STORY 3: Gwinnett government may opt out of statewide homestead exemption. Here's why.
Gwinnett County officials plan to opt out of a new statewide floating homestead exemption, favoring their existing Value Offset Exemption (VOE) for better tax breaks. The county's decision follows other local governments opting out, with public hearings scheduled before the March 1 deadline. The county's property tax is separate from school and city taxes, which often increase with market values. The VOE has saved homeowners significant amounts, as illustrated by examples from Suwanee and Auburn.
