Sandy Donatucci, the GOP nominee for Georgia House District 105, received a major boost with an endorsement from Governor Brian Kemp. Donatucci is challenging incumbent Rep. Farooq Mughal, D-Dacula, aiming to reclaim the seat for Republicans, who have not held it since 2016. Kemp praised Donatucci's commitment to cutting taxes, enhancing public safety, and fully funding schools. STORY 2: Providence Christian Grad Bailey Moody Ready for Paralympics
Bailey Moody, a 22-year-old wheelchair basketball player from Johns Creek, is set to make her second Paralympic appearance at the 2024 Games in Paris. After helping Alabama win the NWBA women’s championship in March, Moody, who earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, is excited for a better experience this time without COVID restrictions. Her family of 14 will be attending the Games, and Moody is confident in Team USA’s chance for gold. Despite not being a starter, she is committed to contributing in any way needed. Moody plans to return to Alabama for graduate studies in clinical mental health counseling after the Games and aims for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.
STORY 3: Gwinnett planning $35 million human services building with unique mental health component
Gwinnett County will start construction early next year on a $35 million Health and Human Services facility named OneStop Gwinnett. The three-story center, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, will be the first in the county to offer inpatient mental health services, including a 30-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit, alongside veterans and family services, job skills training, and community classes. The facility, located on Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville, will also house View Point Health’s behavioral health services and a command center for the county’s Community Navigator Team. Construction is set to begin in January 2025.

STORY 4: ESPN Win: Grayson Beats Thompson on Gutsy 2-Point Run
In a dramatic finish, Grayson defeated Thompson 15-14 in overtime with a two-point conversion play. With the game tied, Grayson head coach Santavious Bryant opted for a jumbo package and running back Elijah Miller scored the game-winning conversion after a touchdown pass from Travis Burgess to Aiden Taylor. The game, broadcast on ESPN2, featured strong defensive performances from both teams. Grayson, despite being scoreless in the second half, controlled the ball with a powerful rushing attack, gaining 199 yards compared to Thompson's 40. The victory marked Grayson's first win of the season after a close loss in their opener.
STORY 5: Gwinnett Teen Selling Discount Cards To Raise Money To Help Kids Battling Cancer
Peachtree Corners teen Lex Stolle, a cancer survivor, is raising funds for research with his Cancer Card project. Stolle, diagnosed with leukemia at 10, created discount cards for businesses to benefit cancer research while offering savings to cardholders. His 2023 campaign raised $8,075 with 323 cards sold and included 50 businesses across five cities. For this year's campaign starting September 1, he aims to raise $11,000 and has shifted focus from Buckhead to Dunwoody. Stolle also shares stories of young patients through his radio show and plans to pursue a career in politics. The funds will support both research and emotional support for cancer patients.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Grant Barry, a 2020 Brookwood High School graduate from Lawrenceville, serves with Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. As an aviation structural mechanic (safety equipment), Barry's diverse upbringing in Lawrenceville has helped him build strong relationships in the Navy. He chose the Navy over college, inspired by family military service. VAQ-142 operates the EA-18G Growler for electronic warfare. Barry's recent deployment taught him a lot, and he's proud of his service. He values the personal growth and relationships he's gained, including meeting his wife, Natalie.
STORY 7: Gwinnett Schools Earn National Recognition For Student Data Protections
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has earned the full Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal from CoSN, recognizing its high standards for student data privacy. GCPS is one of only 20 districts nationwide to receive this seal and the only one in Georgia alongside Fulton County Public Schools. The TLE Seal requires rigorous privacy policies covering leadership, data security, and professional development. GCPS also became the first to transition from the "Mini Seal" to full seal status. This achievement underscores GCPS’s commitment to protecting student information and maintaining a secure learning environment.

STORY 1: Man convicted of killing 17-year-old during botched drug robbery
Jaiden Williams, 20, has been sentenced to life in prison for the July 26, 2021, murder of 17-year-old Orbit Pough III during a failed drug robbery in Grayson. Convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, and other charges, Williams will serve life with the possibility of parole and an additional five year probation. Williams met Pough under false pretenses, intending to rob him at gunpoint. During the encounter, Williams fatally shot Pough, who was also armed, and returned fire, injuring Williams and causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down.
STORY 2: Gwinnett investigators work led to RICO charges against thieves
Gwinnett County police investigator Cpl. Jimmy Wilson was honored with the Partnership of The Year award by the Georgia Retailers Organized Crime Alliance on August 7. Wilson's investigation dismantled a multi-million-dollar criminal operation that was selling stolen goods online. His work led to the recovery of tens of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise and resulted in RICO charges against the thieves. Wilson’s efforts included jail interviews, collaborating with retail investigators, and executing search warrants to recover the stolen items.
STORY 3: Vertical construction begins on Sugarloaf Parkway townhome development
Parkland Residential has begun vertical construction on Sugarloaf Landing, a 114-unit stacked townhome development at 3440 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville. The project will offer two- and three-bedroom units, starting at $2,400 per month, with sizes ranging from 1,600 to 1,950 square feet. Expected to start leasing in October, the development will feature amenities like a swimming pool, playground, and nature preserve, with maintenance and appliances included. STORY 4: Prosecutors: Norcross-area man claimed to be a 'patriot' when he shot immigrant in the head
Jorge Alberto Ramirez, 35, from unincorporated Norcross, has been sentenced to life in prison for the April 14, 2021, murder of 23-year-old Pedro Lopez-Belloso. Ramirez was convicted on multiple charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault, after fatally shooting Lopez-Belloso in the back of the head in an SUV on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Ramirez, who claimed he acted out of a misguided sense of patriotism, initially argued that the shooting was accidental but later admitted intent. He received an additional five years on his life sentence.
STORY 5: Northside Hospital introduces AI-powered colonoscopy
Northside Hospital is enhancing colorectal cancer prevention with new AI technology. The GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module, the first FDA-approved computer-aided polyp detection system, was introduced on August 14. This AI-assisted colonoscopy tool helps detect potentially precancerous polyps more effectively by highlighting them in real-time, acting as a second set of eyes for endoscopists. Available at all five Northside hospitals and six outpatient centers, including Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Duluth, this technology aims to improve early detection and prevent colorectal cancer, which is highly curable when caught early. Regular screenings starting at age 45 are recommended, with earlier testing for those at higher risk.

STORY 1: Eminent Domain Battle Brewing Between Norcross and Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation
The Norcross Woman's Club and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation are in dispute with the City of Norcross over the future of the club's historic building, which was recently donated to the Trust. The city plans to consider a condemnation resolution on September 3, initiating the eminent domain process. While the city insists this move is not intended for demolition, the Georgia Trust is concerned that it could jeopardize the building's preservation. The Trust aims to restore the building and convert it into a private residence with preservation easements, but the city prefers a public use for the structure. The building, originally Gwinnett County's first library and designed with Greek Revival architecture, remains a point of contention.
STORY 2: Three Gwinnett Grads Named AP Football Preseason All-Americans
Three former Gwinnett prep stars have been named to the Associated Press preseason All-American Team. Caleb Downs, a safety for Ohio State, was previously an All-American at Alabama and leads the defense. Barrett Carter, a linebacker at Clemson, is also on the first-team defense, known for his impressive stats and All-ACC selection. STORY 3: Buford's Neely Kerr Headed to Colombia with US U-20 World Cup Team
Neely Kerr, a senior at Buford, received exciting news that disrupted her school year: she was selected as one of three alternates for the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Soccer Team for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Initially listed as a provisional roster member, Kerr was called up after an injury opened a spot. She'll complete her schoolwork online from Colombia through early September. STORY 4: ON THE RISE: Georgia Gwinnett College Enrollment Increases For 7th Straight Semester
Georgia Gwinnett College is set to increase its fall enrollment by 2.1%, surpassing 12,000 students for the seventh consecutive semester. The majority of students are from Gwinnett County, but the college also attracts students from across the U.S. and 116 countries, with Vietnam, Nigeria, Venezuela, Mexico, and India being the top five. Dr. Michael Poll, VP of Enrollment Management, credits this growth to strong collaboration among staff and a focus on student success and retention, which has led to a 4% increase in returning students.
STORY 5: Pearl Harbor Hero To Be Laid To Rest
On December 7, 1941, U.S. Navy Fireman 2nd Class Joseph William Carroll perished aboard the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Of the 429 crewmen lost, 388 remained unidentified until recent efforts began to exhume and identify remains. By August 19, 2019, Carroll was among those identified. His remains will be interred at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu on August 21, 2024. Carroll’s cousin, Nancy Leigh Carroll De La Cruz, will attend the ceremony, honoring his sacrifice and placing him to rest alongside his fellow sailors. This closure follows 77 years of uncertainty, highlighting the Navy's dedication to identifying and honoring fallen service members.

STORY 1: Police K-9 pursues suspect accused of attacking ex-girlfriend
Javaris Virgin, 30, from Lawrenceville, faces multiple charges including false imprisonment and obstruction following two altercations with his ex-girlfriend. On July 29, Virgin allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, damaging her phone and injuring her wrist, but left before police arrived. On August 10, he returned, assaulted her again, and fled from police, leading to a brief foot chase. Police K9 Nitro and handler Sgt. Doan tracked Virgin, who was eventually found hiding in bushes and arrested. Virgin is held in Gwinnett County Jail on a $10,350 bond.
STORY 2: 'The Color Purple' kicks off Aurora Theatre's 29th season
Candy McLellan, director of Aurora Theatre's “The Color Purple: The Musical,” brings a deep personal connection to the production, having grown up with the story through the 1985 film and novel by Alice Walker. The musical opens Aurora’s 29th season, themed “Feast for the Soul,” and will feature a 26-show run starting August 23. McLellan, who has a history with Aurora and has acted in various TV shows, emphasizes the themes of resilience and redemption in the story of Celie. STORY 3: Police: Man Shot To Death After Argument At Gwinnett County Home
On Wednesday afternoon, a fatal shooting occurred on Josephine Road in unincorporated Gwinnett County near Doraville. Gwinnett County police responded to a 911 call around 3:30 p.m. and found the victim dead from at least one gunshot wound. The shooter fled the scene, and the motive is currently unknown. The victim's name is being withheld until next of kin are notified. STORY 4: Motorcyclist Pleads Guilty In High Speed Chase That Led To Trooper's Death
Gerson Danilo Ayala-Rodriguez, 21, pleaded guilty to first-degree vehicular homicide on Wednesday for the January crash that killed Georgia State Trooper Jimmy Cenescar. Ayala-Rodriguez led Trooper Cenescar on a high-speed chase at speeds up to 140 mph before the trooper lost control of his patrol car, resulting in the fatal crash. In addition to the homicide charge, Ayala-Rodriguez was convicted of multiple misdemeanors including reckless driving and operating an unlicensed vehicle. As part of a plea deal, he will serve 17 years in prison. The case highlighted the dangers of reckless driving and the tragic loss of a young law enforcement officer.
STORY 5: Study: Georgia Gwinnett College's Economic Impact Over $603M
In fiscal year 2023, Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) generated over $603 million in economic impact for Gwinnett County and the Atlanta metro area, marking a 16% increase from the previous year. This brings GGC’s total cumulative economic impact to over $6.4 billion since 2007. The college’s contributions include the creation of 3,769 jobs, with 763 on-campus and 3,006 in the community. GGC also boasts more than 13,000 alumni in the region and graduated a record 900 students in May. The report, commissioned by the University System of Georgia and conducted by the University of Georgia’s Selig Center, highlights GGC’s significant role in regional economic growth and workforce development.

STORY 1: Gwinnett murder suspect arrested in Alabama
A Lawrenceville man, Mario Rene Lopez-Jolon, 38, was arrested in Alabama on murder charges related to the death of Guadalupe Garcia Rodriguez, 40. Rodriguez's body was found in a truck near Alford Elementary School on July 3. Investigators traced Lopez-Jolon to Huntsville, Alabama, where he was arrested and is awaiting extradition. The case may involve a dispute over land in Mexico. Lopez-Jolon faces charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession. Rodriguez's wife had reported him missing on July 1.
STORY 2: More than 51,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Alcovy River On Monday
On Monday, about 51,675 gallons of raw sewage leaked into the Alcovy River from a broken Gwinnett County pipe, spilling for around six hours. The Department of Water Resources stopped the leak by 12:45 p.m. after discovering a cracked pipe. To address the impact, crews cleaned the area, spread lime, and posted warning signs. Residents noticed the river's milky appearance and struggling aquatic life. The spill occurred about 500 feet south of Cedars Road, and a legal notice will be published to inform residents further, as required by the Georgia EPD.
STORY 3: Duluth has a new four-legged cop
The Duluth Police Department has introduced a new K-9 officer, Maverick, a Hanoverian/Plott hound trained in locating missing persons and criminals. Maverick will be paired with Officer John Bustamante, who has completed specialized training to work with him. The addition of Maverick is expected to improve the department's effectiveness in urgent situations and investigations. The team is excited to enhance their service to the city of Duluth.

A new sidewalk has been completed in front of Meadowcreek High School, thanks to funding from the Gateway85 Community Improvement District. This 650-foot, $35,000 sidewalk fills a critical gap on Steve Reynolds Boulevard, improving safety for the 10-20% of students who walk to school and local residents. The project, completed by Curb Tech, began in July and was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Principal Kevin Wood and Gateway85 Executive Director Emory Morsberger praised the partnership, noting the sidewalk not only enhances safety but also beautifies the area.
STORY 5: Fentanyl-related overdoses lead to murder charges
David Shane Lancaster, 45, from Lawrenceville, faces two felony murder charges for allegedly causing the overdose deaths of two men by selling them fentanyl. The overdoses occurred in May 2023 and January 2024. Lancaster was arrested in Atlanta on August 5, 2024, after being tracked by deputies. Along with the murder charges, he faces a drug sale charge related to the 2023 death. During his arrest, authorities found him with methamphetamine, a handgun, and an electronic scale. Lancaster is currently held in Gwinnett County Jail.

STORY 1: Former Gwinnett Teacher Arrested and Charged with 108 Counts of Child Sexual Exploitation
Blake Lawrence Edwards, a 32-year-old former teacher at Gwinnett's Mountain View High School, was arrested in Hall County on Friday for possessing and sharing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Edwards faces 108 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, including charges for publishing and possessing CSAM. Authorities first noted his illegal online activity in March, leading to a search warrant and the seizure of two external hard drives in May. Edwards, who taught at Mountain View for less than a year, resigned shortly after the search. There is no evidence the CSAM was created locally.
STORY 2: Celebrating 30 Years —Kidsignments Returns This Week
Kidsignments, a major child and teen consignment sale, returns to the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds this week, celebrating its 30th anniversary. Gwinnett County police arrested 44-year-old James Collins from Snellville after a viral video showed him hitting a 3-year-old child in a grocery store parking lot. Collins was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree and is held in Gwinnett County Jail. The video, widely shared online, led police to verify the incident through surveillance footage at a Kroger store and arrest Collins at his home. The child, who sustained minor injuries, is under the care of family members, and the Department of Family and Child Services have been notified.

STORY 5: Norcross Grad Dearica Hamby Sues WNBA, Aces over Pregnancy Discrimination
Los Angeles Sparks forward Dearica Hamby has filed a federal lawsuit against her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, and the WNBA, alleging workplace discrimination and retaliation related to her pregnancy. Hamby claims Aces coach Becky Hammon implied the team believed she might get pregnant again and that her pregnancy influenced her trade to the Sparks in January 2023. Hamby also accuses the WNBA of inadequately investigating her complaint and not renewing her marketing contract. The Aces have not commented on the lawsuit, while Hammon denied mistreating Hamby. The WNBA is reviewing the complaint.
STORY 6: Teen Hit By Train While Walking Near Tracks In Duluth
A 15-year-old boy was struck by a train in Duluth on Thursday afternoon and is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. near Main St. and Brock Rd. The train’s operator attempted to stop and sounded the horn, but the boy, who was walking along the tracks, was clipped by the train. The incident was captured on a business's security camera. The boy’s name has not been released due to his minor status.

The suspects, 17-year-old Robert Krause and a 16-year-old female, faced multiple charges including aggravated assault, reckless driving, and theft. The truck was stolen from a driveway in Lawrenceville, and surveillance footage showed the suspects finding the keys. After damaging the football field at Mill Creek High School, they were tracked by police and nearly hit an officer while fleeing. STORY 1: National Guardsman From Lawrenceville-based Unit Killed in Iraq
Spc. Travis Jordan Pameni from Douglasville, a member of the Gwinnett-based 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, was one of two Georgians killed in Iraq last week. Along with Spc. Owen James Elliott from Twin City, who was with the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, Pameni died in non-combat incidents in Baghdad on July 31. Both soldiers were on separate missions under U.S. Central Command. The circumstances of their deaths are under investigation. Pameni's remains were returned to the U.S. on Sunday, and his wife, Nasiah, paid tribute to him on Facebook, mourning their planned anniversary.
STORY 2: Gwinnett Students Return To Class for The 2024-2025 School Year
On the first day of the 2024-2025 school year at Hull Middle School, sixth-grade language arts teacher Allison Howard quickly engaged her new students with assignments. Over 182,000 Gwinnett County Public Schools students began classes, with the district's preparation including staffing and facility readiness. Despite starting the year with some vacancies, most schools, including Hull Middle, were fully staffed. Principal Denise Showell highlighted the importance of a strong start and praised the school’s high teacher retention. STORY 3: Gwinnett Mail Carrier Accused of Stealing Mail and Using Drugs On Duty
Gwinnett County police have arrested USPS carrier Marcus Gregory on multiple charges, including DUI drugs, possession of narcotics, and theft of mail. On July 31, following USPS complaints about missing mail, undercover officers observed Gregory dumping mail in the woods near Dacula and using illegal drugs. Gregory was arrested after being pulled over, and officers found additional drugs and a firearm in his vehicle. A search of his personal vehicle and home uncovered 215 pieces of stolen mail. The investigation was a collaboration between Gwinnett County Police and the USPS Inspector General’s Office.

STORY 4: WANTED: Suspects in Credit Card Skimming Scam at Norcross Grocery Store
Gwinnett Police are seeking two men who used a credit card skimmer to steal financial information at Talpas grocery store in Norcross on June 20. The suspects distracted the cashier while placing the skimmer on the card reader. The store manager discovered the skimmer after customers reported issues with their cards. Surveillance footage shows the men arriving from Green Hill Drive and leaving east on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. STORY 5: Stone Mountain Man Gets Life Sentence For Killing Girlfriend
Kevin Lamar Matchen, 51, was sentenced to life plus 15 years for fatally shooting his girlfriend, Alysia Darice Scott, in October 2023. Scott was found dead on her sofa, shot in the head, while her grandchild was asleep upstairs. Matchen, who was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, and other charges, initially claimed he found Scott dead after returning from a late-night trip. However, evidence contradicted his story, showing that he had been with Scott's phone and captured on traffic cameras. Matchen was found guilty after a brief jury deliberation.

STORY 4: Chick-fil-A delivery driver fights off would-be robber
On July 1, Tommie Lee Williams, 51, allegedly broke into a south Gwinnett Chick-fil-A and attempted to rob it while armed with a gun. The delivery driver, despite being threatened, fought back, leading to a struggle captured on surveillance. Williams eventually fled but was identified through a vehicle linked to him. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including armed robbery and aggravated assault. Williams was arrested on Wednesday with the assistance of Gwinnett sheriff's deputies and U.S. Marshals.
STORY 5: Georgia man- Ghana native get prison terms in crime spree
Georgia man Kujo Duako, 35, from Ghana, and Sammetrius Brooks, 33, of Atlanta, were sentenced for a string of armed robberies in the Atlanta area. Duako received 16 years in prison, and Brooks was sentenced to 11 years and nine months. Their crime spree in October 2018 included a failed CVS robbery and multiple successful robberies at various businesses. Law enforcement recovered over $9,000 in cash and stolen phones from Duako. The case, part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, involved coordination among the FBI and local police agencies to address violent crime.
