    ayurveda in the real sense

    00:01:27.700 --> 00:01:30.500

    of ayurveda as charaka was intending

    00:01:30.500 --> 00:01:34.200

    it to be so no woo-woo-ness in

    00:01:34.200 --> 00:01:37.500

    your everyday life to be

    00:01:49.400 --> 00:01:55.700

    on your way of being a great

    ayurvedic practitioner practitioner.

    00:01:55.700 --> 00:01:58.500

    Very nice. Okay, we will be right back

    00:01:58.500 --> 00:02:01.800

    to go over ayurveda and mental health

    00:02:01.800 --> 00:02:02.600

    stay tuned.

    00:02:11.700 --> 00:02:14.300

    And we're back. So we're back to talk about

    00:02:14.300 --> 00:02:17.400

    how ayurveda looks at mental health.

    00:02:17.400 --> 00:02:20.500

    So this is a look

    00:02:20.500 --> 00:02:23.300

    at ayurveda, but it's not just ayurveda. This is a look at

    00:02:23.300 --> 00:02:25.700

    how the original ayurvedic

    00:02:26.400 --> 00:02:29.300

    concept texts yeah talked about it. So this

    00:02:29.300 --> 00:02:32.100

    comes from characa. Yes, did I pronounce that

    00:02:32.100 --> 00:02:38.800

    Right? Yes. I know. I always bastardize his name. So Charaka the

    original ayurvedic physician. Yeah,

    00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:41.900

    and it also comes from Dr. Singh.

    00:02:41.900 --> 00:02:44.900

    Yes, who you trained with for for quite

    00:02:44.900 --> 00:02:47.400

    a while Yes at Mount Madonna Institute. So

    00:02:47.400 --> 00:02:50.600

    who's Dr. Singh real quick doctor Singh is

    00:02:50.600 --> 00:02:56.700

    one of the very few activated professors

    who still teaches following

    00:02:56.700 --> 00:03:02.500

    Charaka Samhita following

    the book the text that

    00:03:02.500 --> 00:03:08.200

    charaka wrote and he has

    done a tremendous amount of research compared

    00:03:08.200 --> 00:03:15.700

    to other professors. On

    ayurveda, actually showing that

    00:03:15.700 --> 00:03:21.600

    what charaka was saying works today

    Okay, so and

    00:03:21.600 --> 00:03:24.500

    we'll list some of his books that he's

    00:03:24.500 --> 00:03:25.900

    written in the podcast

    00:03:26.300 --> 00:03:29.700

    the show notes Yes definitely So so this

    00:03:29.700 --> 00:03:32.100

    doesn't come from just out of

    00:03:32.100 --> 00:03:35.500

    your ass. You actually you actually neither my ass.

    00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:38.500

    Nor yours. Yes, definitely not mine. So this

    00:03:38.500 --> 00:03:41.600

    is information that comes from

    00:03:41.600 --> 00:03:44.400

    the original ayurveda. Exactly. Okay.

    00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:47.200

    I just wanted to get that through before we start

    00:03:47.200 --> 00:03:50.900

    talking that this is documented. Yes. This

    00:03:50.900 --> 00:03:53.600

    is documented and verified. Okay, so

    00:03:53.600 --> 00:03:56.300

    tell me how does Charaka

    00:03:57.500 --> 00:03:58.000

    talk about

    00:03:58.900 --> 00:03:59.500

    Mental Health

    00:04:01.300 --> 00:04:07.300

    characa says that disease happens

    due to

    00:04:07.300 --> 00:04:10.000

    lack of balance due to

    00:04:10.900 --> 00:04:16.100

    imbalance between the person and

    their environment and there's a

    00:04:16.100 --> 00:04:19.400

    fancy Sanskrit word for that. Yes. The expression that

    00:04:19.400 --> 00:04:26.200

    charaka uses is loka purusha vaisamya

    and that means vaisamya

    00:04:26.200 --> 00:04:29.500

    means imbalance lack of

    00:04:29.500 --> 00:04:32.900

    balance. Okay, Loka means environment

    00:04:32.900 --> 00:04:36.800

    loka loka. Yes Shakira sings

    00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:42.700

    a song about that. Yeah. That's a good song

    purusha purusha It's

    00:04:42.700 --> 00:04:48.700

    very interesting that charaka refers

    to the person as

    00:04:48.700 --> 00:04:51.600

    purusha because purusha is also

    00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:54.200

    the word for God.

    00:04:55.600 --> 00:05:01.300

    What charaka wants to say is that

    when there is lack of balance between

    00:05:01.300 --> 00:05:04.700

    you as

    00:05:04.700 --> 00:05:07.400

    your Consciousness you as

    00:05:07.400 --> 00:05:10.500

    your own God you you as your own God because

    00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:13.200

    even Christianity says that God is within

    00:05:13.200 --> 00:05:15.100

    us God is within us. Yes.

    00:05:16.400 --> 00:05:22.000

    When there is lack of balance between you as

    your own tiny little

    00:05:22.700 --> 00:05:25.600

    God and your environment bad things

    00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:31.200

    happen now. No, I

    don't want

    00:05:31.200 --> 00:05:34.500

    people to think. Oh my God, I'm screwed. Right

    00:05:34.500 --> 00:05:37.200

    there are always things. I don't like people I don't

    00:05:37.200 --> 00:05:40.500

    like foods I shouldn't be eating things I shouldn't

    00:05:40.500 --> 00:05:43.100

    be doing. But just because you don't like somebody doesn't mean that's

    00:05:43.100 --> 00:05:46.600

    an imbalance. That means you're probably balanced because you're saying

    00:05:46.600 --> 00:05:52.300

    oh s***. I don't want to be near that person. Exactly, exactly.

    I have that many times. Yes, so

    00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:54.700

    that's the thing.

    00:05:55.700 --> 00:05:58.800

    Also also what is

    00:05:58.800 --> 00:06:04.500

    lack of balance right when

    ayurveda

    00:06:04.500 --> 00:06:07.500

    also says that when you are relatively

    00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:10.500

    balanced you can tell what's

    00:06:10.500 --> 00:06:11.400

    not good for you.

    00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:15.700

    And what's what's good for you. You can

    00:06:15.700 --> 00:06:18.500

    tell that but when you are out of

    00:06:18.500 --> 00:06:21.300

    balance, you cannot. So the whole

    00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:24.100

    concept that the people say, oh, you know what

    00:06:24.100 --> 00:06:27.500

    you're your body will tell you what you like exactly only

    00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:30.400

    is true if you are balanced exactly. So all these

    00:06:30.400 --> 00:06:33.400

    people that are eating crap because they think

    00:06:33.400 --> 00:06:36.400

    that that's what their body's saying if they're out of

    00:06:36.400 --> 00:06:39.800

    balance their body is just literally trying to get them more out of balance

    00:06:39.800 --> 00:06:42.400

    exactly. Or the people that do

    00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:44.000

    the yoga practice that all it does is

    00:06:44.500 --> 00:06:47.600

    aggravate their Vata Dosha,

    00:06:47.600 --> 00:06:53.100

    right? So that's that's not being

    balanced. That's not knowing What's

    00:06:53.100 --> 00:06:56.300

    good for you. So so it's

    00:06:56.300 --> 00:07:02.800

    it's a fine line right when there

    is lack of balance between you

    00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:05.500

    as your own little God and your environment

    00:07:05.500 --> 00:07:08.500

    disease can happen. But how can you

    00:07:08.500 --> 00:07:11.800

    tell when there is that lack of balance right

    00:07:11.800 --> 00:07:12.500

    because

    00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:16.400

    when you are out of balance, you are not

    00:07:16.400 --> 00:07:18.100

    your own little purusha anymore.

    00:07:19.200 --> 00:07:25.700

    Right. You are your own little devil. the Consciousness. Yes.

    The Consciousness cannot manifest

    00:07:25.700 --> 00:07:27.400

    itself.

    00:07:28.300 --> 00:07:31.700

    Does that make sense? we are our

    00:07:31.700 --> 00:07:34.800

    own little God. We have God within us

    00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:37.700

    right our Consciousness. Our strength

    00:07:37.700 --> 00:07:40.900

    is within us but when we are so screwed up

    00:07:40.900 --> 00:07:43.800

    that our own little Consciousness cannot

    00:07:43.800 --> 00:07:49.400

    manifest itself, then what happens

    you are in a vicious

    00:07:49.400 --> 00:07:49.900

    cycle.

    00:07:50.100 --> 00:07:50.900

    that's

    00:07:51.900 --> 00:07:54.600

    the fine line, so can you

    00:07:54.600 --> 00:07:57.500

    tell when that is switching or okay. So

    00:07:57.500 --> 00:08:00.700

    how is that so? You like that

    00:08:00.700 --> 00:08:03.700

    how is that so, we have

    00:08:03.700 --> 00:08:06.400

    the answer right the meaning of life, not that I didn't know

    00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:09.800

    that the meaning of life is about to manifest

    00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:10.300

    itself.

    00:08:11.500 --> 00:08:13.100

    if you are not

    00:08:13.700 --> 00:08:17.300

    happy if you are not content

    00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:21.900

    80% of the time in

    00:08:21.900 --> 00:08:24.000

    your daily life. If you are

    00:08:24.400 --> 00:08:27.600

    not content 80% of the time at

    00:08:27.600 --> 00:08:30.200

    least 80% of the time in your own

    00:08:30.200 --> 00:08:32.300

    daily life so it can be 100% it can be.

    00:08:33.400 --> 00:08:36.300

    But pretty usually not. Yeah, if

    00:08:36.300 --> 00:08:39.400

    you're not content because I'm about a hundred percent content. Yes,

    00:08:39.400 --> 00:08:42.400

    we are talking about regular people. Oh

    00:08:42.400 --> 00:08:45.200

    Not Perfection. Yeah, right. If you are

    00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.300

    not content at least 80% of the

    00:08:48.300 --> 00:08:50.200

    time in your daily life.

    00:08:50.900 --> 00:08:53.300

    Then your

    00:08:53.300 --> 00:08:59.900

    little purusha your deep down Consciousness is

    not manifesting itself.

    00:08:59.900 --> 00:09:02.900

    Then there are things ayurveda

    00:09:02.900 --> 00:09:05.800

    says charaka would say you need

    00:09:05.800 --> 00:09:06.500

    to address.

    00:09:07.500 --> 00:09:10.200

    Okay, characa says that you should

    00:09:10.200 --> 00:09:16.700

    be content most of the time and that's

    where we are going with the 80/20.

    00:09:16.700 --> 00:09:19.900

    Yeah, because 8020 has always been a good number exactly.

    00:09:19.900 --> 00:09:25.700

    Exactly. Charaka doesn't say 80/20.

    That's that's us.

    00:09:25.700 --> 00:09:28.400

    So you did pull that out of your ass that came out

    00:09:28.400 --> 00:09:31.700

    of my yes the 80/20

    00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:35.400

    but that is true yes, that's so

    00:09:36.400 --> 00:09:39.200

    if I'm not happy or content because

    00:09:39.200 --> 00:09:42.500

    happiness is different than content content. If I'm

    00:09:42.500 --> 00:09:48.800

    not content most of the day and night

    then my body is or

    00:09:48.800 --> 00:09:54.800

    my mind or my whatever is

    off-kilter. Exactly and there's

    00:09:54.800 --> 00:10:01.600

    a good chance I would be then sabotaging

    myself with that off-kilter exactly.

    00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:05.700

    You would be sabotaging yourself long-term Should

    00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:08.100

    you continue in that path. Okay.

    00:10:08.900 --> 00:10:11.400

    So that's that's something that you want to look at

    00:10:11.400 --> 00:10:17.200

    in a day every day. Exactly

    every day. I know that they talk about

    00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:23.800

    in the morning Some people say you should write notes and

    stuff but or the night before

    00:10:23.800 --> 00:10:26.500

    but that is something that they could do is at

    00:10:26.500 --> 00:10:29.200

    the end of the night. How content was I

    00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:32.600

    today exactly. So instead of writing notes about blah

    00:10:32.600 --> 00:10:35.500

    blah blah. How content was I today

    00:10:35.500 --> 00:10:36.400

    exactly and

    00:10:37.300 --> 00:10:41.500

    Can I be more content tomorrow exactly? That's

    00:10:41.500 --> 00:10:47.900

    the idea that we can always become

    healthier and healthier mentally

    00:10:47.900 --> 00:10:50.700

    physically and otherwise

    00:10:50.700 --> 00:10:56.000

    emotionally and emotionally as we

    go so we're not

    00:10:56.500 --> 00:10:59.500

    perfect the way we're so we are not perfect the way

    00:10:59.500 --> 00:11:02.700

    we are that's number one and number

    00:11:02.700 --> 00:11:03.500

    two is

    00:11:04.400 --> 00:11:07.800

    Things don't start going South as you

    00:11:07.800 --> 00:11:13.200

    age. Yep, that's the other misconception so

    we can become older and

    00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:16.500

    happier more or more

    00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:19.100

    content day by day. We can also

    00:11:19.100 --> 00:11:22.700

    become older and stronger exactly we can become older

    00:11:22.700 --> 00:11:25.500

    and more mobile exactly we can become older and this

    00:11:25.500 --> 00:11:28.700

    one is should be it's smarter exactly smarter. Yes.

    00:11:28.700 --> 00:11:31.500

    So every day working on

    00:11:31.500 --> 00:11:34.500

    something to become better is a

    00:11:34.500 --> 00:11:37.300

    good thing. Is a good thing. There are there are...

    Transcription

    00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:30.400

    Hello, this is Tim. And this is Vie and we're back.

    00:00:31.100 --> 00:00:34.400

    We are back. Yep. It's been what nine months. It's been

    00:00:34.400 --> 00:00:37.400

    yes since October.. Yeah, we've

    00:00:37.400 --> 00:00:40.500

    had a lot of things going on. So we were stuck not

    00:00:40.500 --> 00:00:43.600

    being able to do this. We sold our property we moved

    00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:43.900

    we

    00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:47.500

    Didn't sell the property we moved back. We sold property

    00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:50.800

    we moved. We didn't sell the property we moved back and now

    00:00:50.800 --> 00:00:52.400

    we sold the property. Yep. For good. So we had to do

    00:00:55.500 --> 00:00:58.500

    a lot of packing unpacking getting things

    00:00:58.500 --> 00:01:01.300

    ready and now we're done and we're

    00:01:01.300 --> 00:01:04.800

    back in podcasting world. Yes,

    00:01:04.800 --> 00:01:07.900

    so we'll be going back to doing every

    00:01:07.900 --> 00:01:10.300

    Thursday every Thursday and it's going

    00:01:10.300 --> 00:01:14.200

    to be on ayurveda and yoga and it's going

    00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:15.700

    to be marvelous.

    00:01:16.500 --> 00:01:19.500

    It's gonna be way more fun than it

    00:01:19.500 --> 00:01:22.500

    was. Yes, no more having to work on

    00:01:22.500 --> 00:01:25.600

    selling the property less vata derangement

    00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:28.300

    Yes. Less. Not no

    00:01:28.300 --> 00:01:31.400

    vata derangement just less so with that

    00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:35.400

    We're going to start a little series on ayurveda

    00:01:35.400 --> 00:01:38.100

    for mental health, and so we're going to

    00:01:38.100 --> 00:01:40.700

    start that just after this message.

    00:01:41.800 --> 00:01:43.500

    Stay tuned. We'll be right back.

    00:01:52.600 --> 00:01:55.700

    And we're back and we left a subliminal

    00:01:55.700 --> 00:01:59.400

    message in the music that said share our

    00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:01.600

    podcast with all your

    00:02:01.600 --> 00:02:04.800

    friends and sign up

    00:02:04.800 --> 00:02:07.800

    to listen to all our future podcasts

    00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:12.500

    And give us the greatest reviews ever ever.

    00:02:13.600 --> 00:02:16.300

    So what I want to do before we start talking

    00:02:16.300 --> 00:02:19.700

    about yoga and ayurveda is a little bit about what

    00:02:19.700 --> 00:02:20.600

    we've done.

    00:02:21.400 --> 00:02:24.600

    So we sold our work live. We're no

    00:02:24.600 --> 00:02:26.000

    longer there we closed our studio.

    00:02:26.800 --> 00:02:29.800

    We haven't opened

    00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:30.300

    a studio.

    00:02:31.600 --> 00:02:34.800

    We've moved we're no longer in Saint Pete, which is

    00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:38.200

    a great great town. But it changed so

    00:02:37.200 --> 00:02:41.500

    dramatically in the last couple years. It's huge

    00:02:40.500 --> 00:02:44.200

    compared to what it was. We're now

    00:02:43.200 --> 00:02:47.200

    living a little smaller life

    00:02:46.200 --> 00:02:49.700

    in a little town

    00:02:49.700 --> 00:02:52.100

    trying to figure out what we want to be when we

    00:02:52.100 --> 00:02:55.800

    grow up. Exactly. That's what it feels like. Yep. We

    00:02:55.800 --> 00:02:58.500

    got a puppy. Yes. Because we're not traveling anymore.

    00:02:58.500 --> 00:03:01.700

    Yes. We got a wonderful puppy named Freyja. She

    00:03:01.700 --> 00:03:04.600

    is what next week

    00:03:04.600 --> 00:03:07.400

    Well when this podcast is out, she's gonna be three months

    00:03:07.400 --> 00:03:10.600

    old. Yeah, and she's a border collie mix

    00:03:10.600 --> 00:03:13.500

    we don't know what exactly she is yet

    00:03:13.500 --> 00:03:16.100

    or how big she's gonna be. She looks like

    00:03:16.100 --> 00:03:19.700

    she's gonna be big. Yes. We got her from a Kill shelter. Yeah, so

    00:03:19.700 --> 00:03:20.000

    which

    00:03:20.800 --> 00:03:23.100

    Was bad that it's a Kill shelter, but

    00:03:23.100 --> 00:03:26.300

    it's good because they don't do anything unless they

    00:03:26.300 --> 00:03:29.400

    really really have to yes, so they hold

    00:03:29.400 --> 00:03:32.400

    on to dogs and cats for a very long time and

    00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:35.400

    take care of them and try to get them owners. Yes. So

    00:03:35.400 --> 00:03:38.100

    we got a puppy if you

    00:03:38.100 --> 00:03:41.900

    go to our Facebook or our Instagram. Yeah, you

    00:03:41.900 --> 00:03:44.200

    can see pictures of her because she's the ayurvedic

    00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:48.000

    puppy. She's yep completely ayurvedic puppy and

    00:03:47.700 --> 00:03:50.900

    we're just doing construction and things

    00:03:50.900 --> 00:03:53.300

    like that. So now we

    00:03:53.300 --> 00:03:56.700

    can get back into talking about

    00:03:57.800 --> 00:04:00.500

    Our beliefs in yoga and Ayurveda. Yes. So

    00:04:00.500 --> 00:04:04.000

    one of the things that we have seen is that

    00:04:03.400 --> 00:04:06.700

    ayurveda is extremely

    00:04:06.700 --> 00:04:09.400

    important today compared to say

    00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.500

    three years ago. Yep, so I will

    00:04:12.500 --> 00:04:13.300

    go with Vie

    00:04:14.600 --> 00:04:17.200

    You're an ayurvedic expert. Please tell me

    00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:20.200

    why true ayurveda or real

    00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:23.200

    ayurveda is so important to the world

    00:04:23.200 --> 00:04:24.500

    now.

    00:04:26.400 --> 00:04:27.100

    well

    00:04:28.500 --> 00:04:32.000

    The world is obviously shifting in many many

    00:04:31.300 --> 00:04:34.500

    ways. So no matter where

    00:04:34.500 --> 00:04:37.500

    you actually live. I'm sure

    00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:41.300

    you have seen major shifts in

    00:04:40.300 --> 00:04:43.500

    your world in

    00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:47.100

    the last couple of years and these shifts keep

    00:04:46.100 --> 00:04:48.900

    increasing and keep increasing.

    00:04:49.900 --> 00:04:52.600

    A lot of times it feels like there

    00:04:52.600 --> 00:04:55.800

    is nothing you can do about it about those shifts

    00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:58.800

    and very often That's true

    00:04:58.800 --> 00:05:01.800

    right there is nothing you can actually do.

    00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:06.200

    Or it feels it feels like there is nothing

    00:05:06.200 --> 00:05:09.900

    you can do. You can't make these shifts stop,

    00:05:09.900 --> 00:05:10.500

    right?

    00:05:11.300 --> 00:05:15.000

    But what you can do is actually

    00:05:14.900 --> 00:05:18.200

    adapt to the shifts and

    00:05:17.200 --> 00:05:21.200

    keep improving your

    00:05:21.200 --> 00:05:25.100

    life and your community's life by taking

    00:05:24.100 --> 00:05:26.300

    certain actions.

    00:05:27.200 --> 00:05:30.000

    That's what ayurveda says that's what

    00:05:30.900 --> 00:05:33.400

    charaka says that you have

    00:05:33.400 --> 00:05:37.300

    to actually figure out ways

    00:05:36.300 --> 00:05:40.800

    to always adapt to

    00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:43.400

    the changes that are happening to keep

    00:05:43.400 --> 00:05:46.600

    making yourself healthier and

    00:05:46.600 --> 00:05:49.800

    happier and your community healthier and

    00:05:49.800 --> 00:05:50.100

    happier.

    00:05:51.200 --> 00:05:54.600

    So charaka says you pay

    00:05:54.600 --> 00:05:58.500

    attention you pay attention you study and

    00:05:57.500 --> 00:06:00.300

    you figure things out

    00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:03.800

    because there are always ways to do that. And I

    00:06:03.800 --> 00:06:06.900

    know that in our yoga that we taught we worked

    00:06:06.900 --> 00:06:09.900

    a lot on strength to make your body stronger. Yes.

    00:06:09.900 --> 00:06:12.500

    We also worked on making our

    00:06:12.500 --> 00:06:15.400

    body more mobile not flexible, but mobile

    00:06:15.400 --> 00:06:18.200

    big difference huge difference. We also

    00:06:18.200 --> 00:06:22.600

    worked on making our lungs our breath stronger

    00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:24.500

    last longer be more

    00:06:24.500 --> 00:06:27.400

    adaptable actually. Yeah, and we

    00:06:27.400 --> 00:06:31.100

    also worked on making our mind through meditation

    00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:33.700

    through different mantras

    00:06:33.700 --> 00:06:36.700

    mudras things like that to be able to stay focused

    00:06:36.700 --> 00:06:39.600

    longer. Yes, so and not be stressed

    00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:42.200

    exactly. So that was our style of

    00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:45.800

    yoga and I know that our style of ayurveda works

    00:06:45.800 --> 00:06:48.400

    a lot again on making giving our body

    00:06:48.400 --> 00:06:50.900

    the right Foods in order to build

    00:06:51.100 --> 00:06:55.200

    Muscle to assist the body in feeding itself

    00:06:54.200 --> 00:06:57.600

    properly to become better mobile to

    00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:00.200

    also give the brain the ability to

    00:07:00.200 --> 00:07:03.800

    become adapt quicker. Yes and to

    00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:06.600

    also become more agile.

    00:07:06.600 --> 00:07:10.500

    I would say yeah. Yeah brain agility.

    00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:13.700

    yeah it's huge and with that Also We

    00:07:13.700 --> 00:07:16.700

    also use astrology. Yes

    00:07:16.700 --> 00:07:19.200

    because astrology I like how you always say

    00:07:19.200 --> 00:07:23.800

    it's a unfit or un Something challenge or

    00:07:23.800 --> 00:07:26.400

    what? It's unfair Advantage. Yeah, that's it.

    00:07:26.400 --> 00:07:30.400

    Yes because it tells you what tomorrow

    00:07:29.400 --> 00:07:32.400

    might be exactly because

    00:07:32.400 --> 00:07:36.200

    it's all based on statistics exactly and statistically this

    00:07:35.200 --> 00:07:38.600

    could happen tomorrow. Yes. It's a

    00:07:38.600 --> 00:07:41.500

    higher statistic and I know that when this

    00:07:41.500 --> 00:07:44.300

    comes out, we're in a pretty s***** time.

    00:07:44.300 --> 00:07:47.400

    Yeah. It's actually rough

    00:07:47.400 --> 00:07:50.700

    time the next few months are pretty rough.

    00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:54.900

    So with that you can actually see it and

    00:07:54.900 --> 00:07:57.600

    work with it and then you it doesn't

    00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:00.900

    affect you and make you more it actually

    00:08:00.900 --> 00:08:03.700

    assists you from not becoming depressed or

    00:08:03.700 --> 00:08:06.600

    not becoming weak or not becoming something because

    00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:09.600

    you already know that it's gonna happen exactly. It's

    00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:12.600

    a like the Marcus Aurelius

    00:08:12.600 --> 00:08:15.500

    meditations, right Marcus Aurelius would get

    00:08:15.500 --> 00:08:18.800

    up every morning and he would tell himself

    00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:21.900

    that his day was gonna consist of

    00:08:21.900 --> 00:08:25.400

    people who were going to try to hurt him

    00:08:24.400 --> 00:08:27.800

    you know, kill him

    00:08:27.800 --> 00:08:30.500

    execute him and all these and he

    00:08:30.500 --> 00:08:33.800

    would also encounter people who were gonna help him all

    00:08:33.800 --> 00:08:37.400

    that stuff. So he was preparing himself

    00:08:36.400 --> 00:08:40.200

    mentally, right? So nothing would

    00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:42.700

    throw him off. That's that's how

    00:08:42.700 --> 00:08:45.700

    I look at astrology. Yeah, and it

    00:08:45.700 --> 00:08:48.800

    gives us the ability to see that okay like today

    00:08:48.800 --> 00:08:51.000

    when we're recording this

    00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:54.500

    It says we shouldn't really be around people right? Yes.

    00:08:54.500 --> 00:08:57.500

    So it's a good day to stay in or

    00:08:57.500 --> 00:09:00.500

    hang out without people around

    00:09:00.500 --> 00:09:03.500

    exactly and if you encounter a

    00:09:03.500 --> 00:09:07.600

    possible confrontation just change

    00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:09.600

    the tune so that it

    00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:10.700

    doesn't escalate that's all it is

    00:09:11.700 --> 00:09:15.100

    So with that you

    00:09:14.100 --> 00:09:16.300

    combine

    00:09:17.400 --> 00:09:20.900

    The yoga we teach along with the ayurveda we teach along

    00:09:20.900 --> 00:09:24.600

    with astrology in order to help you not

    00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:26.400

    become stressed and to get

    00:09:26.400 --> 00:09:29.400

    rid of depression and to help yourself to become

    00:09:29.400 --> 00:09:31.000

    the healthiest

    00:09:31.900 --> 00:09:35.000

    Person that you can be. Yep. And so

    00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:37.500

    with that that's what we're going to be talking in

    00:09:37.500 --> 00:09:40.700

    This series is using those three things. Yes.

    00:09:40.700 --> 00:09:43.200

    Am I correct in using those three things? Yes, absolutely

    00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:46.600

    to be able to be the best You can

    00:09:46.600 --> 00:09:49.000

    be exactly is that an Army commercial be the best you can be

    00:09:49.300 --> 00:09:52.700

    be the best you can be. Well, yep. Actually that's what ayurveda

    00:09:52.700 --> 00:09:55.700

    says, ayurveda says you always wanna be

    00:09:55.700 --> 00:09:58.800

    the best you can be for yourself

    00:09:58.800 --> 00:10:01.700

    and for your community and that's

    00:10:01.700 --> 00:10:04.900

    why we named the podcast also Spartan mind

    00:10:04.900 --> 00:10:07.700

    strength because that was the idea of the Spartans

    00:10:07.700 --> 00:10:10.900

    to be the best You can be not just

    00:10:10.900 --> 00:10:12.200

    for yourself

    00:10:13.500 --> 00:10:16.400

    For yourself within your community.

    00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:21.200

    So ayurveda looks at

    00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:23.600

    looks at everything

    00:10:23.600 --> 00:10:26.800

    you can do within your environment

    00:10:26.800 --> 00:10:29.900

    in order to make your body

    00:10:29.900 --> 00:10:33.000

    mind and emotions healthier.

    00:10:33.800 --> 00:10:37.200

    Because there are always Solutions your

    00:10:36.200 --> 00:10:39.600

    environment gives you but what happens

    00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:42.800

    is most of the time we miss them right?

    00:10:42.800 --> 00:10:46.500

    We don't see them and what charaka

    00:10:45.500 --> 00:10:48.900

    did is he documented as

    00:10:48.900 --> 00:10:51.800

    much as he could from his research

    00:10:51.800 --> 00:10:55.100

    and his travels and everything in order

    00:10:54.100 --> 00:10:57.600

    to give people that information.

    00:10:58.700 --> 00:11:01.900

    Because he could see that people were missing

    00:11:01.900 --> 00:11:04.400

    out on amazing things that

    00:11:04.400 --> 00:11:06.600

    they could be doing that they were not doing.

    00:11:07.900 --> 00:11:10.100

    Okay. Now with that is it

    00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:13.400

    difficult real ayurveda is

    00:11:13.400 --> 00:11:16.400

    very simple. The reason

    00:11:16.400 --> 00:11:20.000

    that real ayurveda is so simple is

    00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:22.900

    because it is a...

    Audio Transcript

    Hello, this is Tim

    And this is Vie and we welcome you to another episode of the spartan mind strength podcast,

    And this is episode 2 of 4 on navaratri.

    Stay tuned. We’ll be right back.

    And we’re back. And we’re going to be talking about navaratri.

    Navaratri, the nine nights, 10 days.

    And when is navratri this year?

    Navaratri, this year starts October 7th.

    So it’s very soon.

    Yes. It’s in a week.

    And each year it’s a little bit different though.

    Yes, because it goes by the Hindu calendar and it’s usually September, October.

    Okay. And, and, and, and, and it’s, it’s related to three goddesses.

    Yes.

    And they are

    Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

    And today’s all about

    It’s about Kali because the first three nights of this nine night - 10 day celebration are dedicated to goddess Kali.

    Yep. And last year we did one on navratri also. So we’ll put that link in for last year’s, because it was also related to

    Ayurveda and Navaratri

    Yes. So now tell me about Kali. Because when I grew up in the seventies, eighties, Kali was basically here in the states was more represented, like, you know, punk rockish like rock and roll and drugs and sex. So it had this weird concept.  And then in some of the old movies with, you know, like, not Batman, but, there were certain ones where Kali was, Kali was like the evil God.

    Yeah.

    But that’s not who Kali is.

    No Kali is actually the most compassionate of all the goddesses. Kali is completely misunderstood because it has to do with, it has to do with the aspect of discipline.

    Kali, Kali makes us look at who we truly are. And most of the time who we truly are, we don’t lie unless we’ve done a  lot of work on ourselves.

    And Kali is also strength.

    Kali is about strength.  Kali, in terms of ayurveda, Kali is all about the aspect of health, physical, emotional, and mental.

    And I know that, in one side of her body, in her hands, she holds everything that gives life. And in the other side in her hands, she has everything that takes lives.

    Exactly, because Kali is all about the, the giving mother and the disciplinarian mother, Kali wants to bring the best out of her children. Kali wants to protect her children. And the only way for Kali to protect her children is making them strong, physically, emotionally, and mentally. And if there is no discipline, how are you going to develop strength, right?

    So if you get mad, because somebody says something that makes you mad, that’s not Kali.

    No, it’s not Kali, that’s your weakness coming out.

    So if you offend me, Kali’s going to be pissed because I got offended.

    No, Kali county is going to be pissed at you, for being - exactly, exactly

    So this world needs a lot more Kali right now.

    Exactly.

    It is so interesting that Kali is actually our dark part and our dark part is what creates our weakness.

    I, I forget who said it, but we were listening to someone yesterday to a really intense scholar. I should remember the name, but he said, that’s actually, I believe it was Nietzsche. I believe it was Nietzsche, who said that our issue is not actually fear as humanity, our issue is laziness.

    Yes, that was Nietzsche.

    That was Nietzsche, ok.

    That we’re more, it’s because we’re lazy is

    Exactly. We are lazy physically, emotionally, and mentally. And that’s who Kali is.

    Is the one that takes that away.

    That takes that away.

    Kali kills, if we allow her to, Kali kills out daemons.  But we need to be able to identify our daemons, right?

    We can’t, we can’t do anything if we can’t identify them.

    So if you see yourself as perfect the way you are, you’re not identifying any daemons.

    No.  Exactly. And just the mere fact that we are humans means we have a shit load of daemons.

    So that’s what Kali does. And, how are you going to be able to see what’s dark in you if you don’t shed some light, righ?

    And so the Navaratri is all about the nighttime, the nine nights.

    Exactly.  Because what the navaratri represents is our battle against our shadows, our battle against our daemons, against our darkness.

    And I know that in one of the stories of Kali is - she was born out of fear, fear of the other gods. The other gods were so afraid, that Kali was born.  Which reminds me of, from the American gods, anger gets shit done.

    Actually it wasn’t out of fear. It was out of anger.

    Out of anger.

    Out of anger, she was created.

    Yes. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva helped create Kali because they were so pissed off, they were so angry at the asuras.

    And then it goes into what, what was his name, it was an African God, oh, I’ll remember his name shortly. but anyways, he said, anger gets shit done.

    Exactly.

    And then the gods after Kali was born, gave her all their weapons that they liked best so that she could fight daemons in all different ways, because your daemons can come in all different forms.

    Anansi, Anansi,  yup. Yup, he was the God from the American gods.

    But anyways, so she received all of these weapons so that she could fight each of the daemons that she runs across and we’re given and the representation of that is we are given all these different weapons through our mind to be able to fight any issue that we need to fight.

    Exactly. But it takes courage. It takes effort. It’s not easy. It's simple, but it’s not easy.

    And the only way you can get shit done is you have to get angry. You can’t see yourself as being perfect. Oh, I’m perfect. I love myself. And then just go back to being who you were. You have to say, yes, I am good, but I can be better. So you have to get that umph to be able to see more, to see yourself to be able to be more.

    Exactly. And that’s one of the things they talk about Kali is,  in the commodity world is, oh Kali helps you get rid of your ego. And everyone talks, all the aspiring yogis, talk about letting go of the ego and all that stuff.

    And what they are doing is feeding their own ego more and more. The spiritual ego is actually the worst thing. And that’s where they talk about, in the symbolism for Kali fighting the daemons, they were saying how when a demon would get killed, a drop of blood would hit earth and then the daemon would become stronger.

    It would be reborn stronger.  And that represents the spiritual ego, as far as you thinking, you got rid of it and now you’ve become this more arrogant person.

    Exactly.  So when a lot of the people start  talking about the ego, oh, it’s your ego or my ego that makes me do this, or that person has to work on their ego and all that, you better run away from them because that means that they have way more issues.

    Because there is nothing - and then they talk about the Western world, cultivating the ego, there is nothing wrong with the ego in the form of confidence.

    Because the good ego gets shit done too.

    Exactly.  We have to be the, we have to be individuals that are able to stand on our own two legs. We have to work independently. We have to get stuff done independently. Otherwise the whole community is going to collapse,

    Yeah. So in, in this type of ego, it’s confidence and it’s the ability to do things where the other ego that they’re talking about is arrogance.

    And literally, and I’ve seen this in so many times, the yoga teacher that all of a sudden learned yoga and then took some courses on meditation or whatever. And now they have this spiritual, I’m better than you because I meditate or I’m better than you because of this. I’m better than you. So they have almost a spiritual arrogance to them.

    Exactly, exactly. And that’s what Kali helps you identify.  Is what you’re doing good for your community? Is what you are doing good for yourself as a valuable part of your community, or are you just fooling yourself?

    So in terms of what we talked about last time, the observed, the observer and the process of observation, Kali identifies with the observed. Kali is the physical, physical body, emotions and mind.

    And from Charaka, it is the --

    It's the health. It’s a desire for health because when Charaka talks about health in ayurveda is holistic, physical, emotional, and mental, they all go together.

    You can’t have one without the other. It’s impossible.

    Now there is a mantra.

    Yes. For Kali. And the mantra is -- oh kreem kalikaya namaha -- oh kreem kalikaya namaha

    And it’s going to be in the notes also.

    So now that you’ve given that, say night night.

    Until next time, much, much love from both of us. Na’maste kala. May we all be well, adapt and thrive.

    Happy Navaratri!  Happy Navaratri!

    Audio Transcript

    Hello, this is Tim and this is Vie. And we welcome you to another episode of the spartan mind strength podcast.

    And this is going to be a four-part episode even though I held five fingers up, four part episode on --

    Navaratri, the nine nights of the goddess.

    Yay.

    Stay tuned. We’ll be right back.

    Navaratri!  Did I say that right?

    Navaratri.  Yes.

    Yay. I can speak Sanskrit.

    So we’re going to be talking about Navratri and it’s nine days, it’s a celebration of the three goddesses. And that is --

    That is Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

    And we know that there’s a lot of different ways to celebrate this. There’s a lot of different concepts behind it, but we’re going to be mainly talking about the ayurvedic concept of it.

    Navaratri.  Yes. And the reason we are talking about it is because the celebration starts October 7th.

    I thought we were talking about it because we just like to talk about it.

    Just because, just for the heck of it. Yes. That’s actually a perfect reason to talk about Navaratri.

    Okay. So explain to me how we’re going to be doing this because I know we’re going to be doing three more parts after this, but, but put it all together for me.

    Okay.  Navaratri celebrates all different aspects of Shakti, of the feminine energy, of the divine, of the mother. The concept of the mother is very important in Vedic tradition. And the reason it is important is because without the mother, there is no existence.

    And I know that not just the Vedic philosophy, every philosophy,  the mother is very important.

    Exactly. We talk about mother earth, we talk about mother universe. We come from the mother, we get our mitochondria from our mother.

    Yeah, and I’ve been called a mother ** many times.

    Exactly. So the concept of the mother is very, very important for our existence.

    Yes.

    Because the father, the male energy is pretty much there. There is, the father, there is no manifestation --

    Without mother.

    Without the mother.

    Mother is the creation.

    Mother is creation. And, in the Vedic tradition mother, the mother can be referred to as Parvati, or Prakruti the primordial creation or Shakti the feminine energy. I’m sure there are a lot of other names. It can even be Maya, right?

    Yes, Maya, because isn’t Maya another word for earth?

    Yes.  Because Maya comes from the root ma and it means to measure forth, which is actually very interesting because our, our experience, the quality of our experience can be measured by our feminine energy.

    It can be measured, but only when we use time and space, which is actually also part of the mother energy.

    Exactly. So we can’t have manifestation as we understand it without time, space and causality.

    And Mom is all those.

    And Mom is all of those, right?  Mom says how long you are going to do certain things for, where you’re going to do them --

    When I have to be back for supper.

    And why you can or cannot do them, right?

    Time-space and causality. It’s very, very interesting. So that’s what Navaratri reminds us of.  That there are all sorts of aspects to our experience, but they all come from the divine feminine energy.

    Okay. And that kicks into ayurveda in a --

    Because ayurveda is all about the experience, right.  Charaka said ayurveda is all about a desire for health --

    Yes.

    A desire for wealth --

    Yes.

    And a desire for the other world.

    Ayurveda is all about the experience. You can look at it as - it’s all about the observed, all about the observer and all about the aspect of the observation, the process of the observation.

    That’s what experience means. Experience, you can’t have an experience -- that’s why Purusha created Prakruti because he couldn’t have an experience without --

    Her.

    Exactly. Without her.

    Again, it goes back to the male is non-experience in the Vedic philosophy.

    In the Vedic tradition, yes, Purusha.

    So, Male is always there, but doesn’t actually experience life, happiness, until Shakti comes.

    Exactly. Until Prakruti comes. Yes.

    So, in the Vedic philosophy, you have to have what is it, Brahma?

    Brahma started it?

    You have to have Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Right. You have to have some process of creation, preservation and dissolution or change.

    It’s all about a cycle. Nothing is linear. And it’s actually all about a cycle at many different levels because back to time, space and causality, it’s just one aspect of it.

    So we need the woman.

    Exactly. Exactly.

    Got to have the Mom.

    Got to have the Mom, got to have Maya, got to have Maya, can’t do without Maya.

    Okay. Now with that, there’s three different steps of Navaratri.

    Yes.

    And the first step is about Kali.

    Kali. The first three nights are dedicated to Kali. The next three are to Lakshmi and the last three are to Saraswati.

    Okay. So the next podcast is going to be all about Kali.

    Yes. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be about Kali Ma or Kali Durga. She’s got many different names.

    And then she leads into the next goddess

    Yes: Lakshmi

    And her, Lakshmi. And then, she does three days also, right?

    Yes.

    And then she leads into --

    Saraswati. But again, it’s not just linear. It’s a cycle. It’s actually a cycle that can be at many different levels. So even though we talk about a cycle, there are still infinite possibilities.

    And the reason why these three goddesses are involved in Navaratri is --

    Because Kali is all about the aspect of the physical, mental, and emotional existence. The right here, right now.

    Kali is about death and rebirth of different aspects. And that’s what we’ll talk about.

    Lakshmi is about creation. It’s all about doing things for the aspect of wealth, right, that comes in many different ways.

    And Saraswati is all about the knowledge that you acquire through that experience. It’s all about learning and remembering.

    It’s almost like Joseph Campbell’s, the --

    The hero’s journey, right, The hero journey.

    Yes.

    So one way to look at Kali is as the observed, right, this physical, mental, and emotional body, this object of observation, our life, what are we doing.

    The way to look at Lakshmi is what you do through the process of observation, right? You have to take action, when you are observing you take action and you do certain things.

    And then the Saraswati represents the observer. Are you able to step back and say, what did I learn through this? What did the process of observation with that particular observed object give me?

    So, in other words, the nine days that we’re getting ready to come into is a great celebration. But in reality, we should be thinking about this every single hour.

    Exactly. Every single minute. That’s how that symbolism, say, those rituals, those traditions are to say, what are you doing from moment to moment And there is no better way to learn, to help you understand your experience than myth, ritual and tradition.

    And with that, this, however you want to call it, is actually a way of living.

    Yes, that’s it, it's a way of life.

    It’s a great way of seeing the world and going into the next level of the world.

    Exactly, exactly.

    Or heaven, whatever you want to call it.

    Whatever the next level of the experience, whatever that is, we should actually say happy navaratri all the time, right?

    I think I’ll do that and say happy navaratri and you say night night.

    Until next time, much, much love from both of us. Na’maste kala.  May we all be well, adapt and thrive

    And Happy Navaratri!

    Audio Transcript

    Hello, this is Tim.

    And this is Vie and we welcome you to another episode of the spartan mind strength podcast.

    And what’s this episode about?

    This episode is about the Upanishads, astrology, ayurveda and of course Ganesha.

    All in 10 minutes?

    All in 10 minutes.

    Awesome.

    Stay tuned. We’ll be right back.

    We’re back. And we’re talking about ayurveda, astrology, the Upanishads and Ganesha.

    That takes almost 10 minutes just to say.

    I know.

    So how are you going to bring all these together?

    Well, first we have to start with Ganesha, right?

    Of course.  Om Gum Ganapataye Namaha.

    Exactly.

    Because it started a couple of days ago.

    Yes. Ganesha Chaturthi.

    Actually, by the time this comes out, it’ll have already started.

    Yes. So Ganesha the elephant headed deity that -

    -- Came from Greece

    Well, from Egypt, through Greece, to India, right?

    He’s very often associated with the root chakra, the elephant. And, we mentioned in the previous episode that the elephant is, can be thought of as the essence of the Kapha bioenergy, right.

    So the root chakra is all about faith in a higher power, right? We've talked extensively about the root chakra that’s associated with faith in a higher power.

    Now, the Upanishads say -

    -- Ok, I’m waiting to hear this

    The Upanishads say that no matter what you do with your existence, right - because the Upanishads are all about the personal experience -

    Yes.

    The individual existence, the individual experience, they say, no matter what you do with it, you have to always keep in mind that everything comes from God and everything returns to God and that’s what unites us all.

    So it’s very, very interesting that the Upanishads highly emphasize that. And that is the faith in a higher power, associated with the root chakra. And that’s where a lot of the confusion happens today. When people get into the spiritual affairs and shoot straight for the third eye.

    Yes. I know. And it still is, on our podcast, the number one out of the chakras for business is always the third eye.

    Exactly.

    Because they know everything else.

    Well, to talk even about a way more realistic example, a couple of days ago, there were three aspiring yogis in the studio talking about third eye imbalances for certain people, and they were completely oblivious to the fact that it all starts from the root chakra.

    Yup. There wouldn’t have been any third eye imbalance if they would have fixed the root chakra.

    So all the aspiring yogis that think they know everything, they have been practicing a couple of years, all of a sudden know that they’re enlightened enough for the third chakra to be the only area that they need -

    -- the third eye to be the only area that they need to work on.

    Exactly. And now you have, you have the whole Vedic literature of the Upanishads talking about, be careful of the root chakra, right, you have other, other world, philosophies and mythologies, right, Joseph Campbell, Joseph Campbell -

    -- who spent almost a lifetime studying

    Exactly, talked about the importance of the root chakra. So you have Ganesha telling you, be grounded -

    -- work on your kapha

    Exactly. But of course, what do they all know?

    What do we know?

    What do we know? So, then the other aspect of the Upanishads is, one of the very, very important teachings, and I’m going to read it because I want it to sound poetic.

    Ok. And of course when you read, you are more poetic.

    Anything that I say from memory doesn’t sound poetic.

    It says - and that comes from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad which is also translated as the tails of the forest.  So it says -

    you are, what your deep driving desire is

    as your desire is, so is your will

    as your will is, so is your deed

    as your deed is, so is your destiny

    So what makes you who you are is your subconscious. It’s not your conscious.  Your conscious is being wasted most of the time, right. It’s your subconscious, your deep, deep, deep driving desire. That’s what creates your destiny. That’s what creates your karma. So when people, again, in the commodity astrology world talk -

    Oh, we’ve just shifted to astrology now, so you had to get that in there.

    But I’m going to bring it all together.

    Ok.

    When they talk -

    Because you’ve even touched on tantra with the root chakra -

    When, when they talk about karma and especially blaming Saturn for that, what they forget is that what our subconscious is, that creates our actions that creates our destiny.

    So what karma - and actually karma in Sanskrit means action - Our actions create our karma. That’s our individuality, right? So we have, being part of something bigger, we have what unites us all. But our individuality comes from our subconscious, from our deep driving desire.

    So no matter what we do, no matter what we do, we all come from God and we go back to God.

    And actually, even Joseph Campbell says that. And each one of us has our own God.

    Exactly.

    So you can’t say your God is, is my God. Because each one of us has our own image of who God is.

    Exactly.  Because God is shaped by our individuality. And that comes from our subconscious, from our deep driving desire.

    Okay. I want to just see if you can do this in less than two minutes, do atheists then, have a God?

    Yes.  They do.  They don’t call it God, but they do have a God. Absolutely.  They totally have a God.  Because they have their individuality and they have their subconscious.

    They may not be aware of it, but they still have a God. And that’s where the awareness comes in.  The awareness depends on the person’s individuality, right? What makes it up to the conscious, that’s where the awareness is.  Are we aware of it?  So how much of your subconscious has actually become conscious.

    Ok.

    And you’ve got to be very careful because when intense parts of our subconscious become conscious, that’s where schizophrenia happens.  And actually Jordan Peterson talks a lot about it, the shadow, right?

    Yes. Yes.

    So you have to be, you have to be very careful what you allow there.  So someone who’s claiming flat out that they are an atheist, they still believe in something, but they -

    -- They refuse to give it a name.

    They refuse to give it a name, whether consciously or subconsciously or unconsciously even.

    Wow.

    They refuse to give it a name.

    You did that very quickly.

    So that's where astrology, Ganesha, ayurveda,  your Kapha and the Upanishads are all telling us, they are actually warning us, that we have to work on our awareness.

    And awareness is at all different levels.

    Exactly.

    Because Ganesha is earthly. He’s the God of all of the people.

    Yes.

    He has so many different representations.

    Yes.

    And isn’t he also the leader of the planets?

    Yes. He’s also, he’s also our intermediary with the planets with the navagrahas, the nine planets, seven plus two. We can talk about that in a different episode.

    He’s also the intermediary with the planets because the people realized that they have, yes, they have to tame nature, they have to appease nature, but there is something out there that they also need to work with.

    So we can actually say that if we’re bringing in awareness, Ganesha is actually the god of ayurvedic awareness.

    He is.  He is the god of ayurvedic awareness. And he operates at many levels.

    Until next time, much, much love from both of us. Na’maste kala!  May we all be well, adapt and thrive.

    Audio Transcript

    Hello, this is Tim.

    And this is Vie and we welcome you to another episode of the spartan mind strength podcast.

    And this is part two of

    Of Ganesha Chaturthi.

    Yay. Stay tuned. We’ll be right back.

    And we are back

    Ganeshaya Vighneshvaraya Namaha!

    Wow. That’s a fancy thing. What did you just say?

    Ganeshaya Vighneshvaraya Namaha!

    But what is that in English?

    So Ganesha, or Ganeshaya, Ganeshaya.is just more poetic. It’s the, the name of Ganesha.

    Vighneshvarara means obstacle remover,

    And that’s what he is.

    And that’s who he is.

    And namaha is hello, how are you doing?

    Ganeshaya Vighneshvaraya Namaha.

    Very nice.

    You can say - thank you Ganesha for removing all the obstacles for me.

    Very nice.

    This is part two of

    Ganesha Chaturthi.

    And what does that mean?

    Well, Ganesha Chaturthi is a huge worldwide celebration for Ganesha. Chaturthi is the fourth day of the new moon of a particular month, the sixth month in the Hindu calendar.

    So it comes from the number four in Sanskrit.

    Okay.

    So the fourth day of the new moon that falls in the sixth month of the Hindu calendar, which is usually our August or September is when they officially celebrate the birthday of Ganesha.

    And this year it is when?

    This year is September 10th.

    Okay. And how long does it go?

    And it goes for 10 to 11 days. So officially the end of the celebration is September 21st this year.

    And what do you do on this holiday for 10 to 11 days?

    You eat a lot of sweets.

    Sweets!

    In honor of Ganesha!

    Yes, because Ganesha is the god of sweets.

    Of sweets. Yes.

    Ganesha has a very, very cute, happy belly. And also he feeds Mushika.

    Mushika is his rat or his mouse, depending on who you talk to.

    Exactly.  He feeds him sweets, eh, you know, accordingly.

    And I know you brought this up before in teacher trainings, Mushika is considered your senses and Ganesha feeds his senses, which is the rat, but he controls them.

    Exactly.

    Ganesha teaches us how to be honoring our senses. So Mushika is the mouse right, the rat, who always likes to gnaw on anything and everything, and he’s all over the place.

    But he also likes to be of service to Ganesha, and they have that awesome relationship that when Ganesha honors Mushika and lets him have his sweets Mushika helps him go places. So if Ganesha just lets Mushika do whatever, eat all he wants, then Mushika is not going to be of much service

    He will go nuts basically,

    Exactly. So it’s that fine line.

    And that’s one of the things that Ganesha teaches us as a -

    As the obstacle remover, right?  In order to be able to move through any obstacles in our life, we have to be honoring our senses.

    And that’s what Ayurveda talks about.

    That’s what Ayurveda talks about.

    That’s the whole representation of the elephant, right?  He, he is, he has the elephant head, right?  That’s the wisdom, that’s the grounding aspect.

    In Ayurveda, when you think Kapha, right, when you think of the earth and water elements, the best representation is the elephant.

    Yes.

    It’s, it’s amazing. It’s that grounding that mother nature provides. So the elephant has that wisdom, right.

    Is heavyweight, right, he stands solid, he stands still, but he also has the finesse and that’s where that trunk comes in, right?

    He supposedly can pick up a feather.

    Exactly.

    So in the last one, we talked a little bit about where he was first brought up and that was in -

    In the Puranas and we gave a little story from the Shiva Purana.

    Now, in your studying of Ganesha, you actually came across some people that were talking about how Ganesha doesn’t represent the normal deities of India, because he has an elephant head and a human body, which represents more of possibly the Egyptian gods and or which is something that I never thought, they talked about it even being a Greek god, so he had the influence of the Greek and the Egyptian, not as much as the Indian,

    Yes, which is fascinating.

    Y. Krishan, that Indian scholar makes the case that the Indian gods were anthropomorphic. So they had human faces and body..

    Human face, human body.

    It’s exactly what you said, that’s his fancy word.

    But the Egyptian gods and then the Hellenistic gods, especially -

    And Hellenistic means greek.

    Hellenistic is the fancy word for Greek.

    And especially the gods that the Indo Greeks brought, when they were in Northwest India fit a lot more the Ganesha profile. Or Ganesha fits that profile I should say.

    And also you talked about coins.

    Yes. They have found coins and the listeners can see pictures of those coins. They have found coins that represent - actually different coins, not just one type from the second century BC  - we are talking 170 BC, 180 BC that have Indo-Greek kings or generals.

    And, they have the elephant head on the obverse side, which the obverse of the coin is the important one.  So they have, they talk about, the general Dimitrios who was in Northwest India in around 180 BC. And they have, they have found a coin with his face, wearing a helmet and having an elephant head, the top of the elephant head on top of the helmet. And then on the reverse side, having the caduceus, the staff with the snake.

    Oh ok.  Yes.

    And then they have found another coin that has Zeus on one side and the other side has an elephant holding the goddess of victory Nike.

    And again, it goes back to the whole thing that cultures talked.

    Cultures gave and took equally.

    Exactly. And the idea is that the elephant throughout those centuries actually was representing mother nature. And the people were trying to actually develop a healthy relationship, understand mother nature. That's why, and obviously they had a lot of elephants in that part of the world, right.

    It’s common sense, right.

    Yes, at least one or two.

    Common sense.  What makes it very interesting is that a little later you have a coin with Shiva and there is great similarities between Shiva and Zeus,

    Yes, there are a lot of similarities.

    And you have Ganesha on one side, son of Shiva, like we said, or the elephant. And then on the other side, you don’t have the goddess Nike, the victory, but you have Ganesha’s brother Kartikeya or Muruga, who happens to be the god of war.

    Which is?

    Which is the male representation now of Nike, right. Because what are the concerns of humanity at that time? Let's appease nature and let’s be victorious in war.

    Yes. So there are a lot of similarities between Nike and Muruga or Kartikeya.

    I like Muruga.

    It's fascinating actually.

    So can we say that Ganesha’s last name could be?

    Elephantakos! Right!

    The greek word for elephant with a special syllable at the end, to make him even more Greek. I will even say, it’s just fascinating to me.

    I knew I liked Ganesha for a reason. I didn’t know we had similar roots.

    That you were related.

    Yeah. It’s all about giving the power to the people, like we already said. That's why Ganesha made it through all those centuries, through all those cultures.

    And he’s even got one of the biggest celebrations.

    It’s one of the biggest celebrations, if  not the biggest.  Everybody loves Ganesha. Ganesha is considered non-sectarian.

    Another big word,

    Another big word.

    And what does that mean?

    It means that it doesn’t matter who you are.  Ganesha loves you and you love Ganesha whether you know it or not.

    Very nice. So say happy birthday to Ganesha,

    Happy Ganesha Chaturthi!  Ganesha, we love you!

    Until next time, much, much love from both of us.

    Na’maste kala! .May we all be well, adapt and thrive.
