WNBA star, Brittney Griner, has been sentenced to 9 1/2 years in jail for having less than 1 gram of marijuana oil in her possession while in Russia.  This antiquated law should be changed. It should be decriminalized, even in Russia.   

This non-violent offense, with no criminal intent, was prescribed in the United States. And despite our differences, Russia should view their current law on medicinal marijuana as shameful, sinful, (un)scrupulous, and just plain stupid.  

Bring BG home should be the rallying cry of every podcast, network, social media post. commercial, and sports broadcast, especially football. 

We need to unify and be one voice in the same way that Bob Barker was at the end of every episode of The Price is Right when he would encourage everyone to have their pets spayed or neutered.  Don't remain silent any longer. It takes less than 5 seconds to say #freebg

Mel Pender who was roommates at the 1968 Olympic games with John Carlos, Joined Hoot for a podcast of epic proportions. Carlos and his teammates executed one of the most famous silent protests in American Sports History along with Tommie Smith and Australian Peter Norman. Pender, who also competed in the 1964 Olympic games, won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 in the 1968 Olympics.

Mel served in the Army for over 20 years and then went to work for the NFL and the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA. He was great friends with the late Hank Aaron as they would go out to lunch 2-3 days a week for years. And you don't want to miss his opinions on Jesse Owens, Bob Knight, and Coach K.

Mel does motivational speaking, is an author, has a documentary coming out and still stays in touch with a number of his teammates from the 1968 squad that has often been referred to as the most talented American track-and-field team in USA Track and Field history.

Along with former 10-Year Major League Baseball star and MLB Hitting Coach, Jacque Jones, San Diego native who attended the University of Southern California, Future Hall-of-Famer, Kenny Lofton, and USA Today writer, Bob Nightengale, we're so honored to welcome on Ruby Bridges' birthday,  one of the most feared power hitters of his era, Rhino, The Big Piece,  Ryan Howard.   

In case you forgot, Ruby Bridges was the first African-American child to desegregate in New Orleans in 1960. (the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on November 14, 1960)  

Ryan played Major League Baseball for 13 years, all with the Philadelphia Phillies.  He  was the fastest major leaguer to 100 home runs, 200 home runs and 1,000 RBI  

He was born the same day as Ted Turner, founder of CNN and former owner of the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks.  

He was born the same year as former Major League Baseball Players Adrien Beltre and Luis Gonzales, His favorite team growing up was the St. Louis Cardinals  

He had 3 All-Star appearances,(2006, 2009, 2010).

And was the first National Leaguer to win the Rookie-of-the-Year award and MVP in back-to-back seasons  

And in 2008, he along with his incredible teammates, won the ultimate team prize, the World Series.  

He's an author of numerous children's books  He's an entrepreneur and investor  He worked for ESPNs Baseball Tonight  

One of his rookie baseball cards is currently going for nearly $400  He's a #girldad  a brother, and a husband  

He has a fraternal twin  He's been on a number of shows including Entourage and The Office

Kate Paye played for and now coaches side-by-side with one of the most legendary women's college basketball coaches in history, Tara VanDerveer. Kate walked-on at Stanford in 1992, after turning down several scholarship offers as well as several Ivy League Schools. And as a freshman, she was a part of the 1992 National Championship team. 

She has her law degree but opted to go into coaching instead, inspired by her big brother who coached her in high school. Together, they brought home three state championships before she went on to star for the Cardinal in Palo Alto. 

Her brother coincidentally was a three-sports star in high school himself (baseball, basketball, and football) and played both football and basketball at Stanford himself. 

Her other sister, mother and father also attended Stanford. Kate was born at Stanford University Hospital as was Kate's two kids. It was just meant to be. Will she be the next Stanford Coach? Time will tell. But for now, she's very happy continuing to learn and be a part of magic every day, working side-by-side to a legend.   

We delve into a number of topics from her upbringing to her time in the ABL and the WNBA to coaching. And you don't want to miss what her favorite cup of java is. 

It was truly an honor to have Kate on the show during our 50th Anniversary of Title IX Celebration Series.

Leslie Knight was taught the ropes by her older brothers in Mennetonka, Minnesota. 

She played all kinds of sports growing up and then opted to play her college ball in the Big 10 for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  

She then received a call from the legendary Barb Smith, former D1 women's basketball coach for 30 years, and current founder of Find My Team who asked her if she wanted to go play overseas and in this episode, you will hear the rest of the story.  

She played her first year in Switzerland and the rest in Spain. 

She is about to give birth to her first child and it was truly an honor to share space with Leslie, our 31st professional women's basketball player or coach to join us in The Sports Deli.

We are so honored to welcome the pride of Brinkley, Arkansas, former Harlem Globetrotter, Herb "Flight Time" Lang.

He's traveled to nearly 90 countries several times and all 50 states as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters for 18 years

His grandmother taught him the meaning of his famous hashtag, #kindnessisfree

He shook hands with Bill Clinton in Middle School

He has 5 sisters and 3 brothers

He's been on the Amazing Race 3x finishing in 4th, 2nd and 6th place, respectfully, clearly creating the best alliances in 2011 during season 18.

He recently did a Ted Talk

He appeared on Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader

He learned so much from his dad, a preacher

He met Pope Francis

He's an author of the book, projects, popes, and presidents

And speaking of Presidents, he met #44, President  Barack Obama twice

He was born the same day as Austin Rivers and 

the same year as, the late Chadwick Boseman, 

He always has found the silver lining in any adversity he's faced and asks himself what can I learn from this, especially during the hard times.

and his mission now since he left his life as a globetrotter in 2017 is to inspire others and pay it forward to make the world a better place for everyone.
