When the man allegedly pointed the gun at an officer, the officer shot him. The suspect, now in stable condition, was taken to a hospital. STORY 1:  Early Graduate: North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19

Diya Patel, a 19-year-old graduate of Kennesaw State University, earned her psychology degree with honors while balancing a packed schedule of coursework, community contributions, and research. Driven by her dream of becoming a physician, Patel accelerated her studies, taking full course loads year-round to graduate early. She was an active leader on campus, serving as president of the Honors Advisory Leadership Council and founding organizations like the KSU chapter of It’s On Us to combat sexual assault. Patel also engaged in undergraduate research, volunteered with social service groups aiding refugees and unhoused people, and worked at an urgent care facility while honing her multilingual skills. Passionate about education, healthcare, and sustainable development, she aims to continue her global volunteer efforts alongside her medical career, inspired by the diverse, supportive community she found at KSU.

STORY 2:   Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed a 22,000-acre expansion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to protect the area through land purchases or conservation easements with willing landowners. The plan has garnered strong support from environmental advocates, who are urging the FWS to expand even further to permanently block mining projects near the refuge, including a controversial titanium mine by Twin Pines Mineral. Opponents of the mine argue it could harm water levels, wildlife, and the ecosystem, while Twin Pines claims the project would have no negative impact. While the expansion won't directly influence Georgia's permitting decisions, it reflects a broader effort to ensure long-term protection of this vital blackwater swamp. Local and state officials have also rallied in opposition to the mine, calling for stronger safeguards for the swamp's unique environment.

STORY 3: Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award

This week, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office became the first DA's office in the U.S. to receive the Agency Trilogy Award from FBI-LEEDA, recognizing their entire command staff's completion of leadership courses. While many law enforcement agencies have earned this award, Gwinnett's achievement is unique among DA offices. The award highlights their commitment to professional development and leadership, aligning with DA Patsy Austin-Gatson's vision for serving the community. The training, which can be completed in about a month, enhances leadership skills and ethics, benefiting the office and its investigators.

Inspired by her experience and the young man responsible for the crash, she enrolled in political science to understand and potentially reform the justice system. Rantamaki's journey highlights the importance of community support and her desire to contribute positively, aiming to work with nonprofits aiding young or incarcerated individuals.

The 42nd annual 11Alive Can-A-Thon, organized by the Salvation Army of Gwinnett County in partnership with Publix and 11Alive, aims to address food insecurity for families in need. Taking place Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event follows last year's success of collecting over 203,000 cans. With one in eight Georgians facing hunger, this initiative supports ongoing efforts during Christmas and beyond. Donations of canned proteins, vegetables, soups, and low-sugar or low-salt items are encouraged, while glass jars and baby food are not accepted. Drop-off locations include sites in Lawrenceville, Marietta, Decatur, Fayetteville, and Southwest Atlanta, or donors can contribute online at www.salvationarmyatlanta.org.

STORY 2:   Doug Ingram wins Mulberry District 5 runoff

Doug Ingram won the Mulberry City Council District 5 runoff election, defeating Michele Y. Sims by 67 votes. He secured 309 votes, or 56%, compared to Sims' 242. The results remain unofficial until certified by Gwinnett County's elections board. As the council works to establish the city's government with weekly meetings, Ingram is expected to join his first meeting on Dec. 10.

STORY 3: Seeking a new way of life under the sea - and a world record

His home features essentials like a bed, toilet, TV, and internet, though it lacks a shower. Beyond breaking Joseph Dituri's 100-day underwater record, Koch aims to prove the viability of living and expanding human life under the sea. The capsule doubles as an artificial reef, benefiting marine life. Despite challenges like storms, Koch is supported by a team above water and is linked to the "seasteading" movement, advocating for ocean-based communities. Once resurfaced, his first plan is a much-anticipated shower.

Gwinnett County finalized the $16.5 million purchase of the Macy's department and furniture store properties at the former Gwinnett Place Mall, adding to the county's existing ownership of much of the mall's property. This acquisition supports plans to redevelop the site into a mixed-use "global villages" concept featuring residential, retail, green space, and a cultural center. Macy's will continue operating through the 2024 holiday season under a leaseback agreement. The county is now focused on finding development partners, with plans to issue a request for proposals in early 2025, aiming to create a revitalized urban hub and boost economic opportunities in the area.

Serving as a resident assistant, and later senior RA, she fostered a sense of belonging in student housing, supporting peers through struggles like mental health challenges and homesickness. Her leadership extended to serving as president of the Greenlight Activities Board, where she worked to create meaningful campus events and strengthen student connections. She plans to gain professional experience and pursue graduate studies after graduation.

Ngo balanced her demanding studies with work at two restaurants, using careful planning and time management. Inspired by her parents’ hard work as Vietnamese immigrants, she paid her way through college, avoided debt, and helped with family expenses. On graduation day, she’ll wear a traditional Vietnamese áo dài to honor her heritage. After graduation, she aims to pursue a career in data analysis or software engineering, driven by persistence and determination for success.

STORY 1: John Berry Opens Christmas Tour Friday In Sugar Hill

For the 28th year, country music star John Berry is launching his "Christmas with John Berry" tour, starting on Nov. 29 at The Eagle Theatre in Sugar Hill, a traditional opening venue. The 14-date tour includes familiar cities and new stops like Cowan, Tennessee. Berry, an Atlanta native with a four-decade career, continues to thrive despite past health challenges. He enjoys the tour's camaraderie, performing a mix of his hits and Christmas classics. Berry plans to record a new album next year and remains active in music production and charity work.

STORY 2:   Three Gwinnett schools are getting new principals. Here's what we know.

The Gwinnett County Board of Education has appointed new principals for Harmony Elementary, McClure Health Science High, and Twin Rivers Middle schools. Emily W. Nelson, previously Harmony's assistant principal, will replace retiring principal Jonathan Day. Gypsy Hernandez, former principal at Coleman Middle School, will take over at McClure, succeeding Nicole Mosley. Quincy L. Wallace, assistant principal at Lanier High School, will replace Betsy Kelly at Twin Rivers. These appointments, nominated by Superintendent Calvin Watts, bring experienced leaders with diverse educational backgrounds to their new roles.

STORY 3: Man Shot In Hand After Chase With Gwinnett County Police

In unincorporated Norcross, a Gwinnett County police officer shot a man during a foot chase on Friday night. The incident occurred near Dawson Boulevard and McDonough Drive NW when officers on a crime suppression detail attempted to speak with the man, who fled. During the chase, the man dropped a gun, ignored the officer's warning not to pick it up, and was shot in the hand. He later surrendered and was hospitalized. The officer was unharmed. The investigation is ongoing, and police are seeking information from the public, with Crime Stoppers offering a reward for tips leading to an arrest.
