding principle that should direct both intellectual pursuits/mind (Swords) and matters of choice / heart / desire (The Lovers).

You can think of the “Ace of Swords” as the awakened sushumna nadi - the central channel through which kundalini energy rises. The sword cutting through clouds parallels how the awakened sushumna cuts through illusion. The crown of light at the top evokes the crown chakra illumination that occurs when kundalini rises fully.

    The sequence energetically:

    • First comes recognition of the interference (8 of Swords)
    • Then balancing of polarities (The Lovers)
    • Finally, the awakening of the central channel and rising energy (Ace of Swords)

    Ida Nadi:

    • Feminine/lunar energy (cooling)
    • Corresponds to the left side of the body
    • Associated with the moon, intuition, and receptivity
    • Connected to right-brain functions (creativity, holistic thinking)
    • Begins and ends on the left side of the spine

    Pingala Nadi:

    • Masculine/solar energy (heating)
    • Corresponds to the right side of the body
    • Associated with the sun, logic, and activity
    • Connected to left-brain functions (analytical thinking, logic)
    • Begins and ends on the right side of the spine

    Sushumna Nadi:

    • Neutral central channel
    • Runs directly through the center of the spine
    • The path through which kundalini energy rises when ida and pingala are balanced

These two lateral channels spiral around the central sushumna nadi, crossing at each chakra point, creating a pattern reminiscent of the caduceus symbol (the medical staff with two snakes). The ida and pingala originate at the base of the spine at the root (muladhara) chakra and terminate at the left and right nostrils respectively.

    INTEGRATION PRACTICE

    Crystals:

    • Clear quartz - for amplification of mental clarity, versatility
    • Melody Stone, Super-Seven, Sacred Seven: a unique blend of amethyst, clear quartz, smoky quartz, cacoxenite, rutile, goethite, and lepidocrocite
    • Fluorite - perfect cubic crystalline structure, used to enhance concentration, mental clarity, learning, protection from mental confusion, while maintaining mental flexibility (variety of colors)
    • Amazonite - truth, courage in communication, harmony between heart and mind

Daily Practice for Gemini’s First Decan:

    • Alternate Nostril Breathing for 2 minutes - Nadi Shodhana Pranayama is specifically designed to balance these two channels, creating the conditions for sushumna activation and kundalini awakening
    • Carry or wear one of the crystals to maintain mental clarity during busy periods

Where do I need to choose clarity over comfortable confusion?

What mental patterns am I ready to untangle and release?

What new way of thinking is seeking to emerge in my consciousness

    SEVEN OF DISKS

Second Decan of Taurus (May 11-May 20, 2025)

The Sun is between 20 degrees and 30 degrees in the sign of Taurus.

    • On May 1 the Sun enters the third decan of Taurus, corresponding to the Seven of Disks in the Thoth Tarot deck—the Lord of Failure.
    • The Seven of Disks corresponds to Saturn in Taurus, which represents a challenging energy combination. Saturn is associated with discipline, limitation, and life lessons, while Taurus relates to material wealth, possessions, and practical matters
    • Circular disks containing what look like warrior/soldier faces (Saturn) and bulls (Taurus)
    • The background features a dark design with leaf or feather-like patterns
    • This card represents: the testing of patience through disappointment
    • Disappointment that comes from attachment to outcomes
    • Necessary period of challenge that tests one's perseverance before potential later success

THE PRINCESS OF DISKS & THE STAR

Supporting Cards for the Third Decan of Taurus (Seven of Disks)

    THE STAR (Major Arcana XVII)

    • The card depicts a nude female figure pouring water from two vessels - one golden cup held high, and what appears to be a silver vessel below. She is set against a cosmic background with a large reddish/pink planet or celestial body. The image is dynamic, with flowing lines and spiral energy patterns.
    • She represents the infinite potential of the cosmos and the divine inspiration flowing into our world.
    • It suggests a time of clarity and cosmic alignment after periods of challenge. The card invites us to reconnect with our higher purpose and the divine spark within, helping us recognize our place in the grand cosmic design
    • While most of the card features spiral energy, Crowley deliberately included some linear geometric elements, noting that "the mind of man is obsessed and blinded by geometry which blocks his spiritual vision.” This creates an intentional contrast between spiritual (spiral, infinite possibilities) and material (linear) geometric patterns.

    PRINCESS OF DISKS

    • The card shows a figure standing tall in a grove of reeds or bamboo-like stalks against a golden background. She wears a horned headdress and appears to be draped in white robes with what looks like a sheepskin or fur cloak. She holds a staff or spear in one hand that points downward, and in the other hand she holds a disk with intricate spiral / circular patterns and yin yang symbol. The overall color scheme uses earthy yellows, browns, and white.
    • The Princess of Disks represents the earthy part of Earth, the most material and tangible aspects of the physical world.
    • Fertility and Creation; New Beginnings; This is about bringing ideas into physical reality.
    • Spiritual Connection to Earth - spiritual wisdom can emerge from engagement with the material world.
    • She reminds us that the most profound spiritual truths can be found through deep engagement with the natural world and its cycles.

A Journey Through Earth, Spirit, and Transformation

The Seven of Disks shows Saturn in Taurus—restrictive energy applied to material matters, creating temporary stagnation. This pause is necessary, as it represents a period of gestation and internal transformation. The "failure" is merely apparent, as it's actually preparing the way for rebirth.

The Star then arrives as divine intervention and inspiration after this difficult period.

Finally, the Princess of Disks embodies the full manifestation of what was being prepared during the "failure" phase and inspired during The Star phase. She brings forth new life from the lessons learned.

DAILY PRACTICE FOR THE THIRD DECAN

Carry a stone to maintain connection to this energy:

    • Shiva Lingam: Shiva Lingam stones are river-polished jasper from the Narmada River in India—they literally embody the process of earth being shaped and refined by water over time. The distinctive patterns and banding in Shiva Lingam stones—with their reddish-brown matrix and cream/egg-colored oval sections—symbolize potential waiting to be activated.
    • Black Tourmaline: Black tourmaline is the most common member of the tourmaline family of minerals. It's characterized by its deep black color, columnar crystal structure, and glossy luster when polished.
    • Smoky Quartz: Symbolizes transmutation, practicality, endurance, releasing old patterns and attachment to immediate results
    • Chrysoprase: The name "chrysoprase" comes from the Greek words "chrysos" meaning "gold" and "prason" meaning "leek" - essentially describing it as a "golden-green leek-colored stone." This Greek etymology reflects its characteristic color. Chrysoprase has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It was known to ancient Greeks and Romans, who prized it as a decorative stone. In ancient times, it was sometimes confused with emerald due to its vibrant green color. It was reportedly one of Alexander the Great's favorite gemstones.

Practice the Five Pointed Star to Goddess Flow

Mantra concentration exercise: “Aum Shanicharaya Namaha" (Hello Saturn!)

    • Moon in Taurus
    • Fixed Earth, earthy stability infused with lunar receptivity

    • Moon (controlling emotions) - Emotional intelligence and intuitive awareness provide guidance
    • Mercury (listening and thinking) - Clear communication and analytical thinking refine the approach
    • Mars (action) - Finally, directed action and energy bring it all into manifestation
    • This color arrangement creates a visual balance between the cooling, reflective energies (blue) and the warming, active energies (red), with the integrating consciousness (gold) at the center
    • The entire color scheme reinforces the card's message that success in the material realm comes from the perfect integration of diverse but complementary energies.

THE QUEEN OF DISKS & THE MOON

Supporting Cards for the Second Decan of Taurus (Six of Disks)

    Queen of Disks

    • As queen of the earth suit, she represents someone who manages material resources with emotional intelligence and intuitive understanding
    • In Crowley's system, the Queen of Disks represents the watery aspect of earth - the emotional and nurturing qualities expressed through material means
    • She embodies fertility, abundance, generosity, and practical nurturing
    • The goat at her feet represents her mastery over the material realm and her ability to navigate difficult terrain with sure-footedness.
    • The staff symbolizes her authority over the earth element.

    THE MOON (Major Arcana XVIII)

    • The card depicts two jackal-headed Egyptian deities (Anubis figures) standing as guardians on either side of a central path
    • At the bottom of the card, is a golden beetle holding a solar disk, against a backdrop of blue and red waves
    • In the center is a large yellow-white path leading upward to a full moon disk
    • This card represents the realm of illusion, the subconscious, and the path through darkness
    • The Moon card represents the need for discernment when navigating the realm of emotions, dreams, and intuitions, where things are not always as they appear
    • By acknowledging the temporary nature of physical existence (Memento Mori), we gain perspective that helps us move through the illusions and uncertainties represented by the Moon

    FIVE OF DISKS

First Decan of Taurus (April 20-April 30, 2025)

The Sun is between 0 degrees and 10 degrees in the sign of Taurus.

    • On April 20 the Sun enters the first decan of Taurus, corresponding to the Five of Disks in the Thoth Tarot deck—the Lord of Worry.
    • The Five of Disks represents Mercury in Taurus—analytical energy manifesting through the Fixed Earth element
    • Mercury expression within Venus territory - Analysis, communication, and mental processes applied to material concerns
    • Brings challenges around material stability, physical wellbeing, and practical concerns
    • As we transition from the fiery completion of Aries season, this card shows us how we must ground ourselves in material reality and address practical challenges
    • Progression: Moving from fiery completion (Four of Wands) to earthy challenge
    • Five disks arranged in an inverted manner symbolizing material instability
    • Each disk contains a different geometric shape and color: Pink triangle; Yellow square; Light blue circle; Black eclipse/oval; White/grey crescent moon
    • The golden/yellow lines connecting the disks create tension and instability in the pattern
    • The dark blue background with rays breaking through represents the challenging Mercury in Taurus energy - thoughts (Mercury) becoming fixated on material concerns (Taurus)
    • The worry represented in this card is precisely what Jesus counseled against when he said, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself" (Matthew 6:34).

THE ACE OF DISKS & THE HIEROPHANT

Supporting Cards for the First Decan of Taurus (Five of Disks)

ACE OF DISKS (Root of Earth)

    • At its center is a golden disk with a ten-pointed star (decagram) pattern
    • Contains a smaller pentagram at its core with three interlocking circles (similar to the Hierophant's wand)
    • The central disk is surrounded by wings, plant fronds, and pine cones arranged in a symmetrical pattern
    • The entire image has the appearance of a stylized flower or cosmic egg of creation
    • The green fronds represent growth and fertility, while the pine cones symbolize the pineal gland and spiritual awakening, as well as fertility and regeneration
    • Around the edge of the central disk, we can see the word “TO MEGA THIRION" inscribed in capital Greek letters. The inscription translates to: The Great Beast
    • This interpretation resonates with Jesus's teachings about the Kingdom of God being within you (Luke 17:21) and his emphasis on developing spiritual awareness beyond material attachments.
    • As the Ace of the suit, this card represents the pure essence or seed of the earth element - the ultimate potential of material manifestation, wealth, and physical reality. It symbolizes the primordial energy from which all material forms emerge.
    • The rich green and gold colors reinforce the connection to fertility, abundance, and material wealth. The entire card radiates a sense of wholeness, completion, and perfect balance - the ideal state of material existence before it becomes subject to the complexities and challenges seen in cards like the Five of Disks.
    • Potential: Seed of all material manifestation
    • Foundation: Solid basis for growth and development
    • Purity: Uncorrupted material essence
    • Fertility: Productive capacity within material realm
    • Wholeness: Complete expression of earth element
    • The Ace of Disks provides the pure material potential obscured by the Five's challenges
    • The Ace represents the perfect blueprint that the Five must strive to remember
    • Together they remind us that limitation (Five) is a temporary phase in the cycle of manifestation (Ace)
    • The Ace shows the pristine origin that remains available even amidst the Five's difficulties
    • The concept of divine abundance manifesting on earth resonates with Jesus's parables about the Kingdom of God, particularly those involving seeds, growth, and harvest (like the Parable of the Sower).

    THE HIEROPHANT (Major Arcana V)

    • The central figure wears orange/golden robes
    • Holds a three-ringed wand (the triple circle symbol), representing his authority as a spiritual teacher who unites the three worlds (physical, mental, and spiritual)
    • The triple rings in Crowley's card could be compared to the Christian Trinity, while the pentagram could represent the five wounds of Christ.
    • The pentagram on his chest symbolizes the four elements plus spirit, indicating mastery over the material and spiritual realms
    • The blue figure at his feet represents the ancient wisdom traditions that inform his teachings
    • He's surrounded by animal figures (elephant, bull, ram, etc.) which are the guardians of sacred knowledge and also represent the zodiacal energies, particularly emphasizing Taurus (the bull) to which this card corresponds
    • Tradition: Established systems of knowledge
    • Integration: Bringing spiritual wisdom into material form
    • Education: Formalized teaching and learning
    • Structure: Organized approach to knowledge
    • Initiation: Guided entry into deeper understanding
    • The Hierophant (Taurus) provides the wisdom tradition needed to understand material challenges
    • The Five of Disks shows what happens when we lose connection to spiritual wisdom
    • Together they represent the necessity of integrating spiritual and material concerns
    • The Hierophant offers the structured approach needed to transform the Five's challenges

DAILY PRACTICE FOR THE FIRST DECAN

Carry a stone to maintain connection to this energy:

    • Moss Agate - transform material challenges, growth within solid structure
    • Hematite - grounding, stability, practical thinking, protection
    • Calcite - Stabilizing knowledge in physical form
    • Cinnabar - Vitality, strength, self-assurance, and manifestation

Morning barefoot contact with earth/soil before beginning the day

Practice strong Mountain Pose, Extended Mountain, Side Extensions as in Standing Half Moon

Mantra concentration exercise: “LAM" (for the Earth element)

Ask yourself: What practical resources do I already possess that I may be overlooking?

Key challenge: Facing material limitations without being defined by them

Core opportunity: Finding innovative solutions to practical challenges

Create a resource inventory listing all available assets and supports, analyze your resources and find innovative solutions

    Journal Prompts:

    • What material challenges am I currently facing that need practical wisdom?
    • How can I reconnect with the pure potential (Ace of Disks) beneath my current limitations?
    • What traditional knowledge or established systems might help my situation?
    • How might I use the Hierophant's guidance to remember the abundance inherent in all material experience?
    • Who are the 5 people I am around the most? Do they uplift me or drain me?
