Georgia environmental regulators revoked a permit for a wood pellet plant in Telfair County after a legal challenge by the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC). The revocation, requested by the company, led SELC to withdraw its legal challenge. Environmentalists criticized the initial approval, highlighting air quality concerns, while industry supporters argue that wood pellet plants provide jobs in rural areas. The biomass industry is significant in Georgia, with pellets exported for power generation in Europe and Asia.

Hall completed 8 of 17 passes for 138 yards and added 80 rushing yards. Norcross' Dillon Mohammed threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, but their comeback fell short. North Gwinnett will host the first playoff round, while Norcross aims for the No. 2 seed.

STORY 1:  Norcross Grad Alvin Kamara Signs 2-year, $24.5M Extension with Saints

Alvin Kamara, a Norcross graduate, is staying with the New Orleans Saints after signing a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension, keeping him with the team through 2026. Despite rumors of a trade, Kamara denied wanting to leave. The extension helps the Saints save about $18 million against the salary cap in 2025. Kamara, who has been with the Saints since being drafted in 2017, has had a successful career, including being named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and making five Pro Bowls. This season, he has 438 rushing yards, six touchdowns, and 34 receptions for 252 yards.

STORY 2:  Gwinnett Schools Scales Back on Clear Book Bag Rule. Here's Why

Gwinnett County Public Schools is facing criticism for purchasing clear book bags for students before gathering feedback from parents on a proposed requirement for their use. Initially planned for all schools, the policy is now a pilot program at select schools. Critics, like Steve Smith, argue the district moved forward with a $1.3 million purchase before the survey was completed. The clear bags are a response to a recent school shooting, but opinions are divided: 50.7% of parents oppose the bags, while 87% of students are against them. STORY 1: Gwinnett voters must decide who they want as their sheriff

Gwinnett County voters face a choice on November 5 between re-electing Sheriff Keybo Taylor or choosing Republican challenger Mike Baker. Taylor, the first Democrat in decades to hold the office, has focused on mental health, human trafficking, and gang issues, replacing the controversial 287(g) immigration program. He aims to continue these reforms if re-elected. Baker, a former deputy featured on "Live PD," criticizes Taylor's handling of deputy retention and morale. He pledges to reinstate the Jail Dogs program and improve crime-fighting collaboration with other agencies, emphasizing public safety and crime reduction.

STORY 2:   A Sweet Time: Sugar Rush Arts Festival Set To Entertain This Weekend

The Sugar Rush Arts Festival in Sugar Hill promises a fun-filled weekend with over 100 vendors, live music, and activities for kids. The event kicks off Friday night with the Nightmare On Broad Street Film Festival and a free concert featuring Mixtape and Gimme Springsteen. On Saturday and Sunday, attendees can enjoy art, food, inflatables, and live performances. A Gwinnett County fire engine crew responded to a car accident at Buford Highway and Davenport Road, only for their fire truck to be sideswiped by another vehicle while they were assisting at the scene. This incident unfolded right in front of the Duluth Police Department Headquarters, adding to the chaos. The initial crash happened when a vehicle made a left turn in front of another. Fortunately, no firefighters were injured, but the intersection was temporarily closed, causing traffic delays as first responders managed the scene.

STORY 5:  There are 20 legislative races on the ballot in Gwinnett

In the upcoming November 5 election, about two-thirds of Gwinnett County's legislative seats are contested. Out of 31 seats in the Georgia General Assembly, 20 are up for grabs. Key races include State Senate District 48, where indicted incumbent Shawn Still faces Ashwin Ramaswami, and House District 105, with Farooq Mughal against Sandy Donatucci. Notable unopposed candidates include Chuck Efstration and Arlene Beckles. The election features several races with significant implications, such as those involving Gwinnett's Muslim legislators and efforts to shift district political balances.

The Gwinnett County Commission District 1 race highlights key issues like public safety and housing affordability. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and her opponent John Sabic debate housing and development strategies. In District 3, Jasper Watkins III and Bobby Howard prioritize public safety and fiscal responsibility. The outcomes will influence the commission's approach to these critical issues.

STORY 7:  Buford Reunion: Texas WR Isaiah Bond, Georgia DB K.J. Bolden Meet Saturday

In the upcoming college football clash between No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Georgia, Texas' offensive success may depend on junior receiver Isaiah Bond's health. Bond, a key player with 369 yards and three touchdowns this season, is questionable due to an ankle injury. Georgia coach Kirby Smart acknowledges Bond's explosive talent, noting his speed and agility. If Bond plays, he might face former Buford teammate K.J. Bolden, a freshman defensive back for Georgia with impressive stats. STORY 1:  Celebration To Honor Mall of Georgia's 25th Anniversary

The Mall of Georgia is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a party featuring vendors, live music, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will include city representatives and Gwinnett Chamber members. Since opening in 1999, the mall has been a popular shopping and dining destination, known for its unique shopping village and historic murals. It continues to expand with new businesses. Erika Bridges, the mall's marketing director, expressed gratitude for community support. Owned by Simon Property Group, the mall remains a key part of regional growth.

STORY 2:  Georgia Gwinnett College discovers bacteria in Joro spider

Joro spiders, first spotted in Georgia a decade ago after arriving from Asia, are most visible in September and lay eggs by mid-October. Dr. James Russell and student Nicholas Mizera from Georgia Gwinnett College discovered that Joro spiders are infected with Wolbachia, a common bacteria in insects. While Joro spiders can't transmit Wolbachia to humans, the bacteria may cause reproductive barriers in spiders, potentially useful for population control. This concept could extend to other insects like mosquitoes. Mizera's research experience confirmed his passion for biology, and he plans to pursue a doctorate. Russell and Mizera are preparing a paper on their findings.

STORY 3: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 10 Years of Impact

Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its "A Brush with Kindness" program, which provides critical home repairs and modifications for income-eligible homeowners in Gwinnett and Walton counties. Executive Director Brent Bohanan credits the program's success to community partnerships and volunteer efforts. Over the past decade, the initiative has restored over 300 homes, improving safety and living conditions for senior citizens, veterans, and families in need. The program focuses on essential repairs like exterior painting and accessibility improvements, enhancing community strength and preserving homeownership. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressed gratitude for the honor, highlighting the stadium's capability to host major events. This will be Atlanta's fourth Super Bowl, with previous games held in 1994, 2000, and 2019. The successful bid was led by the Atlanta Sports Council and various local organizations. Atlanta is also set to host other major events, including the College Football Playoff National Championship and FIFA World Cup. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised the decision, emphasizing Atlanta's readiness to host large-scale events.

STORY 5:   Gwinnett Issues Bonds to Buy Mall Macy's Stores. What We Know

Gwinnett County is advancing its redevelopment plans for the former Gwinnett Place Mall by purchasing the Macy’s department and furniture stores for $16.5 million, with the deal closing in November. The county issued bonds at a 4.7% interest rate, raising $17.2 million, and received a AAA bond rating, which Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson highlighted as beneficial for taxpayers. This acquisition adds 23 acres to the county's holdings, totaling 76 acres, and enhances redevelopment flexibility. The "Global Villages" concept will guide the mall's transformation, with most of it being demolished, except for existing anchors. Development partner proposals are expected in early 2025.
