  • Primerica Employees Collect More Than 36,000 Food Items For The Salvation Army

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, December 4th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Primerica Employees Collect More Than 36,000 Food Items For The Salvation Army

Primerica employees, led by the PULSO group, exceeded their goal by collecting over 4,459 food items for the annual Salvation Army Can-A-Thon food drive at the company's Duluth headquarters. The Can-A-Thon is a significant contributor to the Salvation Army's metro Atlanta efforts, with Primerica historically playing a crucial role. Despite a slight decrease in donations compared to last year, Primerica's contributions remain substantial, aiding over 32,000 canned and dry food items. The initiative addressing economic struggles and inflation's impact on the community, reflects Primerica's commitment to community service. Financial donations, collected through a QR code, further support the cause.

  • Over a third of young adults had anxiety or depression during pandemic

GDP Script/ Top Stories for Dec 3rd

    Publish Date:  Dec 1st

    HENSSLER 15

From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast.

Today is Sunday, December 3rd and Happy heavenly Birthday to musician Andy Williams.

    ***12.03.23 - BIRTHDAY - ANDY WILLIAMS***

I’m Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Peggy Slappy Properties.

    1. Over a third of young adults had anxiety or depression during pandemic
    2. Study says vegan diet can help rapidly improve heart health
    3. Mark Stoops says Kentucky fought the wrong battle in the SEC scheduling war
    4. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe!

      Break 1: Peggy Slappy

STORY 1: Over a third of young adults had anxiety or depression during pandemic

A study by Northwestern University found that people aged over 40 experienced lower levels of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic than their younger counterparts. Over one-third of young adults were highly stressed during the pandemic, with anxiety and depression rates significantly higher among those aged 18 to 39 compared to those over 40. The study revealed that 40 percent of young adults had anxiety, and 33 percent had depression, compared to 31 percent and 24 percent, respectively, for those over 40. Economic precarity and responses to social upheaval were identified as factors contributing to young adults' worse mental well-being.

STORY 2: Vegan diet can help rapidly improve heart health: study

A study by Stanford University found that adopting a vegan diet for eight weeks significantly improved heart health, with the most substantial changes occurring in the first four weeks. The research focused on identical twins to eliminate genetic and upbringing variables. Participants on the vegan diet showed lower cholesterol levels, insulin, and body weight compared to omnivores. Vegan participants experienced a 20 percent drop in fasting insulin, reducing diabetes risk, and lost an average of 4.2 pounds more than omnivores. The study emphasized that incorporating more plant-based foods into one's diet could offer health benefits, even if not adopting a strictly vegan lifestyle.

STORY 3: Mark Story: In the SEC football scheduling war, has Kentucky fought the wrong battle?

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship game between No. 1 Georgia and No. 8 Alabama will mark the end of an era, as the SEC is scrapping divisions, coinciding with the arrival of Oklahoma and Texas in 2024-25. The new format will feature the top two teams in the league's 16-team standings. Stoops argues that preserving the divisional split would have been more beneficial for Kentucky's football future. The SEC's current division era, in place since 1992, has provided meaningful annual rivalries, competitive balance, and geographic proximity. The article suggests that the focus on creating more diversity in scheduling within the league may not be worth sacrificing the advantages of the divisional format.

STORY 4: Could immigrants be America's new swing voter group?

A nationwide survey conducted by The Times in partnership with KFF reveals a degree of ambivalence among immigrants, a group considered part of the Democratic base. While many lean Democratic, a significant number are not strongly attached to either major party. The survey, conducted among more than 3,300 immigrants, reflects the diversity of political views within this demographic. Overwhelming majorities indicated that their financial situation improved after moving to the U.S., challenging the conventional wisdom surrounding immigrants' partisan allegiance. The findings highlight a potential swing group among immigrants, showcasing their varied political perspectives and a willingness to consider alternatives.

STORY 5: Christmas at Biltmore remains a beloved holiday tradition

Biltmore House, the 250-room mansion built by George Vanderbilt, continues its long-standing Christmas tradition, inviting guests to experience the holiday enchantment with twinkling lights, ornaments, and hand-decorated Christmas trees. The estate, set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offers the Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration from Nov. 3 to Jan. 7, allowing visitors to tour the house, gardens, conservatory, winery, and Antler Hill Village. The Candlelight Christmas Evenings, running from Nov. 3 to Jan. 6, provides an Old World charm with thousands of lights, a 55-foot Norway spruce tree, and luminaries lining the walkways. The estate also features the Italian Renaissance Alive exhibition until Jan. 7, and special stay packages at the Inn on Biltmore Estate and Village Hotel.

We’ll be back in a moment

      Break 3:  JACKSON - INGLES 9 – ESOG

STORY 6: Beverage Lab exhibit debuts at World of Coke

The World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta introduces a new and immersive experience, the Beverage Lab, making it an even more compelling destination for the holiday season. The interactive exhibit allows visitors to actively participate in exploring the science, creativity, and innovation behind Coca-Cola's diverse lineup of drinks. The Beverage Lab features sections like "Look Inside," demystifying flavor creation and carbonation science; "Taste the Past," where visitors can sample classic drinks from Coca-Cola's vault, including New Coke; and "Shape the Future," where opinions on potential soft-drink formulas can be shared. Admission to Beverage Lab is included with general admission to the museum, offering various attractions.

STORY 7: State Senate study committee recommends repealing CON law

The Senate Study Committee on Certificate of Need (CON) Reform in Georgia has recommended repealing the state law governing hospital construction and medical services, concluding that the decades-old CON law hampers advances in health-care delivery, especially in rural areas. Georgia's CON law, in place since 1979, requires applicants for new medical facilities or health-care services to demonstrate the need to the state Department of Community Health. The committee's recommendation includes repealing the CON law or introducing reform measures that exempt certain healthcare services and facilities from the CON process, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery in the state.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.

STORY 1: Mountain View High alum — whose family immigrated from Ghana —becomes first-generation college graduate

Diana Bamfo, a Ghanaian immigrant, has overcome challenges to graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC). Bamfo's family moved to the U.S. when she was 12, and she worked as a grocery store cashier for a year to save money for college. Fascinated by math, she chose accounting and joined GGC in 2017. Active in campus groups like International Student Admissions and the School of Business Torch Team Ambassadors Program, she credits GGC for providing a supportive environment and plans to pursue a master's degree in accounting after gaining work experience.

STORY 2: GCPS Parent Mentors to host presentation to help parents support special education students

Gwinnett County Public Schools Parent Mentors are hosting a presentation titled "Behavior Strategies to Support Your Child" for parents of students receiving special education services. The session, scheduled for December 5, will cover identifying problematic behaviors, understanding the four primary functions of behavior, and offering tips and techniques for addressing behaviors. Parents can choose between an in-person session at the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center in Suwanee or a virtual session on Zoom. The goal is to provide consistent behavior interventions and strategies across home and school environments. Parents can register for their preferred session online.

STORY 4: My students in prison have complex pasts but are now creating new stories

The Northwestern University Prison Education Program recently celebrated the graduation of 16 incarcerated students with bachelor's degrees. The program aims to provide higher education opportunities to those in prison, fostering growth, healing, and rehabilitation. The students, who shared their complex life stories through assignments like sociological autobiographies, demonstrate the diverse backgrounds and challenges faced by individuals in the criminal justice system. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexity of individuals behind bars, acknowledging their humanity, dreams, and potential for positive change. The incarcerated students participated in a full liberal arts curriculum, highlighting their academic capabilities and resilience.

STORY 5: This lawsuit has the NCAA staring down extinction. Is that a bad thing?

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is facing a potential class-action lawsuit from current and former athletes seeking $1.4 billion in damages for violating antitrust laws by restricting compensation for the use of athletes' "names, images, and likenesses" (NIL). The NCAA argues that such damages could force the curtailing of college sports programs across the country and has appealed the case. This legal battle comes amid a broader shift in policies surrounding college athletes' compensation, with increased focus on the athletes' earning rights, particularly in the context of NIL endorsements. The NCAA's longstanding amateurism model is under scrutiny as the landscape of college sports evolves.

STORY 7: 30-year mortgage rates keep falling, move below 7.5%

The average rate on 30-year fixed mortgages decreased to 7.41%, down from 7.55% the previous week, according to Bankrate's weekly national survey. This drop may signal a prolonged decline in mortgage rates, influenced by factors such as a slowing job market and signs that the Federal Reserve's efforts to combat inflation are effective. Mortgage rates are also impacted by factors like decreased mortgage applications and lenders vying for a shrinking pool of applicants. The Federal Reserve's decision to pause interest rate hikes contributes to the shift in mortgage rates. Economists anticipate a further decrease in mortgage rates, potentially falling below 7% during the winter months.

STORY 8: Gov. Brian Kemp's chief of staff moving to Georgia Power

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's chief of staff, Trey Kilpatrick, is set to join Georgia Power as senior vice president of external affairs from January 15. Kilpatrick, who served as chief of staff since 2020, has experience working with the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and an Atlanta-based investment firm. Georgia Power's CEO, Kim Greene, expressed Kilpatrick's dedication to Georgia's growth and well-being. Lauren Curry, Kemp's deputy chief of staff, will succeed Kilpatrick as chief of staff, marking the first female in this role in Georgia's history, while Brad Bohannon will become the deputy chief of staff.

A new study suggests that just 20 minutes of exercise can enhance brain function after a poor night's sleep. Mental performance improves with moderate exercise, regardless of sleep quality or oxygen levels. Chronic sleep deprivation affects nearly 40% of the population and is linked to various health issues. The research explored how sleep, oxygen, and exercise impact cognitive performance. Findings indicated that even in low-oxygen conditions or after sleep deprivation, a short cycling session improved cognitive tasks. This improvement might be due to various factors such as changes in brain-regulating hormones and psychophysiological aspects like cerebral blood flow, arousal, and motivation. The study challenges the notion that cognitive performance relies solely on specific brain areas, suggesting a more complex interaction across different brain regions.

STORY 1: Gwinnett Jail Dogs Supporters Launch Petition To Save Program

The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office has suspended its Jail Dogs program due to the expansion of its mental health unit in the county jail, sparking public outcry. The Jail Dogs program, active for 13 years, pairs inmates with dogs for therapeutic rehabilitation. The program, ending on December 15, has drawn support from the community, leading to the launch of a petition on Change.org titled "Save the Gwinnett Jail Dog Program." The petition, with a goal of 1,000 signatures, emphasizes the program's value in teaching inmates valuable skills, fostering life-changing lessons, and helping overcrowded shelters. The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office has not ruled out the possibility of the program's return in the future.

STORY 2: Health and Wellness Resource Fair to be held in Snellville

The Georgia Advocacy Office is hosting a Health and Wellness Resource Fair for people with disabilities and older adults at the Gwinnett County Public Library Centerville Branch in Snellville on November 29. The free event, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will provide health screenings, community benefits navigation, seasonal vaccines, and resources for essential services. Bernard Moore, Community Outreach and Civic Engagement Disability Advocate for the Georgia Advocacy Office, emphasized the importance of connecting communities with life-enriching services. The federally-mandated Georgia Advocacy Office will continue hosting resource events throughout Georgia until April, supported by the Administration for Community Living through USAging.

STORY 3: Three Students Overdoses At Berkmar High School Prompt Increased Drug Prevention Efforts in Gwinnett Schools

Gwinnett County Public Schools is grappling with students experiencing fentanyl-related overdoses at Berkmar High School, with three incidents reported this semester. None resulted in fatalities as Narcan was administered in each case. This issue is a manifestation of the nationwide opioid crisis, with teens unknowingly consuming substances containing fentanyl. The district is working with health professionals, community partners, and the criminal justice system to address the problem. Efforts include Narcan training for staff, substance abuse awareness presentations, and community engagement to raise awareness and prevent drug-related issues in schools. Vaping, particularly THC-laced products, is also a concern.

Chick-fil-A is seeking approval from Gwinnett County officials to build a new restaurant at the intersection of State Route 124 and Zoar Church Road in southern Gwinnett County. The company has submitted a commercial rezoning application for a 5,400-square-foot restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a two-lane drive-thru, and 71 parking spaces. The proposed location is adjacent to Redeemer Church, and if approved, the church plans to subdivide its property. The Chick-fil-A will be positioned near existing establishments, including Wendy's, Waffle House, Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, and more. The rezoning requires approval from Gwinnett County's Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners.

U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock has announced plans to introduce legislation in Congress for the creation of Georgia's first national park, following a tour of the Ocmulgee Mounds in Macon, a prehistoric Native American site. The Ocmulgee Mounds, established as a national historical park in the 1930s, holds significant cultural and historical value. The National Park Service recently sent a study to Congress supporting the protection of the Muscogee Creek Nation's historic homeland in Middle Georgia. Warnock, along with other lawmakers, is collaborating on legislation to designate the Ocmulgee Mounds as a national park.

          5. Infants found to have signs of self-awareness: study

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, November 27th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Infants found to have signs of self-awareness: study

A new study from the University of Birmingham reveals that babies as young as four months old display signs of self-awareness. The research involved showing infants a ball on a screen moving towards or away from them while simulating touch with small vibrations on their hands. Enhanced brain activity was observed in four-month-olds when touch was preceded by an object moving towards them. The findings suggest that even before learning to reach for objects, babies exhibit a wired multisensory brain, understanding the interaction between their bodies and surrounding space. The study also explores how unexpected touches affect older babies, indicating a developing awareness of body-space relationships. Researchers aim to expand their study to include newborns, potentially uncovering the origins of human consciousness. The full research is published in Scientific Reports.

              STORY 1: Jimmy Carter Library

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library launched a new exhibition, "Holidays at the Carter White House," unveiling never-before-seen artifacts. Among the highlights are the 1979 Hanukkah menorah (used in the first presidential Celebration of the Festival of Lights), a 500-year-old nativity painting, Christmas stockings, and various exclusive items. The exhibit features a Victorian-style Christmas tree mirroring the one at the Carter White House. Moreover, a grand 15-foot tree showcases a menorah, alongside a Kwanzaa communal cup and candles, symbolizing diverse holiday traditions. This captivating exhibition not only displays historical artifacts but also represents the inclusive spirit of holiday celebrations observed at the Carter White House, offering a unique glimpse into presidential festivities and cultural diversity.

              STORY 3: Traffic

During Thanksgiving weekend, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will temporarily halt lane closures on major roads and interstates near shopping areas to ease holiday traffic. Effective from Sunday at 10 pm, Nov. 26, this proactive step aims to improve traffic flow. Similar restrictions will apply during Christmas and New Year's holidays. While construction-related closures will pause, caution is advised near work zones, as some long-term closures might persist for safety. Incident-related lane closures could occur at any time. Drivers should stay updated via 511ga.org, follow road signs, and be cautious around work zones. Heavy traffic is expected near Mall of Georgia on Nov. 26 from 2 to 7 p.m., so drivers are urged to stay alert, buckle up, plan ahead, and obey Move-Over laws for emergency vehicles' safety.

Holiday travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, beware of challenges this season. Parking shortages, hour-long security lines, and construction disruptions await. To navigate smoothly, arrive 3 hours early during peak times, expect parking hurdles due to ongoing construction, and prep for long bag lines. Security delays may occur due to lane closures and upgrades. Opt for alternative parking like MARTA or reservations at off-airport lots for a stress-free experience. Pack snacks, as concession lines might be lengthy. Stay updated on security wait times for a hassle-free journey at the world's busiest airport.
