STORY 1: Gwinnett Father Found Guilty Of Child Cruelty In Death Of His 8-Year-Old Daughter
A Gwinnett County jury convicted Cledir Barros of second-degree child cruelty in the death of his 8-year-old daughter, Sayra Barros. Barros, 38, was sentenced to 10 years, with eight years in prison and two on probation, for allowing his wife to abuse Sayra, culminating in her death. This conviction follows two previous mistrials. Barros was aware of the abuse since August 2022 but failed to protect Sayra, even withdrawing her from school to avoid scrutiny. On the incident day, Sayra's stepmother, charged with murder, allegedly beat her with a rolling pin. Barros is prohibited from contacting his remaining children during his sentence.
STORY 2: Gwinnett Teen On The Run After Armed Robbery In Buford
Gwinnett County Police are seeking public help to find Jay-Lan Broughton, a 17-year-old from Duluth, accused of multiple armed robberies in Buford. On May 24, police responded to a robbery at the 6000 block of Apple Grove Road, where victims reported being robbed of jewelry, a debit card, air pods, and a license by a gunman and accomplices. Investigators linked another suspect, Edmond Buggs, 17, to the crime after his arrest for a separate robbery. Buggs identified Broughton as the armed assailant, confirmed through video surveillance. Broughton is reportedly still armed and may be hiding in Gwinnett County. STORY 3: Georgia Gwinnett College to host preview days
Georgia Gwinnett College is hosting fall preview days on Saturday, September 28, and Saturday, November 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. These events offer prospective students the chance to explore the campus, meet professors and current students, and learn about academic programs, housing, and financial aid. Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact with GGC's mascot, General. Additionally, the college is offering a free application week from September 25 to October 4. Dr. Michael Poll emphasizes that these events provide a personalized glimpse into the college experience from application to graduation.

STORY 5: Great Niece Of Famous Doctor Returns To Cambodia As Part Of PCOM GA Mission Trip
Brooke Demetri, a medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, is dedicated to continuing the humanitarian legacy of her great uncle, Dr. Haing S. Ngor, who survived Cambodia's Khmer Rouge and won an Oscar for "The Killing Fields." This summer, Demetri participated in a mission trip to Cambodia, providing medical services to around 500 patients, inspired by her uncle's commitment to rebuilding Cambodia and supporting those affected by the genocide. A New York native with a degree in neuroscience, she also founded the Healing Hope Project to tackle mental health issues. Despite never meeting Ngor, Demetri feels a deep connection to her family's history and is pursuing a medical career in pediatrics, reflecting her uncle’s passion for giving back.

Dr. Hal Herd, Gwinnett County's first full-time pediatrician, began his transformative role in local healthcare in 1974. Initially operating solo, he founded Gwinnett Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, P.C. in 1982, which grew significantly with multiple offices and a large team. Herd was pivotal in establishing neonatal services, a pediatric unit, and introducing digital records at Gwinnett Medical Center. STORY 2: Mountain View grad serves with Navy electronic attack squadron
Airman Hector Bahenaortiz, a 2022 Mountain View High School graduate, is currently serving in the U.S. Navy with Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. As an aviation electronics technician, Bahenaortiz helps train aircrew on the EA-18G Growler, a key aircraft for electronic warfare. He joined the Navy to forge his own path and values the hard work and resilience learned from his hometown. The Navy emphasizes the importance of recruiting skilled individuals like Bahenaortiz to ensure national security and prosperity.
STORY 3: Hebron Christian, Blessed Trinity Team Up for Apalachee Fundraiser
On Friday, Sept. 20, Hebron Christian Academy and Blessed Trinity Catholic High School will host a fundraiser during their football game to support the victims of the recent Apalachee High School shooting. Donations can be made through a live link starting at 6 p.m., with QR codes around the stadium for easy access. Funds raised will assist the families of the victims. The Ride Gwinnett microtransit pilot program launched in Norcross on August 26, offering on-demand, shared-ride service to enhance mobility in the area. This initiative, a collaboration between Gwinnett County, Gateway85 Community Improvement District, and the city of Norcross, follows similar services in Snellville and Lawrenceville. The program operates Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with rides costing $3. It aims to improve transportation access for residents and businesses, particularly for the 14,000 people in the Gateway85 CID without cars. STORY 1: Father of alleged Apalachee High School shooter arrested
Colin Gray, the father of Colt Gray, the 14-year-old accused of a deadly school shooting at Apalachee High School, faces multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children for allegedly allowing his son to possess a weapon. Colt Gray is charged with felony murder for the shooting that killed four people, including two students and two teachers, and injured nine others. The shooting has deeply affected the Winder community, leading to vigils and calls for support. Investigations are ongoing, with federal and state officials involved. STORY 2: Apalachee High School Staff Used Crisis Badge System Also Used in Gwinnett Schools
The Centegix CrisisAlert badge system, recently implemented in Barrow County Schools, was put to the test during the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School. The system, which Gwinnett County Public Schools began using last year, allows staff to alert administrators and law enforcement to emergencies by pressing a button on their badges. In Barrow County, the system helped quickly trigger a lockdown and alert responders, potentially limiting the tragedy. The shooting, which resulted in four deaths and nine injuries, highlighted the system's effectiveness in enhancing school safety and response.

Principal Jimmy Fisher communicated that the decision is made out of respect for the tragedy and to support the affected community.

STORY 2: This Peachtree Corners-based company just surveyed the Titanic wreck — Here's what it found
A recent dive to survey the RMS Titanic wreck by Peachtree Corners-based RMS Titanic Inc. yielded mixed results. The positive news was the rediscovery of the ship's bronze "Diana of Versailles" statue, last seen in 1986. However, the survey also revealed significant deterioration, notably the loss of a key portion of the ship’s bow railing, a prominent feature in media representations and the 1997 film *Titanic*. This railing, seen in place as recently as 2022, is now on the sea floor next to the ship. The survey, involving over 2 million high-resolution images and advanced mapping technologies, underscores the fragility of the Titanic wreck. Harris, the youngest athlete at the event, clocked a 400-meter split of 52.05 seconds, surpassing her own Gwinnett County high school record and edging out Georgia’s all-time high school mark. In a recent two-day sting operation, Gwinnett Sheriff's Office deputies arrested two men from Jackson and Dacula, Yash Patel, 28, and Jacob Stipcak, 39, for allegedly sending obscene materials to an undercover investigator posing as a 14-year-old girl. Patel, arrested on August 19, faces charges including Obscene Internet Contact with a Child and Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony. Stipcak, arrested the following day, faces similar charges. Both men are accused of sending explicit photos and trying to arrange sexual encounters. The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office emphasizes its commitment to protecting children and combating exploitation.

Jesus Monroy, a 20-year-old Snellville man, was released on $56,000 bond after being charged with the murder of his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, Mia Campos, and her unborn child. Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers set the bond, which led to Monroy's release early Thursday. He faces charges including malice murder, feticide, and aggravated assault related to Campos' death on July 14. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office announced 47 arrests connected to the Surenos gang after a nine-month investigation. STORY 3: Lawrenceville Teen Earns Girl Scout Gold Award By Helping Pediatric Patients
Sarah Gruber, a Lawrenceville Girl Scout, used her Girl Scout Gold Award project to aid hospitalized children by donating 17 handmade IV lily pads to Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital in Memphis. These lily pads, which she designed and crafted over 500 hours, help pediatric patients move more easily with their IVs. Gruber also created 525 coloring kits for the children. Her project not only supports the hospital but also teaches other teens to replicate the effort in their communities. The Gold Award honors Scouts who create impactful, sustainable projects, and Gruber’s work will enhance the hospital experience for young patients.

STORY 1: Gov. Brian Kemp Endorses Donatucci In Gwinnett House Race
Sandy Donatucci, the GOP nominee for Georgia House District 105, received a major boost with an endorsement from Governor Brian Kemp. Donatucci is challenging incumbent Rep. Farooq Mughal, D-Dacula, aiming to reclaim the seat for Republicans, who have not held it since 2016. Kemp praised Donatucci's commitment to cutting taxes, enhancing public safety, and fully funding schools. Donatucci, who recently resigned from the Gwinnett County Planning Commission to focus on her campaign, expressed her gratitude for Kemp's support and emphasized her dedication to addressing cost-of-living issues, supporting law enforcement, and improving education.
STORY 2: Providence Christian Grad Bailey Moody Ready for Paralympics
Bailey Moody, a 22-year-old wheelchair basketball player from Johns Creek, is set to make her second Paralympic appearance at the 2024 Games in Paris. After helping Alabama win the NWBA women’s championship in March, Moody, who earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, is excited for a better experience this time without COVID restrictions. Her family of 14 will be attending the Games, and Moody is confident in Team USA’s chance for gold. Despite not being a starter, she is committed to contributing in any way needed. Moody plans to return to Alabama for graduate studies in clinical mental health counseling after the Games and aims for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.
STORY 3: Gwinnett planning $35 million human services building with unique mental health component
Gwinnett County will start construction early next year on a $35 million Health and Human Services facility named OneStop Gwinnett. The three-story center, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, will be the first in the county to offer inpatient mental health services, including a 30-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit, alongside veterans and family services, job skills training, and community classes. The facility, located on Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville, will also house View Point Health’s behavioral health services and a command center for the county’s Community Navigator Team. Construction is set to begin in January 2025.

STORY 4: ESPN Win: Grayson Beats Thompson on Gutsy 2-Point Run
In a dramatic finish, Grayson defeated Thompson 15-14 in overtime with a two-point conversion play. With the game tied, Grayson head coach Santavious Bryant opted for a jumbo package and running back Elijah Miller scored the game-winning conversion after a touchdown pass from Travis Burgess to Aiden Taylor. The game, broadcast on ESPN2, featured strong defensive performances from both teams. Grayson, despite being scoreless in the second half, controlled the ball with a powerful rushing attack, gaining 199 yards compared to Thompson's 40. The victory marked Grayson's first win of the season after a close loss in their opener.
STORY 5: Gwinnett Teen Selling Discount Cards To Raise Money To Help Kids Battling Cancer
Peachtree Corners teen Lex Stolle, a cancer survivor, is raising funds for research with his Cancer Card project. Stolle, diagnosed with leukemia at 10, created discount cards for businesses to benefit cancer research while offering savings to cardholders. His 2023 campaign raised $8,075 with 323 cards sold and included 50 businesses across five cities. For this year's campaign starting September 1, he aims to raise $11,000 and has shifted focus from Buckhead to Dunwoody. Stolle also shares stories of young patients through his radio show and plans to pursue a career in politics. The funds will support both research and emotional support for cancer patients.

STORY 6: Brookwood High Grad Serves With Navy Electronic Attack Squadron
Petty Officer 3rd Class Grant Barry, a 2020 Brookwood High School graduate from Lawrenceville, serves with Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. As an aviation structural mechanic (safety equipment), Barry's diverse upbringing in Lawrenceville has helped him build strong relationships in the Navy. He chose the Navy over college, inspired by family military service. VAQ-142 operates the EA-18G Growler for electronic warfare. Barry's recent deployment taught him a lot, and he's proud of his service. He values the personal growth and relationships he's gained, including meeting his wife, Natalie.
STORY 7: Gwinnett Schools Earn National Recognition For Student Data Protections
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has earned the full Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal from CoSN, recognizing its high standards for student data privacy. GCPS is one of only 20 districts nationwide to receive this seal and the only one in Georgia alongside Fulton County Public Schools. The TLE Seal requires rigorous privacy policies covering leadership, data security, and professional development. GCPS also became the first to transition from the "Mini Seal" to full seal status. This achievement underscores GCPS’s commitment to protecting student information and maintaining a secure learning environment.
